Heard 'em squeaking in a grotty old box under a park bench. [ Squeaking like their little lives depended on it. Which, in fairness, is probably true. She grumbles faintly, an ear flicking back. ] It's a touch frosty out and they're, ugh, they're stupidly small, Mac. [ Pinches her fingers together in (exaggerated) demonstration. ] So I figured I'd best get them safe and warm. Might go take another looksee for mum-cat later.

[ He continues to pick Only The Best Apples and makes a stack in front of her. ] You're welcome, my dear. Whatever you don't eat now I'll stash in our room. [ There's a pile of emergency fruit somewhere cool. ]

Yes, they are excellent at squeaking. [ It'd hurt a little if they were any bigger. ] I'm sure they're feeling much better now that they're nestled in your hair. Wash is going to be thrilled and give them all schmoopy names, I might as well get started on shadow blankets for them all now that I've finally finished yours.

You'd think. I'm not entirely sure why someone wants a pet if they're always out of the house. Like they just want something they can pet sometimes.

So the mom could be anywhere. But the mom could also be very upset about her babies missing, but tracking a cat is a lot harder than humans.
