Event #8: Fairytale Gone Live

Fairytale Gone Live
LOGS | NETWORK | OOC | MEMES | NAVIGATION
Fairies have managed to uncover something in the Amberfall Library. Powerful magic had kept it covered, but with the help of their queen they managed to reveal what was hidden: an entrance to an ancient library. No one has recollection of a library being hidden there, but the fairies claim it feels 'familiar'. They started exploring the library in earnest and identified it as the Magical Library of Knowledge. As it's a magical library, it's completely possible that it teleported itself into safety when Darkness came and found its way here.
This ancient library is known to be good willed in nature. However, it does have some quirks and sometimes pulls pranks on unsuspecting visitors. Fairies are immune to such things, but there's a reason for it: fairies aren't able to pick up the books in the library, not even with their magic. Only those with the ability to touch the books will be affected by the magics that happen in the library.
The books contain important information about the world that has been lost, so a request has been sent to otherworlders to make a trip to the library and find important seeming information. Everyone who volunteers will be given a bag that helps carry any books (will keep the books safe and the bag remains light no matter how many books it has inside - only works on books) and an amulet that has a one-time magic that will teleport someone to safety if necessary.
Of course anyone is also welcome to just bring back books that interest them personally. The bag does have limitless space, after all. It was developed for people who want to loan a lot of books at the same time - good thing the invention will now have other uses!
After descending down a long spiral staircase, people will find a huge library that has more books than eyes can see. They're all on shelves, at least, instead of being scattered around. There are various sections and all of them have been put in an alphabetical order by the book's name, as most of them lack the name of an author. The place has three floors, all with various staircases leading up and down.
The ambience in the library is dark, making reading there seem a little bit unpleasant. However, anytime someone opens a book, a small lantern will float above them, making the surrounding perfect for reading a book without disturbing anyone nearby. Once the book closes, the lantern will float away to find someone else to help.
Floating lanterns aren't the only things moving around the library. Occasionally one may notice movement from the corner of their eye and if they turn around they might see an owl sitting on top of a clothes rack or a table. These are library owls - intelligent owls that oversee the library and just live there because they enjoy being there. If someone offers them a snack, they will perch on the person's arm or shoulder.
Even if the library seems extremely organized, the sad truth is that all of the important knowledge containing books have been hidden among normal books. But the library owls will know where the look, as long as someone is nice to them and will give them snacks. Those who are mean to the owls will be guided towards useless places - like the section filled with just empty books or one that has magical traps.
Some of the sections of the library behave differently than others. There are odd magical effects (like making someone act like they're in love when reading a romance book) or traps that have been made to surprise people (mostly harmless 'chalk dropping from above' or 'water sprouting from a fake flower' type of traps). Some sections even have guardian books that are floating books that will push people out of the section if they're being loud or otherwise disturb others. Attacking one of them will make the books reflect the attack back to the person.
Some of the rooms containing books take being magical to another level. Whoever opens a book will change the whole look of the room. All of the shelves and the surrounding area is replaced with a scenery from the book. If two or more books are opened at the same time, the scenery will be a mix of all of the opened books. Fortunately, none of it is actually real so if someone happens to open an informative books on sharks, they will just get a very realistic illusion of being in an ocean with sharks.
Sometimes these sceneries will also change the clothes of the people to fit the book characters' clothes. Wearing these clothes might make the people talk like the characters do in the books (in accents or elven languages) or act out a dramatic death scene in the middle of the room. Usually this passes after the scene is played out or once the book in question is found and closed.
Another weird phenomena happens in the aisles that have books on fairytales. Anyone who opens a book in one of these aisles might find themselves become a fairytale character. The change is visual at least, but some might even go through a complete change. In other words, someone could just look like the Prince from Snow White, but another might even believe they are him. Someone who starts off as just looking like a character might later end up acting like them as well, but not the other way around.
The longer someone 'stays in the fairytale' the more likely it is they will be taken over by the character they've become. It will be harder and harder for them to remember their real name or react to someone calling them by it. They will share the goals of the fairytale character and think they're in a strange trials set up by someone that they need to get out of.
A way to break free of a fairytale is to either receive a kiss (preferably of true love, but just a normal kiss will do) or by having a key item destroyed. The key item will depend on the fairytale character in question (so for a princess it might be a crown or for a fairy godmother it might be their wand). Destroying the book that started it all isn't possible, as the book is 'inside the person' until they snap out of the fairytale.
