Beginning of something new

A traditional Japanese house with a guest house attached to it, connected by a wooden terrace. Jean and Mikasa live in the main house, while Mukuro has the guest one all to herself. The yard may not look exactly like that and is very pet-friendly.

The house also comes with an attached stable that their horses live in.

None of them wanted to have a proper housewarming party, but they did invite guests over after they had all settled in to have some food and drinks and to see what the house looks like. It's still not quite done as far as decorating goes, but they do have basic things like a dining table and some cabinets in place at this point. The deck outside the house is also a nice place to hang out in.

Jean and Mikasa's three pets are wandering around the house and the yard. There's Snow the Husky, Hazel the German Shepherd and Sakura the Norwegian Forest Cat. Mukuro's Guinea Pigs Frigg and Freya are contently living in her room.

Eren has no idea what to do at a housewarming party, but he shows up anyway at Mikasa's behest. It's…a house! Eren has no attachment to living spaces, nothing he really owns yet; he doesn't think like that, even after living in Folkmore for the better part of a year.

He has his own pet along, a Yamask that he has never named. He didn't want to leave it back at the apartment, though.

He asked someone what to bring to a housewarming party and ended up with a candle that smells like lilies. Gold star for trying.

He's on the deck staying out of the way for the moment, but if he sees anyone that needs help he'll awkwardly offer.

"...You're Eren, right?"

There wasn't a long invite list, and as far as she was aware, he was the only one of them she hadn't met personally yet. So, the process of elimination was not a difficult one. She still didn't entirely get why Jean was grumpy about his presence, but well...whatever the situation between them was, she wanted to go meet him herself.

So, Eren'll find a freckled, serious-looking young woman around his age in loose camo clothing wandering over to talk.

"Mukuro Ikusaba."

Eren isn't used to being recognised these days, but it figures if someone knows Jean and Mikasa they'd know him too. He doesn't know her yet, but…well, they have time.

He's a little distant, but he nods in answer.

"Yeah. Nice to meet you." He's bad at socialisation now (though whether he was ever good at it is debatable).

"You…also live here?"

[Makoto was surprised to get an invitation, but at the same time glad that Mukuro was willing to interact with him this way. Inviting him to somewhere that was her space, meeting the friends she had made along the way.

He's enjoying a plate of some food that he was offered, sitting on the deck and watching the dogs run around on the yard. They had so much energy.]

[This boy looks so familiar... it takes Hijikata a while to remember where he saw his face before, but once he does he's really surprised to see him here. This is Naegi Makoto, isn't it? Mukuro's classmate who ended up trapped in the killing game she and Junko orchestrated. He "met" him when he experienced the nightmare at Hope's Peak Academy alongside her inside her spring equinox dream on Avalon.

But that would be really hard to explain, so he simply approaches the boy with his own (mayonnaise-laden) plate of food and offers a friendly nod. He won't even outright ask if he's Mukuro's friend. He won't make this weird!!]

A nice place they found themselves, isn't it?

[That. Sure is a lot of mayonnaise. Well, he's known people with weirder fixations, so he's not about to judge him.]

Yeah, it's a very nice house. [A beat. He should clarify who he knows...] I'm very glad Mukuro's found friends to move in with like this.

[He's going to eat it over the course of their chat, without any apparent physical consequences!]

You're her friend, then?

[Okay, so now he did ask... Makoto just made it happen too naturally to pass up!]

She's been through a bunch of things with Jean and Mikasa already, so it's nice for them all to live together now. I hope to move into this district as well in a month's time.

[Right, he should probably introduce himself--]

I'm Hijikata Toshirou. I met all of the others on Avalon - Mukuro told you about Avalon, right?

[It's a super power, being able to eat that much mayo.

Makoto can't really answer "it's complicated" at the friend question so he's just going to go for it.]

Yeah. We know each other from school.

[Which is just a normal school. And he definitely didn't forget her completely thanks to something her sister did. THIS IS FINE.]

Mukuro did mention being in two other places before this one and that she's made friends in them. She did mention your name too, Hijikata-san.

[Makoto smiles lightly.] My name Naegi Makoto. I arrived not too long ago, when there was the statue stampede going on.

[Oh, no worries Makoto, he knows.]

That's one hell of a time to arrive, but I see you made it out of the stampede in one piece. I hope Mukuro told you only good things about me?

[He doesn't know he knows! But he's very sorry that he does...]

That's definitely all thanks to Mukuro.

[She pulled him out of harms way and kept him safe until they were somewhere with less stampeding statues.]

Yes. She only had good things to mention about both you and Jean.

[He met the guy briefly. He was very tall and kind of intimidating, but seemed overall nice.]

[He smiles at that. He can count on Mukuro to present him (and Jean!!) in a good light!]

Have you already had time to figure out your seasonal powers? Or are you still settling in? By the way, did any other classmates arrive with you?

[Those were his classmates, too... in another AU life that could have been, at least!]

I'm still settling in. Though I'm pretty sure I've already unlocked the ability to see ghosts.

[You'd be surprised how many of them there are, it's better you don't know Hijikata.]

