Event #14: Locking Up the Sun and Moon

Locking Up the Sun and Moon
LOGS | NETWORK | OOC | MEMES | NAVIGATION

Keep it Clean

Part 1

All of the four guilds are hosting a spring cleaning weekend. There are plenty of things to do! Organizing tools, prepping ready-to-go adventure packages for future endeavors, throwing out old and used things that can't be repaired to give some examples. There's a lot of activity in the buildings and anyone who even glances at them will be pestered to join.

Everyone who participates in the event will get a free ready-to-go adventure package that they can take with them next time they're going questing. The package includes rations, barrier stones, enchanted ropes, emergency one-use travel crystals & as a set of segment-appropriate tools: ice axes & - picks made of crystals to pierce even tougher surfaces, gravity boots that keep someone down during any kind of wind, portable fans that keep someone nicely cool and a cape that turns into a full rain and thunder proof raincoat when the first drops fall.

All of it is, however, a coverup. On Friday, a message was sent to all otherworlders, telling them about the upcoming mission preparations being masqueraded as a spring cleaning event. They still haven't found whoever has been leaking information, so this is a way to keep them out of the loop. Further details of the mission will be given on Monday through the same method.

There's also a request to keep an eye on any of the guild staff in case they do something suspicious or ask too many questions.

Part 2

The message on Monday is cancelled. Instead, come Sunday evening all of the lights flicker and disappear from the city. Not long after most of the electricity in the city also gets cut off. Panic starts spreading in the city and locals start running around, bumping into each other in the darkness.

Some of the districts do have backup generators that they can use to maintain important devices. There are also movable generators that can be delivered to other locations as needed and otherworlders are asked to help move them more quickly.

Despite electricity being restored, the light sources still malfunction. Any lamps just stay dark, almost as if the lightbulbs have burned out. Yet changing them doesn't do anything. Even the tacky neon signs are out of order. The only sources of light are flashlights, candles and whatever magic and abilities can do at this point.

Because even the night sky seems to be entirely too dark.

When The Lights Go Out

Part 1

In the segments, the nights become even darker than before. The moon and the stars disappear from the sky, leaving behind only a blank black canvas. Creatures and plants with the ability to glow or otherwise provide light are the only things that can be seen in the distance.

Hours pass by and morning comes, but the sky is still pitch black. Even the sun has disappeared from the sky and it's impossible to tell the time of day. All of the creatures in the Segments are unpredictable due to this weird change - even aggressive.

Anyone with the ability to get to the skies will note that it's not that the objects of the sky have disappeared; it's like something is blocking them. It's a black veil that feels impossible to break and touching it will make someone suffer from burn damage (even if they'd be resistant to fire). The part of the body that touched the black veil will be stained with black curse energy that will start to spread across the body.

Following the black veil it looks like it's truly spread around the whole world. The dragons will inform anyone they find that there are mysterious black rods near the barriers that are sending energy towards the skies. They tried to get rid of them but they have the same effect as the black veil.

Part 2

Inside the city chaos worsens. Criminals start targeting locals and stores all over the places, robbing whatever they get their hands on. For some reason it seems that all of the criminals are able to see just fine. Anyone who is connected to the crime questboard will have received special contact lenses that will let them see normally in complete darkness.

To make matters worse the Nightwake Main Police Station is under attack as well. Criminals are escaping their jail cells and taking hostages. They range from petty thieves to serial killers. The police force is doing whatever they can to capture them again and protect the citizens. Many of the escapees won't go down without a fight, and some might force a lethal confrontation.

A group of the Nightshade gang is also headed to find the Doctor to release him, armed with weapons and bombs that contain poison. They are determined to free their 'Master' and bring him to safety.

Otherworlders are called to help with the situation. They're even offered all kinds of safety gear, including bulletproof vests and masks that protect from poison. Even all of the four guild leaders can be seen fighting criminals, both inside the police station and outside.

Part 3

Criminals aren't the only danger in the city during the darkness. Creatures of the night start appearing. A clan of vampires that has been hiding in the city's darkest corners take a step forward, targeting anyone for blood. These vampires look very much like humans, but it's all just a glamour and anyone who has the ability to see through them will see their true forms.

Vampires are humanoid creatures, but they're very monster-like otherwise. Their skin is pale and their eyes are blood red. In addition to their sharp fangs, they also have very long nails. Depending on how fed they are, their appearance will change. Those who have recently had blood will look 'healthy' and resemble humans more closely, while those starving look like they're about to wither away.

