[SOLARPEAK] (SUMMER GUILD) TRAINING
[In the Summer guild, Edmond has been spending some time adjusting to some new abilities gained from home alongside the emergence of some additional memories. He approaches someone else politely, waiting until a natural break in what they’re doing before speaking up.]
I’m trying to test something. Would you be opposed to taking a few shots at me?
[It’s an odd thing to ask, perhaps, but he does have a good reason!]
no subject
[They meet again! Hijikata has just finished a round of sparring with his Emboar, and he and the pokémon are both taking a break and drinking some water. He immediately looks ready to have a go at Edmond, though!]
Sure thing. What do you need me from me? Fire? Or something else?
no subject
[Ah, it's him.
Edmond looks momentarily flustered, but then he nods in half acknowledgement and half agreement.]
Whatever you think is best. I'll make ready, don't hold back.
no subject
[He starts off with a salve of fireballs, but if Edmond has an easy time with those, he'll add a handful of fire swords coming down at him from above!]
no subject
Inside it, Edmond watches Hijikata with a calm, steadfast expression.]
Good. Something bigger.
no subject
Incoming!
[He brings down his flame swords to stab through the shield, combining the fire's heat with the sharpness of blades. If they can't get through the shiny bubble either, he'll try a lava missile next!]
no subject
[It's an entirely different magic to that available in Ellipsa and one that Edmond has only recently come to master in any respect, and as the swords slam down against the shimmering light the ripples at the points of contact split out into shining cracks.
Edmond grunts softly, gritting his teeth.]
It's fine-- Just try not to set me alight.
no subject
[The fiery swords change colour, going from orange to green. Noticing those cracks, Hijikata manipulates the weapons to try difference approaches at once - continued stabs, wide slashes, fast flurries of cuts.]
Can you repair it in real time? Or does it just have a finite amount of HP-- I mean, damage it can take?
no subject
[That is, in fact, what they are doing right now. Edmond pours his essence out into the shield and the hairline cracks that appear at each point of impact seal closed.
Essence is not an infinite resource, however, and it's not too long before he has to hold one hand up.]
All right-- stop.
[And the shield drops the moment the attacks cease, Edmond dropping to one knee as he gasps for breath.]
no subject
manaEssence pool does. At the signal, he dismisses his elemental swords and steps up to offer a hand to help Edmond up (he has some baseline manners)!]That was a good start!
[One thing he needs confirmation of, though...]
This isn't one of our summer powers, is it?
no subject
No, it is not.
[The young man can still feel the effort buzzing through his body.]
It's an ability from home. One of several that I possess.
no subject
[He sort of assumed that Edmond would be in something like a law enforcement position on his homeworld too - in his experience, it's that type that gravitates towards joining the force of whichever other realm they end up in (case in point) -, and that may still hold true, in which case he envies him a little... but then again it stands to reason that the criminals of his homeworld have access to magic too, so it all evens out!]
no subject
[And that kind of title, given Hijikata's experience of Edmond so far, likely would not come as any kind of a surprise. 'Law enforcement' is a wide net to cast but the man is not far wrong with that assumption.]
Though my abilities have little to do with my position.
no subject
[They really should hang out more!! But, well, they're hanging out right now.]
So does everyone in your world have magic? Or are some people born with it and others aren't?
no subject
[Edmond has always been kind of awkward when it comes to making friends, though Hijikata has probably already realised that...]
No, not everyone. It has to do with how well we can manipulate a natural abundance of essence within our bodies. I happen to have a high level of it - more so than most.
no subject
[It's rare that Hijikata is the person who comes on more strongly - among his peers back home he's comparatively more reserved (which doesn't say much at all, really) -, but in a way, he almost enjoys it. Edmond may come across as a little aloof, but he's friendly enough to be worth talking to!
Hinobuta, who moves in to greet the Vice-Captain now that the humans' training session is over, seems to think so too. Since Edmond last saw the pokémon, it evolved from a child-sized Pignite into an Emboar a little taller (and much broader) than either man.]
Oh, right - Hinobuta grew up! It happened so fast, I still remember how small he was when I got him...
[He says that as if it wasn't his insane training regimen that instilled the ambition to evolve fast in the pokémon!]
no subject
['Lucky' is not what he would have called it, all things considered. Edmond spent so much of his life fighting his natural gift and dealing with the consequences of ignoring the steady buildup of essence in his body, trying to prove himself via deeds and physical prowess over magic...
He's shaken from those thoughts, thankfully enough, by the change in topic. How he had failed to notice Hinobuta before now is anyone's guess but he appears to find the creature's appearance suddenly startling as he looks it up and down.]
'Grew up' seems something of an understatement in this case.
no subject
Right? He grew bigger than an average Emboar!
[He seems really proud of that.]
Maybe we can all train together? Do you have any other techniques from home besides the shield that you want to practise?
[If so, he wants to see those! He's blithely unaware of how quickly Edmond can even recover his Essence and whether his reserves mightn't be wiped out for a good while.]
no subject
[Another technique? Well, he does have one other thing, but...
Edmond shakes his head.]
Another ability I have been developing is healing, but that would require you to be injured first.
no subject
[He could use more healer friends, frankly. There's barely anyone he can call on when he gets himself wrecked! Somehow, he barely knows a handful of spring power holders, and not all of them are actually good at healing.
Hinobuta lets out a squeal and rubs its abdomen, apparently not on board with Hijikata's suggestion to prolong the training session.]
Oh? Are you hungry, Hinobuta? Then I reckon it's time for a proper break. Edmond, thanks for letting me test my attacks against your shield!
[Look at him demonstrating good manners once again... maybe this, too, is something that Edmond brings out in his. It seems to be a toss-up between that and his latent S tendencies. What gives?]
no subject
Oh-- mm, sure.
[Funny how he thought it had been the other way around, but he's not going to argue that. Nor is he going to sniff at the other man's good manners.]
I should take a break myself. I shouldn't push myself too hard with this.
no subject
[Come along, Edmond, and witness just how much mayonnaise this man can devour in one sitting!]
no subject
[He hadn't been-... but maybe he had? Edmond is someone used to a solitary life, but even so... part of him does still reach out for friendships, even if he's awkward at trying to connect with others.
After that moment of hesitation he smiles and nods.]
Yes. Yes, I'd like that very much. What kind of food do they sell?
no subject
[Normally, Japanese (or equivalent) food is his go-to, but on Avalon, it was hard to come by, and he got used to the local cuisine. Now, it has become a comfort food of its own to him.]
If you don't know what to pick, go with the standard! I'll get that too.
[And once he's received his portion, of course he'll drown it in mayonnaise. Hinobuta, meanwhile, snort fire at its own to char it... they really are two peas in a pod with their strange tastes.]
no subject
[Not the kind of thing that Edmond would usually find himself eating, being a member of a noble house who - while not seeing themselves as better than anyone else - would probably not venture towards that kind of cuisine normally.
Still, he finds himself curious anyway, and he goes along with the recommendation of his companion. Soon enough there's a portion of battered, fried fish and some chips in front of him, smelling more strongly of vinegar than he had expected, but what really holds his attention is what Hijikata is drowning his own food with...
He doesn't realise he's staring, not really sure of what comment to make that would not seem entirely rude.]