I've only met Mukuro so far. Which is strange because I was with others before appearing here so I thought they'd come along.

That's normal. You can be at a party and be the only person there to be called to another world, but your friend who lives halfway around the world may arrive with you instead. It's kind of random in that regard.

[Almost as random as the places ghosts may appear in around and beyond Nightwake City. It really is better that Hijikata doesn't know.]

You're a winter power holder, then? Being able to see ghosts is a really useful ability.

The ghosts you've seen so far, how were they doing?

[That's probably a really weird question, but he still can't fully shake his care for the souls of the dead. Death mage habits die hard!]

Ah... that explains it.

[Well, it should have been obvious it's random since Mukuro wasn't even supposed to be-- he holds that thought away. She was alive. And here, living a new better life. That's what mattered.]

Huh? Oh... they seem to be doing alright. The trash bin ones are a bit a of a menace, but other ghosts I've encountered seem content.

That's good to know.

[It's a relief, really. A faint smile crosses his face as he eats some more of his mayonnaise-covered food.]

If any of them ask you for help and you can afford to listen-- well, I don't need to tell you this, really.

[Makoto is a kind person. He'll help anyone if he can, dead or alive.]

I've been trying to stop and listen to them if I have a moment. It seems most just want someone to talk with.

[He has yet been sent on errands for ghosts.]

They'll be happy to have so many new people around to talk to, then.

[If only he could be one of them... but he wouldn't want to sacrifice his fire in exchange!]

It seems like most of them live in the Winter Segment. I've never really understood why ghosts like the cold so much.

I guess it doesn't really matter to them either way, since they can't feel anything. I would think they choose the cold since they're places living like to avoid. So they can be in peace, if they don't want to talk to anyone.

That makes sense. The antisocial ones go where no people are, the social ones do the opposite.

[He always thought all ghosts liked lonely and abandoned places - but now that he thinks about it, poltergeists specifically possess items and appliances to mess with people, don't they?]

Yeah. It's kind of the same with people, isn't it? Some of us are very social, some like being by themselves. Though I guess being alone in this world is a bad idea...

Oh, believe it.

[It's an especially bad idea to go out into the Segments alone. Don't ask him how he knows.]

But you're all set, aren't you? Everyone here will charge you up whenever you need it.

[Mukuro certainly isn't going to let him turn to stone, and Hijikata is sure the others would be as ready as he himself to help the boy out, too!]

Mm. I'm very lucky to have someone I know and her friends to help me out. I'm very grateful.

Ellipsa is lucky that you arrived here, too, I'd say. We need good problem-solvers for the situation here.

[Granted, this Darkness issue isn't really comparable with a murder game - and far be it from Hijikata to remind Makoto of that -, but his proverbial luck alone may just come in handy in unveiling the reasons behind what happened to this world!]

[Naegi's a little embarrassed by what Hijikata says.]

[He sees Jean carrying a bunch of drinks outside, so he moves to give him a hand, taking his empty plate with him and giving Makoto a friendly nod.]

[Hijikata brought some traditional, symbolic housewarming presents: a fresh loaf of bread (for ample food in the house at all times), three coins (for wealth), and a broom (to sweep out all the bad things). This house makes him nostalgic; it feels like being back in Edo. He can't help a joking remark, though.]

Everyone's moving to Sunwaning, it seems. At this rate Shoto and I won't find a place to live here anymore.

[Maybe if he hadn't decided to use up the rent-free period in the apartment building until the very end they wouldn't have this problem!]

[Jean was fine with having a birthday joint-dinner with Eren. Really, he was. Mostly at least. He had had many wonderdul privte birthday parties with Mikasa in the past years, so why couldn't he celebrate birthday together with Eren now.

Especially since there probably hadn't been a lot of chances for him to celebrate. Or reasons to. Unlike Jean and Mikasa who had all the time and chances to celebrate theirs.

... yeah it's slightly guilty concsience speaking. Sue him!!]

If I had more time I would have made you that sword for your present, but I'll make it later.

[Jean did make the appetizer sushi for this, that were already on the table. He wasn't sure what Mikasa had planned, he was kicked out of the kitchen since it was a surprise for them both.]

[ Eren doesn't really remember ever celebrating a birthday. They'd marked them at home a little. Congrats, you didn't die this year.

And…he didn't think he'd reach this one. He wasn't supposed to. There's something heavy attached to that. Does this really count as 20? He's not sure; time is wrong in his head at the best of times, and being removed from home can't fix that. He's aware that the clock is probably still ticking. Will he get three more of these and that's it? He's not sure. He tries not to think about it.

He doesn't mind celebrating with Jean, considering he didn't think he'd get to see Jean's next birthday either. ]

I'm sure it will be cool.

[ He sounds mostly deadpan when he says it, but he does mean it. He's just not as expressive as he used to be. Everything got too heavy to carry.

Eren brought a bottle of champagne that he picked up. He's not much of a drinker, really, but he snags on a memory they haven't lived through: the last time he remembers anything that might have been happiness, drinking with a bunch of people they can't understand, people whose kindness Eren knows he never deserved.

He shoves all that down again and waits for Mikasa. ]