Being bit by a vampire doesn't necessarily turn anyone into one. However the risk gets higher the longer the vampire feeds on the person. Those left on the brink of death will turn into a vampire unless they die first. Those turned into vampires are likely to attack the first person they see due to hunger.

Vampires can't stand in the sun for long periods of time, otherwise they will burn. They also can't see their reflection on the mirror, which is also a way to identify one. All of the vampires also have superhuman strength and speed and can only be killed by either a stab to their heart or by decapitation.

Tied Up Solution

Part 1

The situation in Nightwake takes a positive turn as all the electricity and lights are fully restored by Wednesday. The skies, however, still continue to be pitch black.

Most of the criminals start retreating, attempting to flee back into their hideouts. Some, however, continue their crime sprees stubbornly and get more reckless without the cover of darkness. Some of them are even trying to destroy all of the streetlights to bring back their cover.

The worst of the chaos at the police station dies down by Thursday evening. There are still criminals on the run and the whole place is a mess, but the greatest dangers have been dealt with. What happened to the Doctor is still a mystery as the part of the building he was in collapsed during the fights. Until the debris has been cleared out they will assume the Doctor missing.

The guild leaders start figuring out a solution to what is happening with the sky, together with the Fairy Queen, the Dragon Lord, the Mermaid Queen and the Siren King.

Part 2

On Saturday the guild leaders contact all of the otherworlders. A solution to their problem has been found after investigation and analyzation. Everyone is asked to gather at the guilds as soon as possible.

Everyone is tasked to travel to one of the edges of the barrier, as marked on the map. They're the locations of the dark rods that are creating the black veil on the sky. The dragons will take anyone there quickly with their fast travel abilities.

There the otherworlders are tasked to work in pairs or groups and stand somewhere near the dark rod without touching it. They're provided with a special fairy ribbon that is tied around their hands.

Once everything is set up, the task is to channel both touch energy and magical energy into the ribbon. This will take time and concentration and all of the people connected to the ribbon have to achieve harmony. This may fail, but it can always be attempted again.

Only once the required energies are in the ribbon will it move and touch the dark rod, clearing a portion of the dark energy away from it. If someone's concentration fails at the last moment the spell will backfire and send them flying backwards. There's also a risk of getting a part of the corruption due to it.

After enough people have used the ribbon to clear the darkness from the rod it will turn white and break, leaving glittering particles in the air. A portion of the sky is freed from the veil. Once all of the rods are gone, the skies return to normal.

Those who have at any point gotten corrupted by the black veil or the dark rods will find that their corruption starts clearing in the sun- or moonlight. However, some may end up not healing properly, depending on how far the corruption has gone. They are invited to the Fairy Kingdom for some intense healing that will take 24 hours - and a lot of fairy dust.

Part 3

Once again the otherworlders are regarded as heroes. There would be a party, but the city is a huge mess after the chaos. However, they are promised a big feast once everything has been cleared out and made right again.

For now everyone receives a hefty prize of 10,000 Moon Coins and gift cards to either a nice spa weekend or a fancy restaurant.

[ Reiner's brow pinches, conflict in his eyes. Instinct tells him to get away or to fight; it tells him he's facing a threat. But his heart tells him this is Frieda. Frieda Reiss, who is proud of him.

She puts a hand to her head. Reiner's heart wins. ]

… Move slowly, [ Reiner tells her, rolling up his right sleeve. ] And drink from my arm, not my neck.

[ There's no way in hell he's letting her near his neck—his nape—when she's clearly not well. ]

[Much as the bloodlust has addled her mind, her smile of relief at his acceptance is sincere, and the predatory intensity leaves her eyes. While she managed to keep the usual warmth in her voice, it no longer strains her to do so now that she has permission to drink (sadly, not from his neck - but as a fellow titan shifter, albeit not a professional combatant, she understands his protective instinct).]

Thank you, Reiner.

[She takes his arm in her cold hands as if it were a precious artifact, gently supporting his wrist (to keep tabs on his pulse, perhaps) while her other hand's fingertips follow the veins on his forearm, selecting the richest one. Turning slightly towards him so she can obscure what she's doing from passersby with her veil of hair, she bites down.

All things considered, Reiner's pain tolerance is far higher than required for this, but the psychological discomfort of having her drain his blood - blood he needs to stay alive, to keep defending Amberfall, to check on Eren and Bertholdt and everyone else - may be harder to bear. She does keep her promise, however, and stops after drinking about the equivalent of a medium-sized glass, pulling away with a blood-smeared mouth.]

