The expression on Reiner's face reminds Galliard, once again, of what an utter little shit he was to Reiner, for most of their lives (for almost all of Galliard's life). He knows he can't take that back, now that he knows the truth about everything, but he can try to make up for it.

"Yeah?" He keeps his voice soft. "What mission is that?"

He has an inkling what Reiner might be talking about, but he needs it confirmed.

"Collecting fireflies," Reiner answers, encouraged by the continued softness in Galliard's voice. Few people speak softly to Reiner; it reminds him of Bertholdt, which encourages him to continue.

"It's part of my training." He sits up straighter as he gains confidence, hoping Galliard approves. "It'll test my reflexes and speed. I need to get better at those. So I'll keep working hard, even here."

"I see." Galliard hasn't realised that his soft voice is helping encourage Reiner to talk to him, but he's going to keep it pitched low anyway. He has enough experience being around the younger Warrior trainees to know that yelling tends to startle them.

Reiner's response makes Galliard's heart ache. Were they all like this, so long ago? Did they ever stand a chance, having their childhood ripped away from them? Will Gabi and Falco ever look back and mourn the childhood Marley stole away?

He crouches down next to Reiner, unscrewing the lid from his own jar. "Do you want to help me catch some too? I can show you a few tricks I've learned."

Confronting the issue won't be helpful. Galliard isn't sure how he knows this, but he feels it deep in his soul. Maybe, if he keeps this up, he can give Reiner a few moments of actually feeling like a kid.
