Mini Event Mingle: Halloween is Coming to Town

Halloween has been officially adopted as a holiday in Ellipsa. So the Summer Guild Leader, Dawn, has arranged a three day party to celebrate it. She has gotten a lot of people involved to make it as fun as possible! They are held at all of the guilds (Frostreign, Blossomcrown, Solarpeak, Amberfall).

All of the guilds are now connected through a mirror path. However, the paths have been made longer with the help of Riki's Rewards, so the journey from Guild A to Guild B isn't instant! Instead people will encounter the spooky corridor, full of silly ways to spook someone such as randomly appearing skeletons and ghosts. Usually these are just fake props or people hiding under a sheet - but occasionally there's an actual skeleton around and taking off his head to cite Shakespeare.

The aesthetics of the corridor change depending on what guilds it connects together. All of them are made to be spooky right now, but originally they were made to work as actual methods of traveling between the guilds, so it's not everything there is. The night skies with a creepy red full moons are just temporary!

At the guilds, all of the natives have dressed up in different costumes and are encouraging people to pick their own costume from the costume room setup. Unfortunately, some very mischievous fairies have gotten into the room undetected and may cast a spell that makes someone act like they're the character the costume represents.

There's also an option to get a random costume if someone feels daring.

Otherwise it's a party filled with different kinds of Halloween appropriate food and drinks. Cookies that look like skeletons, pudding made to look like brains, drinks that look like blood and so on. Even the actual food has somehow been made to look creepy.

By the end of the evening, anyone who hasn't screamed because they were scared will be gifted a special potion called shared bravery. It lets the user to share their bravery with others around them for five hours.

Oh, that would be a result of the brief time where I took her body. My old one had some standing issues, you see. Complications from the side effects of Dragon Slayer magic. She's clever for a child, though. She managed to avoid ego death by enchanting her own personality onto my body the moment I did the same to her. Since my body was the more powerful of the two, she actually managed to oust me from this one and take it back.

[Irene takes a drink of the punch herself, licking the blood red from her lips with a smirk.]

I died soon afterwards. However, a little part of me remains in this body as residual thoughts. As for how I'm here now, well, my favorite outfit did look rather stereotypically "witchy." Someone's been going around enchanting people to act like their costumes, and their chocolate got in my peanut butter.

Damn. Wendy's a resourceful one alright.

[That's a total understatement. For her to no only think on her feet fast enough to respond to magical body theft in kind, but to know that method in the first place, is remarkable! It doesn't seem like Irene holds a grudge against her, either, which Hijikata can appreciate.]

What do you mean, though, about the Dragon Slayer magic's side effects? Is Wendy going to have to deal with those too?

I'm referring to Dragonization. My skin turned to scales, my eyes became reptilian. Eventually, I turned into a dragon entirely. And my husband- a man I married only for political reasons, I assure you- rather hated dragons after the war. I won't bore you with the details, but I escaped imprisonment upon my full transformation and went into isolation for four hundred years.

[Please assume Irene keeps eating the creepy food whenever she has a chance to pause.]

Eventually, I was returned to my human form by none other than the Black Wizard Zeref himself. However, it was an incomplete form. My body was constantly aching,- especially my back, Wendy's so lucky she doesn't have to deal with that- I couldn't taste food and drink, and sleep constantly eluded me. But don't worry for Wendy, her Dragon Seed has been rendered dormant. She will never undergo the same transformation I did.

[Hijikata all but forgets his punch over this story. And here, he thought Wendy went through a lot for a(n ostensibly) young kid like her! Full draconisation - especially while married to a dragon-hating spouse - is a whole other ball game.]

That sounds really nightmarish. I almost can't blame you for trying to steal Wendy's body... but only almost. I guess some random thug wouldn't have met your standards, huh?

[It's fair enough that the Grand Enchanter would want something at least halfway equivalent, but for Wendy's sake, he's glad that it backfired.]

Anyway, I hope that as the creator of Dragon Slayer magic, you're proud of Wendy. She's one of our best assets in saving this world.

I am. The girl is too humble to realize it, but she's already a Grand Enchanter herself. She may not have the raw power of Igneel's child, but her versatility is unmatched. Had I succeeded, I only would have wasted her potential. I'm glad my daughter has someone like her on her side.

[He can't help but smile hearing that. Seeing Wendy's prowess recognised by others makes him happy, even though he can't remotely claim to have mentored her.]

Your daughter? Is she a member of Fairy Tail too, then?

Yes, one of their S-Class wizards even: Erza Scarlet. While she'd likely reject being my daughter, and I certainly have no right to call myself her mother, Erza has proven herself quite well. Fairy Tail raised her better than I ever could have.

Oh, Ezra! Wendy mentioned her. I got the impression that they're friends rather than just guildmates... but if Fairy Tail's anything like my Shinsengumi, that's to be expected.

[The guild seems close-knit overall from the anecdotes Wendy shared with him!]

I'm not a parent, but sometimes, kids thrive best in the most unexpected places, don't they?

[Shoto, who had a harsh upbringing back home, practically worships the ground Hijikata walks on, and while it's overwhelming in its own way, it's given him an idea of what a positive influence found families can be. The same goes for Mukuro, who went from what can only be called a villain back home to a heroine for other worlds at her new friends' side.]

[Irene lets out a bitter laugh.]

