But I assure you this is all my own strength.
Anything else would be cheating.
[Said very, very, very pointedly. Because like, they aren't currently existing in a bubble, Duval!!
People can hear!!
That said, though, Purple still understands that they're going to have to do a lot of... very literal carrying, here. So they take a step in front of Duval and kneel, looking over their shoulder as they motion for him to climb on.
Again, he'll find himself weightless. Not so much so that he can't walk or move on his own, but enough that settling on Purple's back will be like he isn't there at all.]
Here. The first section in front of us seems tricky, but I have no reason to believe I can't conquer it, even with you upon my back.
no subject
[Duval settles on Purple’s back and it’s go time.
The first stage of the obstacle course does seem a bit tricky. It’s a wall to climb and not only are the pegs and footholds made of that gymnasium pit foam that is hard to get a good grip on, but they also alternate popping in and out of the wall.
He watches some of the participants panic and try to move too fast over the wall, only to tumble right back to the bottom. Whereas some are too cautious and meet the same fate. The key to this challenge is timing. Purple should have no trouble with that.
At the very least...] Focus on climbing. I’ll tell you when they’re about to change.
[Or use their magic. He won't snitch, obviously.]
no subject
And yeah. That definitely looks tricky. If this wasn't Purple Mage looking at it, it'd look impossible for someone of their build (... and lack of physical activity for perhaps hundreds of thousands of years).
And yet.]
... Right. Wrap your legs around me if you can - that will allow me to free my arms so that I can...
Climb.
[Something they'll start to do once Duval's got himself clamped onto them sturdy (and convincingly) enough!
It's obvious from how it feels being carried that Purple's gone and made themself weightless, too... but at least their fake climbing looks nice and plausible.]
no subject
To keep up their façade, Duval does as he said he would. He keeps track of the time and tells Purple when and where he thinks they should "climb" next until they're at the top. And with the first hurdle crossed... Duval feels way more confident about their prospects. He got unusually lucky with this. In more ways than one.
The rest of the course proceeds about the same. Purple carries him, weightless, around and above and beyond the obstacles while the judges and onlookers watch on none the wiser.
And with their outfits secured and finally out of earshot of anyone who would care, Duval books it into Purple’s personal space.]
What are you? I’ve never felt magic like that before.
[This is what he means by getting lucky in more ways than one. Purple is a whole enigma, and Duval is fascinated.]
no subject
They're also keeping themself off the ground, too. A solid four or five inches, just to really make sure their robe doesn't drag against the earth.
That question gives them a moment's pause, though, as they stare at Duval, unblinking, and think of how to answer it.]
"What" I am is a bit difficult to answer. I can tell you, if you're truly curious about that.
"Who" I am, however, is much simpler for the both of us -
I am Purple Mage. Just "Purple" suffices, if you prefer.
no subject
Hearing "mage" makes Duval, furrow his eyebrows, though.]
I am. Curious, I mean. I'd like to know. Because mages are something very different where I'm from... Purple. [He tests out their name, as strange as the rest of them.]
You can call me Duval.
no subject
[They take a second's pause to open their cloak, their magic tucking that outfit into their arms so they can keep it out of the elements.
And so they aren't distracted trying to both talk and keep it in the air at the same time.]
... I hail from a realm known as the "Everhood". As the name suggests, its inhabitants are immortals.
I am one of them. While my looks don't quite match your own, I am technically human as well despite this -
The many ages I had spent in that realm, as well as the acceptance of my powers, simply changed me to better suit it.
Does this... sate that curiosity?
no subject
But, much like with Baizhu, Duval wants to make a semi-decent first impression on this person.]
Well, regardless, thank you. It’s nice to have an outfit that I didn’t have to make for once.
no subject
[Their eyes literally glow with interest at the idea, and while they don't float any closer, they sure do lean in toward him more.]
Those who live here natively struggle to understand my...
Abnormalities. I'd rather not rely on them whenever feasible.
no subject
I do. I basically ran my mother's tailor shop back home, and I've been taking commissions here, albeit casually.
[It's funny how he's planning on doing the opposite in Ellipsa to what he had going on in his home world: starting an apothecary shop while doing tailoring on the side. He has his reason, but still.]
