[As if he hadn't realised that he'd spoken out loud, Alhaitham glances at the man who addresses him and quirks one eyebrow slightly.

Ah, he had said something, hadn't he. He frowns slightly at the stone in his hand and then pockets it.]

That's right enough. I don't think anyone should miss it.

[Then, after another moment.]

You look as if you'd rather be anywhere else.

I hate the cold.

[ Said plainly, as if it wasn't obvious to the guy. Of course he hates it, he's dressed exactly like someone who hates it would. But, he still says it. Unfortunately, being tied to winter hasn't helped him with that yet. Hopefully in time as he gets a better grip on the magic. He sighed. ]

But I was too curious about what would be out here to pass it up. I was planning to maybe keep one or two things, too.

[ He was mostly just curious about them, but he was never going to get a good look out here. ]

[He studies Jayce for a moment. He isdressed exactly like someone who hates being cold would be dressed, while Alhaitham himself opted for multiple light layers that are keeping him quite warm without being bulky or uncomfortable. The young man briefly adjusts his scarf, then clears his throat.]

Have you found your curiosity adequately sated to make up for the conditions?

[Look at him, making conversation. Kaveh would be proud.]

Not quite yet, but I'm sure in no time it will be. The same for you, or just like it up here?

[ He couldn't blame him if he liked it - it's quiet beyond the steady striking of ice. A good place to read with minimal distraction. Which he's realizing he is, now. So he shifts back to a chunk of ice, determined and certain he'll find something worthwhile. if only because there's things with magical properties here. They would be worth studying and seeing what that even meant. Or if he could get them free of the ice chunk without damaging it in another location.

Still, he'll bring the pickaxe down with a crack. ]

I'm sure there could be effective tools for this...

[ He could certainly come up with something, he thinks. With the help of the magic of this place, it would probably be pretty effective. Or he could just...alter the one he has. He's scheming a little. ]

Mining tools might damage things, though...

[ His voice trails in thought. ]

I believe that is why they were quite specific in their recommendation of methods.

[Alhaitham isn't having any trouble after all, given the affinity for fire that being here has granted him. Dendro would not fare well in any respect somewhere like this.

Jayce is certainly a distraction but he is not one that Alhaitham finds fully objectionable yet, so he regards the man quietly while he mutters to himself.]

You have an idea.

Exactly why. They would know -- but...

[ He has ideas. A lot of ideas. He stops and lifts up the pickaxe less than delicately, examining the work on it as he pulls off a glove and moves his finger over the head of the pickaxe, where it meets the wooden handle of it. He examines it closely. It's so straightforward a design -- he puts his glove back on immediately, not wanting to leave himself exposed to the cold for long.

May there be a day where he likes the cold. He can only imagine how much worse this would be if he didn't naturally run a little warmer. ]

I have a few. I'm sure I could make some changes to what they've given us.

[ Or dismantle it and use its components. Automation would be neat. Use the tools and then the people would be more equipped to fight. A pickaxe on its own is a fairly effective weapon if used that way. But being able to focus on one task would probably make whatever they're searching for easier to find - or at least, a faster find. He slams the pickaxe down into the ice again. ]

I wonder if they'll raise any objections if one of them mysteriously goes missing.

[ Just to see what it is that makes this pickaxe special. ]

I don't see why they would think too much of it. I'm sure tools get dropped and left behind all the time.

[Scholars are careless that way. He doesn't imagine that people who come out here to work in these areas every day would be so blase about their tools, but for someone who was just handed one to do a little digging..?

Or you could simply offer to compensate them for it.
