Extra info: Those who are still interested in getting a monster form from the Mall can still get one, as said in this mod announcement. So if you wish to play around with a monster form triggered by the full moon, you totally can! It doesn't even need to be a permanent one!

Mm, no, I haven't asked for one.

[That does not mean he has not been offered a partner to work with, but Edmond can be prickly even to people he knows and the first couple of unfortunate souls who tried to work with him quickly realised that he was not the easiest man to get along with.

By now he doesn't really notice it, and the kind of work he sets himself to usually goes better when there aren't multiple people making it obvious that they're law enforcement.]

I manage well enough alone. The people in the area I work have started to trust me. Having someone new come in could jeopardise that.

[Huh... a lone wolf, is he? But maybe it's a good thing. It's not like Hijikata doesn't already have enough on his plate to keep him busy.]

That's fair enough.

[Hinobuta, bored of the humans just talking, run off to rummage around under the snow.]

Do you have a pokémon too?

A what?

[Edmond is not up and running on all the things that have happened here and 'pokémon' is a completely foreign word to him. His attention briefly follows Hinobuta as the creature wanders off to start messing around in the snow but quickly comes back up to Hijikata.]

Something like your companion here? No, I don't have anything like that.

[It looks like a handful...]

I've never really had pets.

I didn't either, back home.

[He had his first pets on Avalon, and... well, he could have been a better pet owner instead of just letting his little dinosaurs run rampant in the forest. With Hinobuta, though, things have been different!]

Pokémon are pretty smart and perceptive, that makes them great companions. In time, Hinobuta will even be able to help me with the more dangerous quests! He's already been a huge asset on the mundane ones.

I can see how he might be with the abilities he has. They're natural to him, then?

[Now his curiosity has been piqued and he no longer sees any potential threat or danger Edmond does relax a little, though his manner is still somewhat stiff. It's part a noble upbringing, part social awkwardness, and part a life-long dedication to duty and order.

He's getting better. It isn't so long ago that Hijikata would have had the man giving him a thorough dressing down rather than a few comments about safety.]

[If Edmond has castigated Hijikata, a fight would have been almost inevitable, given the latter's temperament and sense to authority over others - thankfully, things went well!]

Yeah. Pokémon come with different elemental powers, and they learn new abilities with time and practice, just like we do.

[He sends a fireball over to the Pignite, and it meets it with one of its own to push it back. Hijikata turns the missile harmless and green, letting it hover in mid-air before dismissing it.]

Do you live around here? Or are you just assigned to this area?

[He always has a hard time imagining people voluntarily moving into the cold districts!]

[He shakes his head slightly.]

I live in Amberfall.

[This place is definitely too cold for him to live here on a permanent basis, but he does occasionally get out here for work. Though, truth be told, this is not actually one of those times.]

I'm only here to look around - I'm usually assigned to the city centre. However, I don't want to slack on my knowledge of the surrounding areas just because I don't get to them often.

[Hijikata nods idly. Edmond has the right idea - they need to be at least roughly familiar with the entire territory under their protection -, but he's come to find Frostreign a rather quiet place indeed.]

I'll be honest with you, the only hot spots worth coming out here for - unless you're looking for fireproof training grounds - are the pub and the sauna spa.

[The Pignite, apparently having run around enough to get its excess energy out of its system, returns to the men's side, giving Edmond another sniff and an expectant look.]

Come on, Hinobuta, give it a rest. Hasn't he given you enough attention? You're tired, aren't you? Let me put you back in your pokéball.

[He's about ready to head home. Training in the snow tires him out a lot faster than his regular practice! He wouldn't mind Edmond coming along to the city centre, where they'd have to split up to continue on to their respective home district.]

[Edmond doesn't seem to mind that the creature wants more of his attention, so he crouches down again to lightly pat Hinobuta on the head. He could argue with Hijikata about what he says - somewhere so quiet as this would be a perfect place to set up an operation, where no one would be expected to look - but really... it's cold, and he's not planning to stay out here much longer, and as argumentative as he can be he doesn't want to argue about everything.]

You're heading back, then?

[He scratches his fingertips against the top of Hinobuta's head, not realising that he's idly smiling as he does.]

I thought I may do the same. My housemate is going to start to wonder where I am soon in any case.

[The Pignite gives Edmond another happy oink as it leans in to his touch. Hijikata registers his remark about his housemate with some quiet satisfaction. Even if Edmond works alone, it looks like he's not a completely solitary person, and Hijikata, who spent his adolescence alone, generally thinks that having some company is better for people.]

Let's take the airbus or teleport node together. You're also going through the city centre, right?

[He does put Hinobuta in the pokéball so it doesn't end up falling asleep on the journey. While still young, it's a lot heavier to carry than it was as a Tepig!]