I feel much so better. Really, I can't thank you enough. Are you alright?

[His wound won't require her healing magic, but she at least shows him the courtesy of offering him a handkerchief first before cleaning her own face up.]

[ It's difficult to stay still. Difficult to suppress the close-combat training that demands he strike out, knock her back, restrain her, kill her if he has to. His teeth clench, and he breathes slowly through his nose, feeling himself growing colder. Feeling the blood sucked from his veins.

In a way, though, it feels strangely fitting. He's an Eldian, and she is royalty. Reiner has bowed to higher authority his whole life. Isn't it right, in a way, that he should serve her like this…?

Maybe his mind is just trying to find meaning behind serving as food.

Almost as soon as her teeth leave his arm, there's a hiss of steam as Reiner heals the wounds. No delay there, no impairment to his ability to heal. He should be able to regenerate the blood quicker than a normal human, too. All things considered, he's probably the ideal blood bank. ]

I'm all right. [ He searches Frieda's eyes as he wipes off his arm. ] Are you?
urtitan: (Facing Fate)

[personal profile] urtitan 2025-06-01 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
[While her eyes remain as red as they were, her expression looks far more... well, human; less like her face might contort into a feral, fang-baring snarl any second. She's looking at him as a person again, no longer as a blood-bearing meat bag.

After a moment, though, her faint smile fades as she realises just how close she came to attacking him like a wild beast. In her hunger, she felt such aggression towards him for his hesitation, even extended it towards Eren too for his hypothetical objection... her brows furrow. This is yet another setback, isn't it? Not only is her entire life derailed from its regular structure, but she's struggling to treat her fellow Eldians fairly in a whole new way. Was she just meant to always tread on them and treat them as disposable?]

I am.

[She puts a hand on his, just briefly, in gratitude and reassurance. It's only now that she idly wonders how she managed to keep her memory-reading ability suppressed despite her single-minded thirst... if nothing else, it looks like her new instincts have seamlessly integrated with the old ones.]

My first order of business now will be to secure a good quantity of animal blood provisions. I'll make sure to drink it regularly.

[She doesn't owe him accountability, not as his queen... but as his friend, she does. She wants him to know:]

I won't make this a habit.
hometown: (hmmmm)

[personal profile] hometown 2025-06-01 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
[ Reiner watches her as she speaks, noting the changes in her expression. Watching those red eyes. It's strange; like this, she almost looks like a mirror of Eren. Red versus green. ]

If it does get this bad again, come to me. I can regenerate quickly.

[ Better him than someone who may not understand. Hell, even Reiner is struggling to understand.

He takes a second to center himself, checking to see how he feels. How close other people might be, the information picked up through subtle vibrations in the earth. Maps the way to Amberfall's library in his mind. ]

The library is probably closed during all this, [ he admits. ] But as soon as this is over, you'll go there, right?
urtitan: (Titan Steam)

[personal profile] urtitan 2025-06-01 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
[That's just like you, she thinks at his offer. He's selfless and kind, and she absolutely doesn't want to lose control of herself - be it to this bloodlust or to her ancestor's vow - to the point where she'll take advantage of him yet again.]

I will. I need to know how to take care of myself like this, for my sake and that of others. I know one of the otherworlder employees... I'll reach out to him. Perhaps he can let me in on short notice.

[Hopefully, Neuvillette is safe and unharmed and able to respond to her.

Letting her eyes rest on Reiner and seeing how he simply... accepts what just happened, showing no anger or hurt or resentment, she briefly touches his cheek, then actually moves in to hug him, hands on back, well away from his nape.]

Thank you for trusting me. Most people wouldn't have, and rightly. Reiner, you're such a good person.

[Not 'Eldian'. He may have acted out of obligation to his souvereign, but she'd like to believe that he'd have done the same for her if she were the mere noble she pretended to be.]
hometown: (maybe he couldn't)

[personal profile] hometown 2025-06-01 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
[ The hug is unexpected. Reiner tenses for a second—a surprised reaction, not a fearful one. Then he relaxes, arms rising to return the hug.

Maybe he should be scared of her. Maybe he should be upset by what happened. But the fact is, Reiner has dealt with terrifying and impossible situations for his whole life. Even now, the stars have vanished from the sky, and his new home is under attack from criminals.

If he freaked out now, how would he get through the day? How would he keep moving forward?