CW/TW: horror, gore, paranoia, murder (attempts)
In the lowest floor of the library exists the horror sections. These aisles are full of different thriller and horror books. Unfortunately, upon escaping the darkness this particular section was partially corrupted. For that reason there's a high change of running into danger here.
The further in you go to these sections, the creepier the ambience becomes. Is that blood on the floor? Is that floating lantern flickering ominously? Some may even start seeing things that aren't even there or just generally feel paranoid.
If someone happens to open a book under these circumstances, they might summon a shadow of a killer from the stories who will attempt to murder the reader to break free. Some might become possessed by character from the books and do their bidding. The fastest way to break any of these is to destroy the book. This is the only time that doing so is encouraged. Other ways include destroying or capturing the shadow or knocking out the person possessed.
Perhaps the safest option is to just open a book and witness a gory scene being laid out on the ground beneath them, just like described in the books. It's not pleasant, but it won't hurt anyone. The scene will disappear once the book is put away.
Destroying books here also helps deal with the partial corruption, as it will slowly disappear and the aisles start feeling a little bit more "normal".
To those not keen on diving into a strange library, there are other things to do. Of course, anyone who went to the library can later also join the events happening in the city.
A public announcement is made that the next big mission would happen in the Winter Segment. More specifically, the Research Center and the four Power Holders are making preparations to tackle the mystery of the Frozen Falls. With the new information gathered from exploring, it's now a known fact that the storm preventing their access is actually the souls of the previous power holders keeping anyone from entering the place. However, with the right preparations, gaining access to and exploring the falls will be made possible.
The first set of preparations happen in the Frostreign District. Anyone is welcome to join the project in one of the big houses near the Sauna Spa area. The place is filled with materials for making winter gear for the mission. There's almost every imaginable colored fabrics, different accessories and even yarn for those who'd rather knit. The main goal is to make gear for themselves, but any extra is also appreciated.
Those who don't feel so confident in making gear can also choose from pre-made ones and edit them with the enhancements needed to keep the cold away. Even the most basic summer clothes can be made to be perfect for the cold weather, as long as the enhancements are made right. People are at least encouraged to enchant any metallic parts of their weapons (or even jewelry!) to prevent them from becoming too cold to handle.
Participants are taught a spell that will let them enhance the gear or clothes of their choosing into ones that resist cold. This spell needs to be chanted in a freezing temperature, which is why the event is held in Frostreign. Once the enchanted item starts glowing in an a warm, orange color, the spell has worked.
The spell has to include 'With the warmth I draw from' and 'I protect this', but otherwise it's up to the person how the spell goes. Popular phrases are 'from within' or 'from the earth'. Saying the spell wrong, such as 'With fire I protect this' will result in a burning item instead. It won't damage the item, but it will be impossible to use unless the fire is put out.
Frostreign also offers other ways to prepare for the coming mission. A challenge has been posted on the billboard outside the Sauna Spa area; The Ice Hole Swim Challenge. The goal is to first go into the sauna and then walk through the snow in just their swimwear to the ice hole at the center of the district and dip in. Those brave enough to enter the water will get a reward. After the swim everyone is encouraged to run back into the sauna to warm up.
Another challenge is starting to heat up in the sauna, which isn't really related to withstanding the cold. Some Sauna Fanatics are challenging people to stay in the sauna as long as possible while the heat rises higher. Those who manage to stay inside the longest and in the highest temperature will get a reward! However, those who cheat using seasonal powers will be subjected to the ice bucket challenge, which is basically having a bucket full of ice water dumped on them.
One of the more traditional challenges is the snowball fight where the goal is to hit as many people as possible with a snowball. Those who manage to hit at least ten other players will receive a rewards. Those who don't manage to hit anyone at all will received a star that said 'You tried' with a sad snowflake drawn on it.
The fourth and final challenge is a speed contest that's run on a rink made of ice. No one is allowed to use skates; just normal shoes (or no shoes at all if they prefer). There are multiple races and multiple winners in this contest - as well as a lot of medicine for the pain caused by falls.
But what are all these rewards that someone can earn? It's a choice between various things: one free item from Riki's Rewards (max. 30 comments price), a set of five different gift cards for five different restaurants (of characters' choice), a collection of useful potions (one that fixes any status effect, one that creates a substitute to take damage for the user, a five hour invisibility potion and a potion to revive someone from a fatal hit) or a giant teddy bear that feels like hugging someone the person loves. All rewards can be taken once, but someone can do multiple challenges to get more than one reward.