[For Edmond, being solitary has not been a choice that he has made but rather something of a necessity, or so he would say if asked about why it was so. Hijikata is right though - he's not someone who will continue to push away offered company and he accepts the other man's quite gracefully.]

[He makes a small gesture for Hijikata to lead the way.]

That's where being a summer power holder comes in handy! We can keep ourselves warm.

[He's just going to assume that Edmond isn't one, otherwise he probably wouldn't have said that.]

[He's really come a long way from how fussy and skittish he used to be! Nowadays leaning against even a near-stranger on the airbus for touch energy or temperature regulation doesn't feel like a big deal anymore - not that he'll do it without Edmond's express agreement.]

[Aside from not really wanting to touch a stranger if he doesn't have to... Edmond lifts up a hand and briefly summons a small flicker of fire. It goes out as soon as it appears, but it makes his point well enough.]

I'm summer as well. But I don't intend to set my boots on fire to keep my feet warm.

[And that, he would hope, implies that he's not going to get closer to Hijikata right now either. It's not personal, he's just not big on touching people he doesn't know.]

Well, colour me surprised. You didn't strike me as a summer power holder.

[He was also surprised to learn that Ayato was aligned with autumn rather than winter... is he just prejudiced again people with blue hair? Or is it because of their cool attitude?]

Hm?

[He can't help but shoot Hijikata an arched brow at that, the first sign of any real emotion other than cool detachment or a sense of authority.]

What makes you say that?

You just don't give off a sense of summer. We're said to be temperamental, aren't we? But I should wait until I see you in action before I form an opinion on that!

[He gives him a small grin.]

Besides, you're not exactly seeing my fiercest side either. How about we go on a quest together one of these days?

[He's always looking for more quest partners, and going with a fellow policeman should be interesting!]

Mm, it's never a good idea to form an opinion about someone when you've only known them for ten minutes.

[Edmond being a prime example of someone who has done this many times in the past and often to his detriment. He can be a very emotional and temperamental person when he gets going.

The offer draws his attention though, and he glances the other man's way.]

I don't see why not. It never hurts to have someone capable along on those ventures.

[Hijikata could shake Edmond's hand over being a master at making snap judgements about others, but for all he's concerned, he has his priorities in order where it really matters!]

[He'll happily spell that out for him, too! That aside, his eyes light up when he spots a transportation option he hadn't considered ahead of them: One of those strange green pipes that appeared out of nowhere a few months ago. If this one leads to the city centre, it'll be as good as a teleport node!]

[He does write the network ID down, making a small quizzical face at it before he pushes his device back into his pocket, and his attention goes to the green pipe at much the same time that his companion's does.

Though, he is not quite so eager to venture into it.]

Do you step into every stray portal and pipe that you cross paths with?

[The last time he stepped into a random pipe he ended up fighting several small, very aggressive reptiles.]

I sure did when they first cropped up and we had to investigate and label them! But this one should already-- ah!

[The signpost is on the other side of the pipe, and it signals that it leads to Amberfall (~~the RNG likes Edmond!~~), which makes Hijikata grin again.]

I'd say this one's worth stepping into, wouldn't you say? If your home's in the direction of Sunwaning from wherever it spits us out, I'll walk you home.

[Edmond makes a face, but he supposes anything would be closer to home than where he is right now. He frowns for a moment then shakes his head, approaching the pipe alongside Hijikata.]

Very well, but there's really no need to accompany me home.

I haven't taken this pipe before!

[And whoever labeled it just wrote down "Amberfall" without a street name or anything, so who knows where exactly it's going to dump them?]

And sure, suit yourself. Far be it from me to foist my company on anyone.

[He usually isn't this cheeky... something about Edmond's stuffiness brings out the shithead in him. You'd think he'd refrain, given how usually he is the victim of other people's bullshit, but apparently not!

When they enter the pipe, they experience the usual weird travel sensation before exiting on the other end (luckily, the pipe ends on street level rather than randomly jutting out of a tower or what-have-you). Hijikata takes a moment to orient himself.]

Ah! That's the library building over there. I hope you don't have too far to go from here?

[It does occur to him when they 'land' at the other end of the pipe that that little trip really could have gone horribly wrong. Luckily it did not, they are both still in one piece and not falling from a terrible height...

Edmond clears his throat and brushes himself off to hide the buzzing of his nerves.]

Ah... Around half an hour from here.

[Still closer than he was? Maybe he can find some public transport that's going that way... But then again...]

The walk will do me good.

[If he really doesn't want to be escorted..! (Back home, Hijikata really will have to ask himself what made him want to poke and prod Edmond so badly. After all, it's not like he needs an escort either, and they're both policemen!) He gives him a casual little salute.]

[Will he, though, given how they managed to not cross paths until now, clearly assigned different duties at a time? But then again he did leave him his network ID! If Edmond ever does want to quest with a fellow summer power holder, Hijikata will be ready.]