So he keeps it inside, compartmentalizing his feelings to sort through them later. Focusing on what needs to be done. Hoping nothing breaks through his composure and sends him spiraling. ]

I want you to be okay.

[ That's another part of it. She may be a vampire now, but she's still Frieda. Still someone for whom Reiner cares.

And there's very little Reiner won't do for his loved ones. ]
urtitan: (Content)

[personal profile] urtitan 2025-06-02 07:20 am (UTC)(link)
[Being hugged back feels good. It makes her feel like she hasn't forfeited her humanity yet, despite it all. Drawing back, she smiles at him again, and the fondness in her voice is heartfelt.]

I will be. Your blood has given me everything I need. Will you be okay, too?

[In terms of, well, everything - has he eaten, has he slept, is there anything he needs in terms of materials, magic, information? Important as her research is, Reiner is more imporant.]
hometown: (stay calm)

[personal profile] hometown 2025-06-02 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'll be fine.

[ Right now, Reiner can't imagine being anything other than "fine." He has a home to protect. He's going to do so, and damn anyone who tries to stop him.

That said: ]

How are things in the other districts? Do you know if people are defending them?
urtitan: (Morose)

[personal profile] urtitan 2025-06-03 09:20 am (UTC)(link)
I think so.

[Not that she's visited all the districts - she's barely been home to Solarpeak ever since the sky went dark.]

It seems like the worst unrest is happening in the city centre, so most capable otherworlders are probably focusing their defence efforts there. But I'm sure that people are protecting their home districts, too. There are shelters everywhere to provide electricity, heating, cooling, food and so on... I'd wager that otherworlders are guarding those, though I don't think any have been targeted. I helped provide light to a food preservation site before I realised how many people were getting hurt elsewhere.

[Ever since, she's been assisting at the various hospitals.]

...

I'd never have thought that there were so many unscrupulous people in Nightwake. There's no place without crime, but the extent of it...

[Once more, she mentally chides herself for her naivety. She of all people, who holds the memories of their world's history of violence, should have known better.]
hometown: (why so much lip if not to kiss)

[personal profile] hometown 2025-06-03 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Reiner listens to Frieda's explanation, relieved that there are other people out guarding various districts. Not that he would leave Amberfall even if there weren't. If it came down to it, Amberfall would become the last bastion of sanity in a city full of chaos—and Reiner would crush anyone who threatened it. Literally. ]

I wouldn't have thought so, either, [ he admits. ] When they all move at once, it makes a big difference.

It doesn't help that this darkness makes it hard to determine exact numbers.
urtitan: (Profile)

[personal profile] urtitan 2025-06-03 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll help with that if I can. I can see clearly in the dark now.

[She manages a slightly awkward smile - they have to count their blessings, right?]

I want to prioritise supporting the clinics, but whenever I'm out of mana, I'll try to help the authorities tally the bad actors. I can move quietly and quickly, so it oughtn't be too big of a risk.

[Hearing herself talk like this, boasting vampire- and spring mage skills, feels surreal, but she desperately wants to repay Reiner somehow and, seeing his concerns, what better way than by doing her part in protecting their new home?]
hometown: (our hometown)

[personal profile] hometown 2025-06-04 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
[ Reiner's expression eases slightly. ]

I'm sure the authorities would appreciate that. But don't overdo it, all right? You don't want to tax yourself and have to eat again early.

[ Is that how vampires work? Reiner can only assume so. He knows how hungry he can get if he overdoes it. ]
urtitan: (Laughing)

[personal profile] urtitan 2025-06-04 12:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I won't - and I'll make sure to always have provisions on me.

[The two of them may share a tendency to put their duty over their needs, but looking after herself is now a necessity if she wants to keep others safe from her hunger. She exhales and gives him a big, encouraging smile (hopefully, her fangs don't detract from the sentiment!).]

This world shows us the strangest trials... but we'll persevere, won't we?

[They've all had to face difficult challenges of which this crisis is only the latest, but nothing can make them forget that this is a place that accepts them - as foreigners, as titan shifters, as Eldians. In the eyes of the regular populace, they're welcome here, and that enables her to keep applying herself even without a pulse and heartbeat.]
hometown: (love letters)

🎀 wrap!

[personal profile] hometown 2025-06-04 03:51 pm (UTC)(link)
We will, [ Reiner affirms, nodding. ] We'll keep moving forward.

[ Even now, as their new home is under attack. That's what they can do. ]
