[Open Log] Faith alone can't get me where I need to go
WHO: Jean Kirstein & you
WHAT: Jean's training arc continues, with new skills, old skills and slightly overworking
WHEN: December
WHERE: Specified in the prompts
WARNINGS: will add as needed
A. New Skill Unlocked
[Dayrise, Grand Coliseum] [Warning for Elastic/Extending Limbs]
At first, Jean had only been able to make his fingers longer. It had felt really weird, so he hadn't tried it again for the moment. But with time he got used to the feeling and kept practicing.
So now someone may walk into the coliseum and see Jean with a three times longer right arm, grabbing onto something in the distance. He was still testing how well he could use his fingers when they were so far away from him. Not very well, especially when it was hard to see what he was grabbing.
Another problem was when the arm returned to its regular size, it... kinda came back with a force and ended up slapping Jean in the face. All part of the learning curve. But also very frustrating.
"GAH!"
B. Fire Control
[Dayrise, Grand Coliseum]
Practicing fire was something Jean was more accustomed to, but he was still struggling a little bit with a certain fire skill. So instead of going around throwing fire punches or kicks in the air or forming fire weapons, he's focusing on his breathing.
A tiny ember formed with a short breath. Then a deeper breath and a longer trail of fire, going through the air where he wanted it to go, not catching anything else on fire. Everything was going like he hoped. He could do controlled fire.
Then he took a deep, deep breath and put all his strength into blowing out fire. The goal was that it would just travel through the air, harmless. Just like the other two had.
It went straight to the ground and started burning sand all over instead. It definitely didn't go where Jean intended it to go, so that was still a work in process.
"Fuck."
C. Training, training
[Dayrise, Grand Coliseum]
Does it ever feel like anytime you run into Jean, he has a different weapon? It probably does feel like it, since he has so many different weapons he was trying to master the use of. A sword that he was already pretty good at, a polearm that he was still studying but getting better all the time, and most recently a chain whip that he was really new at.
If he doesn't have a weapon in hand, he's practicing hand-to-hand combat in different kind of forms he's learned from various people or doing simple parkour around some obstacles in Dayrise.
Yeah, it's more common to see him training than not. Recently, he's even gotten more fuel to his training fire, thanks to new arrivals that he very much wanted to keep safe and sound.
D. Exhaustion catching up
[Solarpeak, Dayrise, Blossomcrown]
Of course, when you train too much, eventually you run out of energy, which means Jean is often taking a nap in a little unexpected places. He may be napping at the Solarpeak beach, or maybe he's crashed in the middle of the Grand Coliseum in Dayrise. It's also entirely possible to see him almost falling asleep at some bench in the Blossomcrown Park when he's supposed to be watching one of his and Mikasa's three dogs (a white husky named Snow, a German Shepherd named Hazel and a Pegasus Puppy Akita Inu named Maru).
Yeah, he might be overdoing it, just a little bit.

[Galliard watches with interest as Jean changes the colour of the flames.]
Like that. How do you do that?
no subject
You need to focus the fire and think about how safety feels. At least that's how it works for me. The color of the flame is something unique to you, so don't think about any colors. Just the safety.
[He nods towards the flame.]
Try it out.
no subject
[Galliard makes a sound that's half scoff, half disbelieving laugh.]
I don't know what that feels like anymore.
no subject
How about... the feeling of wanting to protect someone?
no subject
[Galliard takes a deep breath and really thinks about it. Who does he want to protect?]
[The first answer is obvious: Pieck. They've fought side-by-side so many times that he knows all her moves, and her his. They're a great team, and a major consideration in battle is clearing the way so she can get in with her Panzer unit.]
[He doesn't want to protect Zeke. Fuck that guy. He never needed the Jaw's help anyway.]
[And then there's Reiner, whose titan is too big and bulky to deal with smaller, faster opponents. He can take out gun turrets but get snarled up by a clever sniper getting in close and aiming for his face. That's where Galliard comes in, using his speed and agility to clear the way for the Armoured.]
[So yeah. Pieck and Reiner. They're who he wants to protect.]
[Galliard breathes, and focuses, turning his palms to the sky and opening them, letting the flames build between his fingers. When he opens his eyes, the fire is burning a deep, almost crimson red.]
Huh. It worked.
no subject
You'll be able to make your own fire's harmless, as well as existing fire. It comes in handy until you'll learn to walk through fire without getting burned. I don't know how to do that yet, either, so this is all I've got for fire protection.
[He hasn't wanted to try yet.]
no subject
[Galliard is a little surprised when Jean smiles at him, but he readily smiles back. So far, Marco is the only one from Paradis who smiles at him. He can add Jean to that list too, apparently.]
Do you have to make it change colours for it to not burn someone? Could I touch your green fire and have it not hurt me?
no subject
[It would have been cool to have an automatic protection to your own element. But he supposes that would be overpowered compared to other seasons.
Jean lights up another green fire on top of his palm. Then he puts his own hand into the fire to demonstrate.]
It feels like something, but it doesn't hurt or burn. It doesn't catch anything else on fire either, but it does spread on the ground.
no subject
[Definitely lamer for Jean than for Galliard; he can heal himself if he slips up and scorches a finger. For now, though, he'll keep that information on the down-low. It'll get out sooner or later, but he'd like to control when and how that happens.]
[Galliard runs his hand through his own fire, and it doesn't burn him.
He raises an eyebrow at Jean.]
Would you mind if I touched yours? Just to confirm it doesn't burn other people?
[He doesn't think Jean is lying to him, but it would be foolish not to check.]
no subject
Go ahead.
[It's also kind of a trust exercise, since Jean could just turn the fire normal anytime. Not that he would, but still.]
no subject
[Galliard runs his hand through Jean's fire, and no, it doesn't burn him. It feels warm and soothing, almost like a hot bath.]
Do you know why yours is green? Or does the fire choose its own color?
no subject
No idea. I had no say in it, so I guess it just randomly chooses a color.
[He lets the flame go before forming a weapon in his hands with fire. It's a giant axe he seems to be holding without any effort or burning.]
Just like this. If I just focus on "make a weapon" without specifying what, I get an axe.
no subject
[Galliard nods in understanding, and closes his hand, extinguishing the small fire. He watches Jean make that axe, then looks down at his hands and tries to do the same. Fire flickers across his palms, then settles on the backs of his hands. The fire burns over his knuckles, and grows out from them into long, nasty-looking claws of flame.]
[Galliard looks down at them and grins.]
Cool.
no subject
[Guess who still doesn't know Galliard even is a titan. This guy.]
But you learn fast. I need to up my game, so I don't get overshadowed by new summer holders.
no subject
[Galliard keeps admiring his flame claws. He flexes his hand, making them dance and catch the light.]
I’ve still got a lot to learn before I catch up to you. I wouldn’t be too worried yet.
[Yet. Never let it be said that Galliard backs away from competition.]
no subject
You say that and then suddenly surpass me if I let myself relax.
[It's said in good humor.]
