Mini Event Mingle: Halloween is Coming to Town

Halloween has been officially adopted as a holiday in Ellipsa. So the Summer Guild Leader, Dawn, has arranged a three day party to celebrate it. She has gotten a lot of people involved to make it as fun as possible! They are held at all of the guilds (Frostreign, Blossomcrown, Solarpeak, Amberfall).

All of the guilds are now connected through a mirror path. However, the paths have been made longer with the help of Riki's Rewards, so the journey from Guild A to Guild B isn't instant! Instead people will encounter the spooky corridor, full of silly ways to spook someone such as randomly appearing skeletons and ghosts. Usually these are just fake props or people hiding under a sheet - but occasionally there's an actual skeleton around and taking off his head to cite Shakespeare.

The aesthetics of the corridor change depending on what guilds it connects together. All of them are made to be spooky right now, but originally they were made to work as actual methods of traveling between the guilds, so it's not everything there is. The night skies with a creepy red full moons are just temporary!

At the guilds, all of the natives have dressed up in different costumes and are encouraging people to pick their own costume from the costume room setup. Unfortunately, some very mischievous fairies have gotten into the room undetected and may cast a spell that makes someone act like they're the character the costume represents.

There's also an option to get a random costume if someone feels daring.

Otherwise it's a party filled with different kinds of Halloween appropriate food and drinks. Cookies that look like skeletons, pudding made to look like brains, drinks that look like blood and so on. Even the actual food has somehow been made to look creepy.

By the end of the evening, anyone who hasn't screamed because they were scared will be gifted a special potion called shared bravery. It lets the user to share their bravery with others around them for five hours.

I -- I mean, I did, but that was okay! I didn't go to the really scary ones! I just... kinda... uehhhhh.

What has you so frazzled, then? Take it easy. Do you want to go outside for a bit?

[He doesn't think he's ever seen Rinku so beside herself! Did she go through one of the Mirror Paths? Just what the hell is in there?!]

'Kay... Sorry.

[Mecchan sniffles. Hina, for her part, is completely unfazed, sitting on the table and just eating.

Rinku starts following along with Hijikata and sighs.]

The haunted houses were okay, the Mirror Paths were okay... I just got scared at the food because it looked real for a second. Remember when I told you I made a deal with Davis-san? And we went on a high-risk quest?

Don't apologise... and you, Mecchan, try to keep it together, okay?

[He doesn't want to cry on Halloween!! It may just cost him the Shared Bravery! Listening to Rinku, though, he nods - he remembers her telling him about the dangerous quest.]

Yeah, I recall. Did you guys gut one of those faemoose?

[Mecchan warbles and nods nervously. Rinku gulps.]

Um... more than one. The corrupted fae who sent them found us, or, uh, one of them did. So we had to fight a whole bunch.

So you ended up in moose guts, huh. Did you do it, or your questmate?

[In the latter case, he may just want to have a word with that Mr. Davis! The contracting was already shady enough, but dragging a kid like Rinku into a splatter fest just isn't right!]

Kinda both. [She shuffles her feet.] I really wanted to prove I could be as good as everyone else! And in the moment, I was trying not to think about it... but now I don't really wanna see anything gross for a while.

Rinku-chan...

[He puts a hand on her head to slightly ruffle her hair. She may have turned 18, but that doesn't make her less of a kid in his eyes. She has an innocent heart and no natural malice, and he couldn't possibly put her on the same level as Okita, who is her age but had been itching for slaughter from a much earlier point onwards.]

I tell you, you're enough as you are. You've already gotten so strong and competent. Everybody contributes within their capabilities and comfort zone. Sometimes, it's necessary that we push ourselves out of that zone to grow braver and stronger, but there are limits. You don't need to force yourself to wade through guts and body parts in order to be one of Ellipsa's heroes.

[He means every word. There are otherworlders who rarely, if ever, see the frontlines, such as some of the healers and researchers, but their contributions are just as invaluable as the combatants'.]

[Rinku relaxes a little and looks up at him.]

You think so? It's just I'm trying really hard to get stronger, and so many people are way better and doing more for Ellipsa...

It's not a competition. Any contribution is appreciated, and rest assured, you contribute a lot.

