What the hell is that look even about? Almost an accusation. Please, if Eren was going to lie, he would be better at it, right? Though Reiner probably has no idea that Eren is any good at lying, certainly not on the unimaginable scope that he does it. He hasn't even outright lied to Reiner since he got here. Well. He hasn't outright lied to anyone other than saying he's fine when he isn't, which doesn't really count. The other stuff, the stuff he hides or only says half of…that's trickier. He just does that to everyone, even people he doesn't know. He can't seem to stop doing that.
But something else happens, Reiner's expression changing. Eren can't get a read on him.
Of course he knows Reiner is absolutely nuts. Not that he can judge; he's self-aware enough to know he's not the same as he used to be, even though he wouldn't put words like madness on himself. He saw what Reiner was like (will be like?) later, longing for death, hollowed out, taller but thinner. He saw Reiner flip flop between things he knew about himself. Is that what this is?
Well, whatever. It isn't that Eren doesn't care, it's just that he's focused on doing this right now because he's mad that he fell in the water so fast. And he's mad that it was strange and he ended up with gross saltwater in his mouth. He's just mad at himself, but that doesn't mean he can't take it out on Reiner in this competition. It's not a real fight and he's not even that mad, at least.
He's a little angrier at that life jacket comment, though, because it feels like a dig and he's already stinging with embarrassment.
"Shut the fuck up and let's go," he says from behind clenched teeth. But this time he doesn't charge in right away. Whatever that thing Reiner did, the move that Eren had no idea about, he's not going to fall for it again (maybe). He tells himself he'll let Reiner make the first move, but then he's always been pretty easy to goad into flying off the handle once he's angry or embarrassed. Could go either way.
