Who: Venti, Yuri, Saya, Lumine, and Kantera
What: A moment of respite

Warnings: Probably mentions of previous game trauma/violence

[ Venti has always been the type who wanders to the beat of his own drum, dipping in and out of people's lives as easily as the blowing wind. But Tokyo-F . . . changed things, somewhat.

Though his initial instinct had been to sleep under a tree and call it "home," an invitation to live with old friends put a halt to those plans. For starters, it would be protection from the unpredictable weather in the segments. For another, maybe he did get used to having a bed and a room to call "home," in no small part because of the teammates and friends who inhabited it with him. Now that solitary tree feels . . . lonely, in a way it didn't before.

And so here he is, standing at the threshold of a house full of people he loves and trusts, who asked him to stay . . . it makes him feel his age, but not in a bad way, for once. Nor does he feel that nagging urge to disappear into the wind.

Should he catch anyone watching him, the pensive expression dissolves into a smile. ]

Hehe, is this the part where we fight over bedrooms?

[ Why would he ask about the bedroom thing, it just makes sense to him. Also a little bit amused to see her lugging the TV out. ]

Hey, now, we could sell that.

[ He won't actually protest if she wants to smash it with a hammer, to be clear; catharsis is good. But TVs can be exchanged for ~~goods and services~~ food, more tea, maybe a kotatsu. ]

I'm not demolishing it, just putting it elsewhere. I was thinking the starter apartment Doctor and I got.

Besides, I won't be sleeping for the next few weeks or months, I'm planning to bring in plenty of cash.

It's a my hibernation cycle got reset thing. You remember how restless I was at first? I don't need hardly any sleep right now. It's like a watch wound too tight, and then it slowly winds down until it --

[ stops. Not the most comforting example, in hindsight. ]

...Sorry. But it's apt.

[ He blinks, then gives her a little half smile. ]

New world. New rules.

[ The briefest pause, hesitating to actually say it because he can't promise shit, but— ]

Might be something we can do about that.

I was thinking that. We're in a magic world. Who's to say there isn't something that could change things?

[ All she asks is that someone help her with it. Doctor seems to not want to think about it, maybe it's too painful?, but she has to. She has no idea how long she has. ]

That's part of why I want to join one of the guilds once those are hiring. Get paid to go out there and look.

Heh. I was in a guild back home, actually, so that was my thought, too.

[ Half a beat. Watching her, before his gaze flits away to be less unsubtle. ]

We called it Brave Vesperia, after what we thought was the morning star. Did all kinds of things — delivering packages, looking for missing persons, exploring places...

No reason we couldn't start up a local branch. [ His lips turn up. ] Karol would like that, I bet.

[ It's still weird to be able to use people's names, to know people's names. He kind of wants to make a flowchart putting all the names to any faces Zari might have seen in his memories. ]

[ What they thought was the morning star? Huh. ]

I really like that idea. Between the two of us there's not a lot we couldn't handle.

[ She doesn't need a flow chart, it's fine. Details and such don't bother her unless they become relevant to something that's right in front of her. ]

[ Look, Estelle and Karol came up with the name, Judith's a member, it's just a lot of names he could be interrupting himself to add. ]

Oh, Repede's definitely a member, too. [ A wink. ] It wasn't a big guild back home, me and Karol and Judith and Repede... but I wouldn't be opposed to more members, as long as they're willing to follow our charter.

[ And then he turns just the tiniest bit more serious, but he knows she won't have a problem with the rules. ]

Law #1: We support each other and always act with the interests of the whole guild in mind.

Law #2: We strive to always do the right thing, and punish those who don't — both within the guild and without. If a guild member does wrong, there have to be consequences.

Law #3: All for the guild, and the guild for all.

[ Smallest beat. ]

I've been punished in accordance with the guild laws myself. [ Giving her a smile. ] Karol had the three of us stay up late on research duty instead of getting to relax for the night.

[ Yes somehow the whole guild was being punished at once, and it wasn't especially bad, so you don't have to worry too much. ]

[ Hearing those rules, she hesitates. ]

Of course I have no problem with that, but what if I -- if this place puts me out of my right mind? [ And she goes on a murder spree or whatever ]

That "all for one, one for all" bit?

It means we figure out together how to deal with any punishments that have to happen.

[ He'd say, obviously you're not responsible for anything you do under those circumstances? ...But he feels like she'll like this better. ]

[ Excellent call, she absolutely likes the idea that she'd be punished for her indiscretions. Almost like they know each other by now. ]

Good.

I assume there's no problem with hurting people consensually. [ Since like half their own sex life is exactly that. Also sparring, etc. If there's an outlet for her sadistic side everyone's better off. It might not be "doing the right thing" precisely but it's not doing the wrong thing. ]

[ Wild how that happens. ]

"Do Justice and punish the unjust."

As long as everyone involved's a consenting adult, there's no injustice happening.

[ ...You'd like Judith, although she's gonna have a field day when he finally admits the masochism thing to her. ]

Then I'm fine with all that.

[ She defines "adult" the same way this place does, 16+ with free will and enthusiastic consent. If any other weird contingencies arise due to the fact that jamjars gonna jamjar, they'll deal with it. She trusts him. ]

So did you all advertise openly, or sidle up to people in seedy taverns and whisper in dark corners, or what? [ How does a guild get business? ]

[ Works for him. Honestly he's not gonna be policing any teenagers' extracurriculars, 16 is more too young for him than too young for anyone. ] [ A bit of a laugh! ]

Well, back home there's a lot of guilds, kind of like it seems like there might be here. You could operate by the seat of your pants if you really wanted, but most guilds signed up with the Union. Get your charters approved, pay a membership fee, agree to abide by some basic rules of business — and the Union was basically insurance for anyone who needed a guild job done.

Union-member guilds always follow through on their jobs to the best of their ability. No taking a client's money and running off with it, for example.

[ An airy gesture. ]

Minimal bureaucracy while still making sure clients feel safe. Non-Union guilds still get hired sometimes, of course, because they're cheaper. It's a risk-reward thing.

[ Beat. ]

We did a mix, though, honestly. Some jobs through the Union's job board, some through word of mouth, some we just stumbled upon.

I'll have to follow your lead, then. [ She usually prefers the direct approach, but it's whatever helps the guild evidently! ]

I guess we'll have to see how it works here, too. It could be pretty different. I wish they'd open them up, already.

Heh, me too. I know it might take a while to save up for, like... office space. I kind of want to saving now.

We should. The more cash we can squirrel away soon, the better.

I'm sure we can come up with some creative way to earn cash. Back there people used their skills for all kinds of things to earn points. We don't have the same abilities, but we have an idea what's popular.

Maybe you could bake those cute desserts and we could sell them. [ While dressed up in uniforms of *some kind*. ]

What, like a bake sale?

[ Charmed. ]

[ He'd also say Lumine but he doesn't know she can cook yet! ]

I'm sure he would, but he's not great at making desserts look cute like you are. They're tasty, but not fancy. So maybe he could help with the baking part more.

[ There's the teeniest bit of potential Tsun Activation there, suggesting he makes desserts look unusually cute, because sometimes he's motivated to go to that much trouble for people, okay, but Yuri takes a breath and shakes his head with a chuckle instead. ]

Feel free. He'd admit it himself. He doesn't like eating cute things, so he doesn't make them cute.

—Is that a very indirect way of telling me I shouldn't be too creative with any food I expect him to eat?
