Any chance you could make it to a birthday party sometime this week?

[ When you actually show up to the park near Flynn's one-bedroom apartment, you'll know where the party is right away: chains of wildflowers string trees together around the clearing, and there's a big buffet table covered with lots of (clearly labeled for different dietary needs) food. The recipes definitely lean Japanese, and most of it's handmade, but there's also a selection of storebought snacks still in their wrappers for some reason. ]

[ Just. Kind of speechless for a long moment. Then rapid blinking. Then — giving Flynn's hand a slightly uncertain squeeze. ]

S'pposed to be a nice place. Peaceful.

[ ...He's not. Fully sure he's let himself think it might actually happen before this moment? He'd miss the Lower Quarter a lot.

But he really does like traveling. Seeing new places. If Red comes along, they could even go back to Terca Lumireis, if they really got too homesick. And—

[Flynn smiles at him, and just squeezes his hand again.]

[ ...Okay. Digging the rings out of his pocket again. ]

I thought I was doing the — romantic gestures today. Told Venti I wanted to stick to a regular date night with each of you. Something... to make clear things were different. Put a capital-P on my 'Partners', maybe.

[ ...They look so small in the palm of his hand. Delicate. ]

Doesn't get much more capital-P than this, I guess.

I like the idea of dates. I spoke to Ms. Niwa and she gave me some suggestions on places to go.

[Yup. He's happy to do the date thing with him.]

But you're right, it doesn't.

[He softens at the sight of the rings.]

[ A tiny bit of additional fluster at the idea of you seeking outside advice on dating him. But it's not — the bad kind of fluster. ]

So — you want the dark one and I'm supposed to wear the light one, huh? ...Zari made us a blanket with moons and suns on it, too. Feels like I missed a memo.

[ Slipping the chain over his head. ]

[He pauses and thinks.]

Ms. Yoimiya Niwa.

I asked her what her favorite places to visit would be and I think she gave some solid places to go, so I think I'd like to go with you.

[He watched as Yuri slipped the chain over his head and smiled.]

I figured the chains were a good way to go. Close to the heart.

[ The name doesn't ring a bell, but it's not like he knows everyone here. ]

Do I get veto power?

[ He's absolutely kidding. Can't... really think of a date idea that he wouldn't like, so long as it's with Flynn. Stupid schmaltzy way to feel. ]

Plus, I do an awful lot of punching people, and you wear a lot of plate. Traditional rings would kind of get in the way.

[ Passing... the other ring back? ]

Of course you do.

[Flynn takes the other ring and then without a fuss, settles the ring on the chain around his neck, and tucks it safely underneath his shirt, patting it where it rests.]

That's true. I'll have to think of a really special date to go with you, soon.

[ Just watching for a moment. ]

Doesn't have to be fancy. Just—

[ oh man he is about to say something incredibly cheesy ] [ pausing and wrinkling his nose at his own words but ]

...being with you's gonna make it plenty special.

Oh. Well, that's great to hear. It's the same for me too, just so you know.

[He taps his fingers to Yuri's cheek gently.]

I said special, not fancy.

[ Turns his head and feints a nip at those fingers. ]

That corny line's taken, get your own.

[ Smallest beat. ]

—Oh, and, uh. For the record. This is a 'yes'.

[ He'll marry you or whatever. ]

[Leans forward nipping back at his lower lip.]

Uh huh. I don't want to, I want to use that line too.

[Flynn grins and kisses Yuri gently, briefly.]

I'll make you happy, I promise.

[ Huffs. ]

I'd like to report a theft, someone keeps stealing all my best lines.

[ ...That last part... ]

Might be kind of a tall order sometimes.

[He leaned over and gave him one more kiss. After, he slowly stood offering Yuri a hand.]

[ Taking that hand. Back to the party, then. ]

—This is still your birthday party, but all the gifts for the both of us are a little more appropriate now.

Oh? That's really nice of everyone. I'm glad you were able to get gifts as well.

[He helps Yuri up and squeezes his hand before letting him go.]

Okay. Back to the party.
