An immediate shut down in the idea of asking for help means one who is unlikely to practice adequate self care.

Acts of responsibility is also one of my "food" [finger quotes] sources. Its one of the easier ways for people to pay me since I do not have much need for material things.

You were gonna hold it over my head far beyond me paying you back for it.

It depends on what you me by 'hold it over your head.'

Because in truth, I only said that to give you the sense you have paid me back.

I mean making me miserable even after I've paid you back. 'm not a slave. And I won't be under anyone's thumb.

I'm rather certain slaves were discouraged from asking for help. Since their lives were usually under constant threat and all that.

Oh I am very aware. Not that slavery ended with Lincoln. Jim Crow still existed when I was alive.

I'm assuming those are notable historical figures from your world. Odds say a variation of 'Earth.' At least ninety percent of people seem to be from there.

I'm from a world called Thusia. Slavery has not been present in some time, but it is hard to think the concept on any world encourages those enslaved to think of their own health and wellbeing.

There were slave owners who were some measure of "kind," but that kindness would be more akin to worrying about the health of one's pet versus another person.

Admittedly, a lot of Verinne's flock were in such a position. Allowing one to live past their end made for rather heavy leverage.

Slavery was like that in my world, too. Some slaveowners were 'good' but most weren't. Even after laws passed to release slaves, things were still real bad. I've had men tell me I was nothing more than a rat.

So yeah, I don't want nothing to be held over me. If you buy it, I only want to pay you back, nothing more.

There are always those who will want to find others to look down upon, regardless of structure put in place to try and prevent it. Still, at least better people have given some measure of defense.

It will help those who have deluded themselves into thinking they're being magnanimous into reexamining their choices.

I don't need payment. I have energy to starve here and taking care of others is in my nature.

Not my personality, there is a reason I feed on responsibility.