Unexpected? Hardly. Fairy Tail was the best possible place she could have ended up. If I had kept her... There wouldn't be an "Erza." Only Irene Belserion's second body. That's why I gave her up to begin with, I didn't trust myself not to do something I would regret. I carried that child in stasis for four centuries simply because I didn't know the consequences of letting her be born to a dragon, I wasn't going to let her be erased by my own hand.

[This woman..! She mystifies Hijikata, being capable of using her own child, yet self-aware enough to give her away into better hands. He downs the rest of his punch.]

I've got to say, you're one hell of a piece of work, lady. I think we can count ourselves lucky that you're only among us on Halloween.

[He knows he's being damn rude, but seriously!! If she were in a position to fully commandeer Wendy's body, who knows what she'd do in a world full of tempting powers?]

Hmhmhm! That's not an uncommon sentiment, the Scarlet Scourge wasn't welcome at many tables on Earthland.

[She... actually looks proud of that.]

Even the other Spriggans under Zeref's command weren't often happy to see me. I was widely regarded as the second most powerful wizard in the world, and I think it intimidated them.

[She really is proud of being feared and loathed!! Granted, on a much smaller scale, Hijikata can kind of relate.]

Second-in-command's a good position to be in, isn't it? But what was you guys' goal, say? Wendy mentioned that they were up against a black dragon... Acnologia, if I remember right. Were you guys allied with him?

[She didn't mention him so far, so chances are they're a different faction altogether... then again, Zeref being the black wizard does seem to fit the picture!]

[Irene's eyes flash with an emotion that looks rather out of place on Wendy's face: hate. She snarls out her response in a way that draws attention to just how sharp Wendy's fangs really are.]

Far from it. That monster turned my magic, meant to be a tool for peace, into a weapon of genocide! Despite its name, Dragon Slayer magic was meant to unite humanity with dragonkind, not destroy them! No, one of our goals was the utter annihilation of the Arcane Dragon Slayer.

[Well, damn. That sure wasn't what he expected, but then again, he's not exactly surprised either. One thing is for sure: Wendy's world has a rich and conflict-laden history.]

Why was it impossible for you to join forces with Fairy Tail, then? I get why you personally wanted to take the opportunity to secure a new vessel, but on the whole, it seems like your organisations had the same goal.

[His best guess is that the guild didn't approve of whatever Zeref had in mind for their nation after Acnologia's defeat.]

Well, we were at war at the time. And I do mean that literally; the entire nation of Alvaraz declared war on the guild Fairy Tail at our king's command. Zeref had two ideal outcomes there: Either he obtained Fairy Heart, and with it enough power to eliminate Acnologia, or someone would finally find a way to kill him.

Wow. How'd they manage to piss everybody off that much?

[He thought the worst the guild did was some hooliganism!]

Well, you know how Fairy Tail never does things by halves. If their enemy is the king of an entire nation, they'll fight the entire nation if they have to. And the Black Wizard Zeref was very much their enemy. Not many knew this, but he was intending to bring about the end of the age of man. Apparently, humankind had quite disappointed him, and he no longer saw fit to let them live.

I love it when one guy decides that humanity doesn't deserve to stay alive. How'd you end up working alongside someone like that when you started out working towards peace between dragons and humans?

Zeref was the one who, even if incompletely, restored me to my true form. I owed him a debt of gratitude. As for humanity, it was humans that betrayed me and left me to rot in my own dungeon alongside my unborn child. At the time, I couldn't have cared less if they all died.

As for Zeref himself, I suppose that's simply the perspective of a powerful immortal. It's entirely possible nostalgia had blinded him to the fact that humanity has always been this way.

[He hums and concedes a nod - that's fair enough, on Irene's part at least, especially when he takes into consideration the immense time spans involved. A few centuries in a dungeon might make just about anyone hate the world.]

Well, it's always the same with us humans: You get the best along with the worst. Where are you going to be when this magic wears off? "Asleep" until the stars align again?

[Since she said that only residual memories remain of her, he doubts that she's always conscious alongside Wendy... but then, what does he know?]

Quite likely, yes. However, Wendy should be aware that these traces of my being exist within her. If she ever decides she needs my power enough to enhance these residual thoughts, I would become conscious full time. Not nearly enough to have any control, but enough to become a voice whispering in her ear.

As if she weren't badass enough already! But no, seriously, that's good. She is still a kid, despite everything.

[He grabs a finger-looking treat to snack on as they talk - seeing Irene sample the buffet has brought back his appetite, now that the initial surprise has well worn off.]

I've got to say, Dragon Slayer magic is still hard to grasp for me even though Wendy told me a lot about it. I thought it required a bond between a human and a dragon, but if you created it on your own, that assumption's probably off-base.

When did I ever say I created it on my own? If I'm the mother of Dragon Slayer magic, the Sage Dragon Belserion was the father. It was only through our combined efforts that Dragon Slayer magic was born. My kingdom's citizenry actually included dragons of the coexistence faction before the events of the civil war soured relations, to the point that I was even known as the Queen of Dragons.

[She did call herself the mother of Dragon Slayer magic - in hindsight, he should've taken that more literally!]

Now that sounds like what Wendy told me! Are you actually aware of everything that's been going on here? Because if not, you're going to love hearing about this.

[He and Wendy personally worked their asses off to help along the local human(oid)-dragon relations!]

I do have some awareness of what Wendy's been doing, yes. If things had gone so well four hundred years ago, perhaps dragonkind would still exist in Earthland. Or perhaps not, I still don't truly know what Acnologia's motivation for exterminating dragonkind was. Things are only muddled by the fact that he was already going by that name as a human. Acnologia is a dragon name.