[He's aware of the hypocrisy of his words... didn't his cocky talk about "civilian quests" and his reckless behaviour on combat missions contribute to her feeling like she needs to throw herself into violence? He offers her a wry smile.]

I haven't set a very good example for you, hm?

Ehe. I dunno. Hijikata-san is Hijikata-san! It'd be weird if you were anything else but the way you are, wouldn't it?

I can't be any other way, yeah, but I should've taken greater care in giving credit to everyone else - those who don't go to the frontlines with us.

[He knows that he's not her only mentor(-ish) figure by a long shot, but even so, he got far too used to treating her like a fellow swordsman and only teach her a warriors' perspective!]

Huh... I guess so. ...I know you believe in me, Hijikata-san. But not everybody does sometimes, and I don't wanna be unable to help at all. And I've been working really hard to get stronger. Maybe I still need to learn how to handle it, and maybe it's like what Neechan told me once -- people don't want me to because they never had the choice not to. But... even though healers and airship pilots and politicians and all those other people are contributing too, and they're all doing their best, I don't think I should give up on fighting for Ellipsa.

[Mecchan warbles. At least he's not crying?]

[Hijikata gives Mecchan a little single-fingered headpat too. Fearful as the small Sobble is, he, too, is doing his best! He ponders for a moment before giving Rinku his thoughts.]

There's no telling if we choose the right path in these worlds. You became a brave and capable fighter for Ellipsa - but who knows if you wouldn't have been better at something else, or happier? But I have to say: I think you chose right. After all, you were blessed with summer powers. We can't heal or repair or purify - though we can at least help deal with diseases and curses, and un-rot things. Still, our main abilities are damage-oriented.

[He'd love to ask who it is that doesn't believe in her - he just wants to talk!! -, but she isn't so daft that she wouldn't realise his ire and likely defend those people... and that aside, there's that plausible alternative option:]

I think Evangeline is likely right. There's a good chance that rather than having no faith in your abilities, people just don't want you see all the ugliness of the battlefield. It's your call to stop short of deeds that turn your stomach, or try to harden yourself against them, and know that you're no less courageous if you choose the former. There'll always be people like me who aren't grossed out by anything, and you can still be at our side all the way up to the killing blow.

[Mecchan brightens and gives a little nod! Rinku listens along to Hijikata and hums.]

Yeah... I'm gonna do my best. Thanks, Hijikata-san. I didn't wanna make a mess for you guys. I guess I can think about it. I don't like hurting people, but I know I gotta do that sometimes if they won't stop. It's that kind of thing, right?

You haven't made a mess at all. But it's like Evangeline told you: Most people who are fighters chose that path because they saw no other option - either they had something to protect or avenge, or no other perspective to survive. Hardship hardens people's hearts, to the point where they don't flinch at taking lives anymore.

[He sure is talking a lot, and being more philosophical (or at least serious) than usual... maybe he's really channeling his stern familiar Arashi in his crow tengu get-up.]

Killing a monster is one thing, but could you kill a person if you had to? If you did, how would it affect you? That's what everyone wants to spare you, more than anything else.

[Rinku looks... maybe it's chided, in part, but it's also just sad. She nods again.]

I know... I don't like hurting people. I've always been scared of the day I have to kill someone. But I don't wanna. I wish I could just make them stop without harming them. Sometimes you can.

[He ruffles her hair again. He didn't mean to be a downer!]

That's right - sometimes, you can. And I know that you'll always exhaust all options before causing harm to anyone. As long as you keep your heart the way it is, you don't have to worry.

[He's getting dangerously close to giving her a 'pure heart' magical girl talk, isn't he?]

[Rinku giggles. She hugs Hijikata briefly and steps back, smiling and petting Mecchan on her shoulder.]

I'm gonna try my best. Thanks, Hijikata-san. I didn't mean to screw up or anything.

[Rinku is way too cute... his smile softens.]

You really didn't screw up. So enjoy the party, will you? And if you get hungry, just come to me. I'll make sure your food doesn't look gross.

[How will he do that? By drowning it in mayonnaise, of course. Better don't get hungry, Rinku!]

Okay. [gulp] I'm gonna try! This party's gonna go great. You'll see!