I can certainly make you some pieces. It's the least I can do.
no subject
[Which is something they're going to try to remember to say out loud for the people trapped here with them.
Not that anyone back home could ever tell how they felt, either. Considering their facial features consist of two little pinpricks of white light against a completely void background.
But still. Connecting with others here is more important than it had been back in the Everhood.]
... I can promise you no riches in return, but I also don't ask for much.
I will take anything you are willing to make for me.
no subject
[Up until now, Duval has mostly stuck to making clothes in his own preferred style, and the alterations he made for work were usually for formal wear. Suits and slim fitting dresses. Wedding gowns. The usual.
The variety Ellipsa has offered him is nice.]
I’ll make you whatever you need.
no subject
[There's a measure of amazement in their voice saying as much, too. Mostly because, y'know.
They've existed for millions of years, yet have never really gotten any real kindness from anyone.
Even being scooped up off the streets and offered their powers entailed giving up their autonomy and enduring excruciating pain for who knows how long. The kindest thing anyone had ever done for them was kill them.
Basically, Duval's instantly befriended them. Instantly.
And may have to deal with having them around whenever they feel like it, because unfortunately for him, mages can teleport.]
You say you take payment in... plants? Is there any plant you've been looking for in particular?
no subject
He clears this throat to recover...]
Any of the native plants here, really. Even the ones I've already gotten my hands on; it doesn't hurt to have a wider sample size.
no subject
Frankly, even if he does act rudely with them, he's still better than Gold Pig was. So their point still stands.
Duval's nice. That's just how it is now.]
I see. A broad category, but one I'll keep in mind for your sake.
And one more question -
Is there anything you need of me in order to make these pieces?
no subject
[Or rather, they have to because Duval doesn't carry measuring tape around with him everywhere. Even though that seems like a very Duval thing to do.]
no subject
[From the way they blink and cast their gaze at the ground for a second, it's clear they somehow managed to forget that measurements are needed for something like this - unsurprising, considering they probably haven't interacted with a tailor in thousands of years.
They're still getting used to touch without a layer of heavy cloth between themself and the world - or several layers, in the case of the outfit they wore for this obstacle course - but... this would be a good way to help with that, wouldn't it?
It's not like Duval plans on manhandling them or something. Hopefully. And maybe this will prove him trustworthy, someone they can go to in the future if they need touch again--
After that second's up, they look up to his face again and give him a little nod.]
I can do that, so long as you are careful.
no subject
Oh? How do you mean? [A beat.] Of course I will be; I'm a professional.
no subject
... But. How to explain this?]
I... do not remember the last time I was touched by anyone without a barrier between myself and them. ... Well, no -
I recently wrapped a finger around that of someone else so that I could test this realm's magic.
[A single finger. And it was done with so much trepidation that even Nenonen was concerned for them.]
But before then, it must have been many, many centuries. Perhaps thousands of years.
It's far in the past, beyond what I can remember.
So I ask that you be a bit... gentle with me, as you take my measurements. I am not sure how it will feel.
no subject
I see. Then I assure you, I'll only touch you as much as necessary. [Duval nods to himself. And he will be gentle.] Despite the nature of this world, I think a lot of us aren't keen on touching people so casually.
[Past romps in the meadow not included.]
no subject
But Duval's assurances seem to work - if they had the ability, they might have even smiled a bit for it. But, y'know.
No mouth.
Congrats to Duval for convincing them he's nice even further, though.]
Thank you. Somehow... I feel I can trust that you mean that.
Is there any time in particular that you'd like me to visit for this?
My schedule is completely free. We can base it around yours.
no subject
Evenings then. Any evening. I do most of my sewing then, so you can see some of the other pieces I'm working on.
[Y'know. Get some ideas.]
oh, tags this back super belatedly
[They have no qualms against the idea - it's quite the opposite, in fact.
They have no one and nothing in this world. It'd be nice to have someone and something.
And that feels a bit like what Duval is offering.]
hell yeah
[They certainly won't be able to get everything done in one go. Especially if Duval’s being gentle about it. Plus, he doesn’t mind. There is worse company to keep than this strange, ancient shadow.]
You can come and go as you please.
