Plant Octopi Are Evolving

[Today, Vennessa has traded her usual sword for a spear and is currently crouched at the edge of the lake working on securing a length of rope to it. Since it doesn’t matter if she kills the plant octopi, she isn’t really thinking about being careful with how she captures them.]

If you think you have a better arm than me, I don’t mind being the bait.

[She’s thinking about getting one of the things close enough to the edge of the water to be able to spear it and drag it in without too much trouble. Of course this comes with its dangers… but it would definitely save some time.]

Once we’re done here, are you going diving into the caves?

Flowers for the Sun

[As someone with a little sister Vennessa is well versed in the art of flower crown creation, though needing to apply an enchantment to the flowers she picks is a new step. She has been doing that as she goes, but somewhere along the way (and with a half-full basket of flowers) Vennessa has stopped to sit down and make a flower crown of her own.]

I’d make these with Lind when I had the time. [She comments to her companion with a smile as she weaves the flowers together.] My younger sister. I suppose she’s getting a little old for it now, but we still do it together.

Maybe It Bugs Me

How are such huge bugs so good at not being found?

[It feels like they’ve been looking for ages with no sign of any maple mantis, four metres tall or otherwise. How can something so big be so good at hiding?

Vennessa stops walking to look around, squinting up into the trees and resting her hand against the pommel of her sword.]

Say, do you think cutting one of the maple trees might draw them to us?

Were there any particular flowers that you used for this sort of thing?

[ Mafuyu asks out of curiosity; after all, if she's more familiar with this sort of thing than she is, she might know better. ]

Windwheel asters, calla lilies, cecilias, lamp grass...

[She carefully threads one flower through the stem of another, tucking it in close before securing it.] Lind would have loved to be able to make one with dandelions, but she could never get the seeds to stay on while she did it.

[Vennessa chuckles and shakes her head.]

She kept trying, though... and every time she scattered the seeds to the winds, and I'd tell her to use them to carry a message to the Anemo archon so it wasn't wasted.

I'm not familiar with a lot of these, but that story sounds wonderful. It would be pretty difficult to put dandelions on a flower crown; it'd just end up being stems.

[ She giggles lightly. ]

But this 'Anemo archon'... is that the god of the world you're from?

One of them.

[And there is a definite fondness in her expression when she speaks of him, too. Something that someone doesn't get from some kind of distant, theoretical relationship with a deity.]

Barbatos was of great help to me in a time of need. Though I'm sure that he would say I was helping him just as much.

I see... he must be rather kind, then.

He is.

[Vennessa pauses and lowers her hands, the half-made flower crown in one and a flower in the other, and she looks off with a distant expression.]

He is one of my dearest friends. If not dearest friend. Funny to think that such a friendship between a mere mortal and an archon might exist, but he has never once made me feel as if he views me as beneath him.

I see... I've never seen a god back home, where I'm from. But I think that's pretty amazing.

[ Ayaka does not mind not being remembered, when she's accepted this as a common occurrence. She hopes she and Vennessa will still be able to get along, though, at least. ]

One can never be too old to spend time with their sibling.

[ At least, Ayaka thinks so. She's a very sentimental young lady, so others may think differently. ]

I've never made flower crowns with my brother before, but I imagine it would be a very fun activity, too.

Maybe you should. He might take to the idea.

[Men could be funny about things like this sometimes but Vennessa sees no reason why men should not make flower crowns as easily as women. Were they not possessed of a similar kind of creativity and did they not have the same ability with fine motor control? Dismissing such a thing as beneath them for being too feminine is just... silly.

She picks up another flower, carefully weaving it into the ones she had already put together.]

Does he think the same as you? That one can never be too old to spend time together?

I hope so. Ayato always tries to make time for me.

[ Which is why she hates to always ask, because she knows she might be trampling on his other plans. The man very rarely has free time, after all. ]

I know we are both adults now, but. . . I will always look up to him.

Oh, Ayato is your brother!

[She should have seen it right away! They look so very alike, but she hadn't wanted to make assumptions and had then simply forgotten to bring it up. Vennessa smiles though, warmed by hearing what Ayaka has to say about her sibling.]

I think that's how it should be. Being able to look up to your elder brother or sister like that. I've always tried to make myself a good example for Lind.

You've met him?

[ That seems to perk her up a ton! And now she's momentarily distracted from weaving flowers together. ]

Of course, it does not go just one way. As the younger sibling, I should like it if my elder sibling looked up to me, as well.

Not in person, but we've spoken before.

[Getting involved in the government here is a slow thing and she doesn't want to put pressure on Ayato by calling on him for a favour when it seems that he... really does have enough on his plate at the moment.

Her offer to help him out is always open if he wants to take it.]

I'm sure he's very proud of you, Ayaka.

[ Ayaka certainly hopes so. But certain events have made her faith in herself waver. She could use the boost of confidence again in July hagsakfk ]

There's a limit to making one hundred flower crowns, but I can't imagine making that many.

I can't imagine having the time to make that many! Not if they're not going to fall apart the moment you put them down.

[She shakes her head as her attention goes back down to the crown she's weaving together. There hadn't been anything said about quality, but Vennessa isn't going to do a poor job for the sake of quantity.]

I thought something like this might be a nice change to the more dangerous things that need doing around here.

I think I prefer this type of quest over the ones that require combat.

[ Sure, she likes exploring, but those are dangerous. She doesn't think she can keep doing it consistently.

She's finished a couple flower crowns by now, all different kinds of colours! ]

I understand. [Though Vennessa is very accustomed to combat she does prefer to avoid it at this stage of her life, if she possibly can. But as someone who is so accustomed to it, she sometimes feels as if she ought to step in in the stead of the people who can't.]

I was a gladiator when I was younger, but I like to take a break from fighting now and then.

What about here? What is it that you do?

[ Aside from make flower crowns and do quests, anyway. ]

I have been considering getting involved with the government, much in the same way your brother has.

[Though not in exactly the same way - she wouldn't want to step on his toes. That said, she has got the impression he could use the help sometimes even if he doesn't actually ask for it.]

Though I keep having second thoughts.

Why are you having second thoughts?

Hmm...

[She does think about it before she answers and is clearly measuring her words as she does.]

Because I know how it is to have that kind of weight on my shoulders, and even though I know I can take it... I'm not entirely sure if I want to do it while I'm here.

[ Meanwhile, there's Ayato who's doing it because that's what he grew up doing. ]

No one will fault you if you choose not to do it.

[ And it's not like anyone is pressuring her to do it, either! Ayaka doesn't exactly know Vennessa's circumstances, but that's just what she thinks on a surface level. ]

What else would you do?

Hmm...

[What else? Well, at the risk of putting too much weight into the conversation she decides to veer away from the ways her life has been limited, even before her people's capture by the Lawrence clan, and she just smiles.]

I might like to adventure. To explore.

[Yes, she thinks she will like that very much.]

To have a life without the weight of responsibility that I've never felt able to refuse... at least for a little while.

[ Being an adventurer, she imagines, is very fun! Risky, but you would be able to travel all over the world and meet all kinds of people. It's so very different from what Ayaka does, and she gets excited whenever she hears about people's travels. ]

I've never gone on an expedition before, except for the quests that make you travel to the other Segments. It has been exciting, though. But I don't think that is the kind of lifestyle I would be able to thrive in.

[ Once in a while is okay! ]

I think you would do well going on adventures, especially if it is something you really want to do.