Just participating in any of the ongoing challenges will get someone a five star gourmet meal in the Frostreign's famous Northern Cuisine Restaurant*. Currently staying in the Sauna Spa hotel rooms is also free for the duration of the events.
* As long as the food is from "somewhere north", like even 'northern part of country in the south', it's likely a dish can be found in this restaurant.
• Ask event related questions here.
• In this event, gathering information is the main goal. If you wish to participate, please see this comment for OOC mechanics. The more people participate, the better! All requests are OOCly open until June 9th, 23:59 PST!
• Information gathered may not match the section explored.
• Feel free to come up with new fairytales, use existing ones (with changes, if a character of that fairytale exists in the game) or even use mythologies as fairytale stories. Have fun!
• Any types of books can be found from the library, even those that come from characters' worlds, as long as they're not straight up a manga or diary of someone's life from home. Feel free to come up with the weirdest cookbooks or a "X thing for Dummies".
• Smut is not allowed on the event post, so if your thread is heading that way, please move it to a separate entry (like to your musebox or characters' journal).
• Remember to content and spoiler warn as necessary!
• Reminder to players that this month is Activity Check-in month and check-in ends on May 31st, at 23:59 PST.
Toshirou Hijikata | Gintama (Prismatica & Isle of Avalon CRAU) | Summer
[What are the chances of a lost magical library full of forgotten knowledge reappearing out of the blue? Hijikata could use a diversion from the self-doubt spiral kicked off by his last-place tournament loss and subsequent potentially 32st birthday around the turn of the month, so he joins the research expedition despite the lack of combat action to be expected.
Once onsite, he briskly walks through the aisles, somewhat torn between prioritising the mission and selfishly keeping an eye out for some rejuvenation spells. Clearly, he is getting old if Jean could kick his ass like that - not that Jean isn't a skilled power holder in his own right, but combined with the fatal birthday milestone, the defeat at another regular human's hands was just too much of a kicker for Hijikata to handle.
Just as he reaches out to pull a potion book from the shelf, he notices something from the corner of his eye... and when he turns, it's an owl, sitting on the backrest of a library chair and staring at him with yellow eyes.]
What the hell? Why're there birds in here? They must've been shitting all over the place. Shoo!
2) Immersed in Books
[After angering the library owls and getting swarmed by guardian books after drawing his sword on another book for putting his cigarette out with a torrent of water to the face, Hijikata needs a moment to recollect himself in the fairy tale section, where he flips through a little old book with a pissy expression.
Not much later, those who encounter him will find him far less aggravated, albeit still seeming somewhat worried. Wearing vaguely old-timey western-style clothes, he carefully leaves a trail of mayonnaise droplets from his bottle as he makes his way through the library. Maybe you've already stepped into it! But if anyone confronts him about the mess, he simply explains:]
It's so we all can find the way back out. Also, my sister may find her way back to me like that.
[Since when does he have a sister?!
(OOC: Feel free to encounter him in the horror section, too... it not like he's paying a lot of attention to where he's going while looking for his Gretel!)]
3) The Cold Case
[With the first round of library investigations concluded, Hijikata joins the ongoing Winter Segment expedition preparations. At this rate, he isn't even shocked at the revelation about the eternal blizzard anymore. After all, have the old power holders caused anything but trouble for this world? If the weird creepypasta-like information he found in the library is to be believed, they're even more directly responsible for the Darkness than previously assumed!
While he does spend some time enhancing his gear and his newer swords that haven't had so many enhancements yet, he soon gets attracted by the enticing contests that are happening in Frostreign. Given the tournament disaster, he really shouldn't risk another crushing defeat, but he knows that he's tough enough to stand a long time in the sauna (never mind that the last time, he got so delirious that he tried to smoke the wooden water-pouring ladle)! Anyone else entering the challenge will find him looking quite confident despite the overpowering damp heat.]
This is barely enough to make me break a sweat! We need more steam in here!
[(OOC: He'll also be available for the ice hole swim challenge, snowball fight, or ice rink speed challenge - just ignore the above and write a starter for one of those if you prefer!)]
[(OOC: If you'd like to hash anything out, you can find my plotting comment here!)]
