Attack on Holidays

Sometime after a less than stellar conference call, Reiner sends an invitation to everyone from his world. "You're Invited to a Holiday Party," the store-bought invitation reads in swirling seasonally decorated letters. How very fancy!

The invitation specifies three things. Number one: it is a celebration of the holidays. Number two: it is a celebration of a year of a successful non-aggression pact. Number three: everyone is invited to bring a "plus one."

Surely, nothing will go wrong with this plan. Surely!

The party itself takes place at an inn in Stormreach, part of which has been reserved by Reiner. The inn is made of stone and wood, its aesthetic closely resembling buildings in Paradis. There are several spacious rooms available: places for eating, places for mingling, cozy corners for more private conversations, and access to the inn's bar.

In one of those cozy spaces, one might find a lit candle known as a Candle of True Feelings. In its presence, people understand their feelings better and feel inspired to talk about them. How very curious!
Of note: magic supersedes technology in Stormreach. One is far more likely to run across potions and crystals than gaming systems… But that hasn't stopped Reiner from setting up a gaming system in a corner, anyway.
If one steps outside for a breath of (cold) fresh air, they'll find themselves close to the clock tower. Local legend claims that those who kiss on top of it are destined to never breakup. However, that legend has not been tested … yet.
During the party, a table is filled with various gifts for the "+1s," created by those from Paradis and Marley. The gifts include knitted clothing (scarves, mittens, socks), chocolates, sweet baked goods, and fidget toys made of wood or stone. Feel free to partake, +1s!

Naturally, there is a wide assortment of food—some of which is best described as "ungodly spicy"—with a particular focus on potato-based foods. Also, peaches and pineapples, for Reasons™.

Yeah! I think we've been friends for a while. I met her when she first arrived and taught her about convenience stores!

Convenient stores are pretty nice, not going to lie. Like we have them in the City but I still appreciate them.

I'd be kinda scared of what one would be like in the City...

Because the vending machines sell things like canned memories of someone dying?

...Yeah, they do sell that kind of stuff. But they also sell, like. Regular snacks.

Ehhhhhh?! Why would somebody even want to buy that?

You're not going to like any answer I give to that question so I think I just won't answer actually.

Why is your world so scary what the heck, Neechan.

I genuinely don't know. It's just like that.

[Rinku squeezes Evangeline's hand in both of hers. She takes a little breath.]

I know you've. Kinda solved the problem now. [Is she -- no, she's not gonna address the Frost Giant in the room, not really, she can't. Maybe not ever.] And I know I can't do research like you guys do, or teleport once everyone who can cross worlds gets that power back again, like Fajra-chan or someone. But I still wanna do whatever I can so someday you don't ever have to be scared of that place again.

I'm okay now. But there's still a lot of people from bad worlds besides mine, and they might have to go back to their worlds someday... So I hope we figure something out that works for everyone.

[Not everyone can make a deal with a fae god.]

Yeah... And there's still a lot of people in danger back there too, right? I wish I could help everyone. Everyone everyone! Even if I can't the way things are right now.

You're very helpful in Ellipsa, though. Even if you can't do research, you're great at protecting people from monsters.

[Rinku looks over at Evangeline. It almost looks like she's about to cry for a second, but she shakes her head and smiles.]

Thanks, Neechan. I'm gonna keep working hard! I want to help everyone, and I want to make you proud!

[Part of her says it doesn't matter, but that's a small bit, if vocal. And every time her hero, her big sister, the one she isn't good enough to keep no, that's wrong, it's okay, don't feel bad about it praises her, it shrinks down again.]

I'm proud of you already.

[Unaware of Rinku's internal turmoil, Evangeline reaches over to give Rinku's head scritches, the same as always.]

[Rinku sniffs. She smiles and nudges into the head scritches, moving her head a little so the tiara pinned on top isn't in the way.]

You're the best. Do you wanna check out what all they have here? Reiner-san gave out these fidget toy things, they're fun, and the food's really good...

[She looks over briefly to her Pokémon sitting on top of a table, with Mecchan reading a picture book to Hina.]

Oh, sure! I saw the video games already, what else is there?

[Time to start walking around to check out the remaining party activities.]

Yeah, the games are fun! Hmm... Let's see what all else!

[Fun distraction, fun distraction! Rinku grabs Evangeline's hand and walks with her, picking up a piece of stollen from the dessert table and eating it as they wander the inn's open spaces.]

They rented a bunch of rooms, huh? Reiner-san worked so hard.

[Off they go! Evangeline hums cheerfully.]

He really did. They deserve to have as fun a time as possible, in my opinion.

Yeah! They all seem really sad... Their world scares me a lot, but I wanna make sure they're happy.

[She peers into a room and blinks, then tugs Evangeline along.]

There's a candle! Maybe this is a break room for if you're tired of the party?

Makes sense. Maybe it's one of those scented candles that are supposed to be relaxing?

[Sniff, sniff.]

I don't think so, but it feels nice.

[Rinku takes another bite of her sugared fruit bread. She takes in the candle's aura, and before she can stop herself, she speaks.]

You're always so nice to me. To everyone. You work so hard and say all these things and I can't not believe that you care, I know you do, even when it's scary. So I know it's not really that we're not good enough or you don't like us or Ellipsa anymore, that you probably just didn't have a choice somehow, but --

[She turns pale and tries to stop herself.]

Rinku???

[Sorry, excuse her, where the fuck did this come from.]

Of course I love you and Ellipsa, what are you talking about?

I'm sorry!

[Rinku strains not to talk, but all she can do is shake her head and let the words spill out.]

You told me you were going to ask Davis-san for a way to stay here forever and bring your parents, just like everyone's been trying for, like Fajra-san said she promised you and the Research Centre's been working on. Because he's gotta be able to do it if everyone else can't do it yet, right? I thought. But then you said later you actually wished to go someplace else instead, one of the worlds he's from or works in or I guess owns. I thought you didn't wanna be here anymore.

[She gulps, and the candle spurs her on.]

But I didn't wanna tell you because I knew that couldn't be right, you've put so much work into it and everyone else has too, and you're so full of love and you've been so happy, and why should I be upset anyway when you finally get what you wanted? You and your parents deserve to be safe and happy, and everyone else who tried to get you all here to stay hasn't made any progress, and you're always trying to think of the sure option instead of one that might not come true, so it makes a lot of sense and I don't have the right to feel bad, I'm just someone who wanted to keep every place I've ever called home even if it's selfish so I know I can't understand!

[Tears fill Rinku's eyes, and she squeezes Evangeline's hand, looking in shock at what she's just said.]

So I've been trying not to think about it. [sniff] So you can be happy while you're still here.

Rinku-

[Okay, first things first, she lets go of Rinku's hand so she can hug her tightly.]

I'm sorry. I had no idea this was upsetting you so much.

I did ask Max to bring my parents here and keep me here, and he couldn't do it. Even Max has limitations. And I do want to stay here with you, and with my friends - but it'd be selfish of me to prioritize my own happiness over making sure my parents were okay.

But I promise, it's not because I don't love you, or because I don't want to be with you anymore. I love you so much that the thought of losing you really hurts, so I try not to think about that, either. I'm sorry I made you worry.

[Rinku sniffs. She stands there for a moment, until she can will her body out of the shock, and then she clings back onto Evangeline. At least she's eaten the stollen now so she doesn't have to awkwardly maneuver around it. She shudders and starts to cry, hugging tightly.]

I'm sorry... I didn't wanna say. [hic] I knew it'd hurt.

[Hurt Evangeline. Hurt herself. Hurt everyone whose years of work won't even save her anymore. Just hurt.]
