What had started with Mami stress-baking far too much cake and offering to give some away, had lead to a number of other offers to bring food, and soon she had ended up in charge of a substantial potluck mingle. Well, she supposed it would make for a nice welcome party for everyone else who had been dragged into this strange new world with her!

And so, a number of small tables and picnic blankets had been set out with cakes, cookies, hot dogs, burgers and other sweet and savoury treats that her and others had been brought along. Mami had even taken the time to decorate the table with little flowers that she'd gathered as well, just to add to the atmosphere that the cherry blossom trees already provided.

Hopefully it would be a relaxing, pleasant afternoon.

[zagreus has never seen a variety of food like this before, so he's fascinated by the different things he can try. however, it's obvious he doesn't know how to eat certain things, so you may witness him attempting to eat noodles with his hands, or eating an entire apple, core and all, or sticking his finger into the egg salad.

wherever he walks, his footprints leave behind black marks where the flames on his feet have burned into the grass. so, he's not exactly difficult to find.]

Mmm, that's really good. Bit messy, though.

[He definitely will not laugh at this poor fellow attempting to eat noodles with his hands. Well... okay, he will try not to laugh.]

Would you like something to eat those with? I am sure they have spoons or chop sticks as an option, depending upon your preference? It might make eating less messy.

Oh, good thinking.

[that definitely makes more sense than what he was doing]

... that's how you eat these things normally, isn't it?

[He nods. He's definitely not judging.]

It's perfectly reasonable that not everyone is the best acquainted with these things. I'd never used chopsticks before until I started traveling with my friends, for example. I hope I wasn't being too presumptuous in suggesting you try using utensils you might not be familiar with.

[Definitely no judgement either way. He's mostly just amused.]

I'm Zagreus. I just got so excited seeing all this food, I sort of forgot you don't always eat things with your hands.

Nice to meet you, Alphinaud. What's a chop stick?

It's a bit like... well, you know how some foods you can put them on a stick? sort of like that but instead you use two smaller ones to pick up food; not stab them with it, but trap food between them and pick them up.

[He really hopes he's describing it in a way that makes sense...]

Oh. Sounds tricky... do mortals eat like that often?

[sagescion]

Not always! It somewhat depends upon where they live. Where I'm from, this group of people from a country called Doma use chopsticks.

[hellward]

I'm getting the impression there's a lot about living up here that I've got absolutely no clue about.

[chuckles]

[Thanatos, to contrast, is not touching either the ground or the food, and just kind of... trying not to make a horrified face at Zagreus as he just goes for it.]

.... Mortals usually have utensils for that kind of food.

[He knows, he's seen a lot of deaths at their hands. He's seen a lot of deaths in general, some less dignified than others.]

[smiles up at him. with a piece of rice on his cheek, probably]

Have you tried any yet? It's really good.

Take care not to choke, would you? I am not skilled in preventing death.

Speaking of which, have you been able to do any work here?

Not yet, although I cannot access Tartarus at this time, so the most I could possibly do is try to gather all of the souls in some place, which almost seems like a worse idea than letting them spread out until they can reach the underworld.

[Keeping a lot of dead guys in one spot has GOTTA have bad effects on the mortal plane, right? He's never tried it, but also he would prefer not to.]

Lord Hades is certain to have my hide after this...

It's not exactly your fault you were summoned by--whoever those people are, the power holders. Weren't you held on the surface before, with Sisyphus? That wasn't your fault, either, right? Not like Father's known for being reasonable about these things. But still.

[glumchum]

[He dOES NOT WANT TO TALK ABOUT THAT. So embarrassing... And so much work to make up after. When you get kidnapped and don't even get a day off after!!!

He sighs.]

It is... Ah. Don't worry about it, Zag. It'll be my work to deal with when I get back.

At least this time I wasn't tricked into it.

[ Sir. Sir please not the finger in the egg salad. ]

Oh- would you like some help with that?

[at least it was just the one finger?]

I'mmmm guessing I've made some sort of hospitality mistake, haven't I?

Nothing particularly bad, but I promise your meal will be enjoyable, and a bit less messy, if you used this.

[ Offering him a fork. ]

Thanks. I don't eat meals like this all that often, usually just pomegranates or gyros. I forget you mortals do this every day, huh? Or night.

[ Mortals, huh? While it doesn't necessarily bother Thoma being addressed as such, it does make him a bit curious. ]

Sometimes three times a day, if we're lucky enough to not be too busy.

I assume there's some sort of occasion or something. Feasts like this can't be an everyday thing.

I'm new to the area, so I couldn't say for sure but... where I'm from, feasts are more of a special occasion sort of thing.

Ummm... I don't think that's how you...

[ Strangely enough, Sigma finds himself relating to Zagreus just a little bit as he watches him swallow an apple core without hesitation. ...Not because he's ever done something like that, of course!! It's just- seeing someone who obviously doesn't know what they're supposed to be doing with something so seemingly obvious to most, is... well. ]

...Nevermind. [ It's a bit late to stop him now, though. ] I'm, uh, glad you enjoyed it.

It's good except for the middle bit with the stem and the seeds.

So I'll probably avoid that part next time.