2) i need you to imagine levi pretending to be antonio banderas pretending to be a cat for this
[ The boot is way longer than the ones he normally wears, for one. Or maybe he's just a foot shorter? He's also dressed kind of like he's cosplaying D'Artagnan, with a big feathered hat and a rapier at his side and everything. ]
[ Oh, and there are definitely cat ears peeking out from under said hat, segueing off into soft black fur where his human ears used to be, blending seamlessly into his undercut. ]
Your sister? [ There's doubt in his voice, before he seems to perk up, his pupils narrowing into excited slits. ] A damsel in need of rescuing, perhaps?
[ No. Wait. What the fuck was that. He shakes his head and points at the mayo bottle. ]
Oi. Stop pouring that shit everywhere.
I'll do my best! 🐈⬛
catboy'scatman's demand.]Sorry, no can do. This place is a labyrinth; we'll never find out without a trail. And my sister is no damsel... but I can't deny that I'm a little worried.
...
Then again, maybe she grew up too.
[He was just a little boy before he found himself dumped in this strange library! Being an adult certainly helps matters.]
🐈⬛🐈⬛🐈⬛
crumbsfood is not how one is supposed to handle labyrinths at all. ]Then there is most likely a terrifying creature waiting to be slain in the middle! [ His bright eyes narrow slightly as he taps his chin in thought. ] How much do you think the townspeople would pay us for getting rid of it?
[ He startles, as if just realizing something. ]
It probably has your sister!
[ HE'S MAKING IT WORSE! ]
no subject
...
I don't care about money.
[Well, he kind of does - if his parents had money, they wouldn't have abandoned him and his sister in the forest. He's honestly still not over that at all; it hurts a lot. But right now, none of that matters, not when this catman says that there's a monster that has her in its clutches!]
How do we get to the centre? You can find the townspeople first if you want to, but I'll go ahead. I'll leave a trail for you, too.
[It would be nice to have backup, especially since this man seems to be a subject matter expert when it comes to monsters, but he can't afford to wait for him while he settles the financial matters!]
no subject
[ Never mind that Hijikata isn't a bounty hunter! ]
No matter! [ He adjusts his hat with determination. ] If they do not wish to pay, we'll just have to steal their hearts.
[ He sounds like a decision has been made already, and so he gestures forward with his rapier... or where he thinks forward is. It's a maze. He's just a cat. ]
Save it, kid. A journey lies ahead of us; we may need it for sustenance.
no subject
I'm not a bounty hunter. I'm...
[He's just a boy (man, now, all of a sudden) who spent his days helping his father chop wood, set traps, shoot pheasants, and everything else that needed to be done to survive in the woods.]
What's it like to be a bounty hunter?
[Little do they know that they're about to head into a section of the library where someone is engrossed in a book about the Forever Falls, so they'll pass a realistic illusion of enormous waterfalls thundering down an endless abyss - and there may just be some explodies hanging around for good measure! They're not real, but they sure look the part, like horrible flaming balls with gaping maws.]
no subject
[ Levi leads the way, his too-large boots stomping down the pathway with determination. There are always monsters in labyrinths, so he won't be particularly surprised by that, but he definitely does not appreciate the too-realistic Forever Falls tour; he eyes the cascading water with suspicion and puffs up with a hiss when some of it sprays him. ]
...you hunt bounties.
[ Oh. Guess he didn't inherit the actual Puss' penchant for telling captivating stories after all. ]
Watch out for the balls-
no subject
Are these bounties?
[Wait a second--]
What if one of them ate my sister?! Mister, you've got to take them down!
[He's not fazed by the spraying water, and he tugs Levi's sleeve to stop him. The explodies, meanwhile, don't attack, merely hovering overhead - they're only magical illustrations.]
no subject
Anything can be a bounty.
[ The key is whether anybody is paying for it! Which, as far as he knows, nobody has requested the slaying of these little things, but it appears that this young lad's sister may have been taken by them. Not on his watch, evildoers! ]
Fear not, adventurer! With me on your side we shall triumph.
[ Unfortunately, once Puss tries to stab the explodies with his rapier, nothing happens. Or rather, the blade swipes right through them, as if they're nothing more but mist in the air. After a few attempts, Levi frowns and tries poking one. Nothing. ]
...I'm afraid your sister is at the hands of an evil sorcerer. He sent these illusions to distract us!
no subject
Have you bounty-hunted a sorcerer before? It has to be difficult, right?
[As they leave the Forever Falls behind, they only have a short aisle of books to cover before they find themselves in... the Creature-Nip Meadow? Given the various effects of the shrubs and herbs, it certainly is a good thing that it's only an illusion! In the far distance, some bamboo warriors can be spotted at the edge of neighbouring Bamboo Labyrinth.]
no subject
[ He doesn't like the rapid scenery changes... and especially the fact that there's no sorcerer's castle in view! Maybe he hid it with magic, as well. Levi considers what may be the best place to hide such a thing and decides that the middle of a labyrinth is probably a solid pick, and so he starts off toward the bamboo warriors. ]
no subject
...
I think the sorcerer keeps changing the landscape to confuse us.
[Part of him can't help but feel excited nonetheless. He's never seen sights like these before!]

1. so late, but here.
He's always been a fan of birds. So he spends a little time checking out the books, hopping through the place (using some wind to lift him to higher shelves), and feeding a random owl here or there a piece of the dried eat. ]
It's really pretty clean in here. And they're very polite if you're nice to them.
♡
Is that so..? Well, they'd better be if you're feeding them.
[Has he just been petting the birds rather than researching things, though? Time to inquire as if he were in charge!]
Were you able to uncover any relevant information yet?
no subject
Not yet, but I'm sure I will.
[ Sure, he's sort of read some books, mostly just glanced. But he has time and he'll find something useful. Or at least interesting for himself. So the other's thought that he might just be petting birds isn't really far off. ]
I've just enjoyed the way this place feels to be.
[ The smell of books, the owls, the quiet and cozy feeling he has being here. He doesn't get to go to places like this often. ]
no subject
It is an interesting place, isn't it? I wonder how long it's been here undetected. The fairies say that it moved itself here to escape the Darkness, so probably ever since.
[Unless magical libraries like to location-hop ever so often. He watches another owl silently glide in, land on the other chair's backrest, and stare at Venti in hopes of also being fed.]
If nothing else, there's a lot of information about how the world used to be before. I saw a map on the wall on the wall on the way to this section... it really drove home how small the world has gotten.
no subject
[ Or at least he can assume. After all, couldn't it just go back to being undetected if that's what it really wanted? He hopes. The owl is right to assume it will get a treat from Venti, though. He lifts a hand up to gently move his fingers over it's head as he uses his other to feed it a piece of dry meat. ]
I'll have to look. I wonder how much time has passed between then and now. Maybe a map has a date. Not right now, though. I mean, there's an owl friend who wants snacks.
[ Of course. ]
no subject
Even if we did manage to push the Darkness back, I'm apprehensive. I know that we assume that in the metaverse the area currently shrouded in it appeared barren, but what if the land has really been irreversibly corrupted?
[Then again, there are purification magics, and spring power holders can bring dead plants back to life, can't they? Hijikata steps up next to Venti to also stroke an owl's head, but it leans away. He stinks of smoke!]
no subject
That's a pretty gloomy way to think. But, if it can't be fixed, I expect we'll know in no time.
[ And he's trying not to think in a gloom-and-doom way. ]
Or we'd know by now, maybe. I don't know. Depends on how long you've been here.
no subject
[Just like Venti... but he doesn't seem to remember him, does he? Hijikata's starting to wonder if this is indeed one of those scenarios where someone disappears only to be pulled in again from a completely different timeline.]
How long has it been for you, again?
no subject
[ Which, judging by the slight surprise on his face, is news to him. He looks to think for a moment before he answers the question for himself. ]
Just a few months. Like...three, I think. I think within a year you should know, at least. It would be weird if you didn't.
[ Hm... ]
Have they not sad anything?
no subject
What we do know is that the Darkness corrupts everything it touches - plants, animals, people. I feel like it's hope more than anything else that keeps everyone working to push it back.
[He watches the owls huddle up contentedly, having been fed to their satisfaction.]
You're right, though; we'll find out once we cross that bridge. Have you gone out there at all in your time here?
no subject
[ He likes to do things at his own pace. He doesn't really see a reason to rush out quite yet. He'd go with someone, probably, if they wanted to go. ]
Eventually, but I prefer not to do anything too dangerous until I'm better acquainted with this place.
[ A lie. ]
And I'd prefer to have a companion.
no subject
Well, if something ever draws you out there and you need an escort, feel free to call on me.
[He pats the multiple swords at his hip (yes, this is a library, but he's seen some shit; you never know what might happen!). Come to think, this Venti doesn't even know his name yet!]
Toshirou Hijikata. I can give you my contact details - unless you're already sorted out.
[It's not like they don't have a bunch of capable people from Teyvat here, and even outside of that, a sociable person like Venti probably already has his bases covered!]
