The last of the boxes were finally unpacked and were bundled and next to the door, waiting to be picked up or put out for someone else to use. A pair of shoes sat abandoned by the door. And Zoey had already taped a pressed cherry blossom petal to the fridge with a handwritten don’t touch this note. Morning light filtered in from the street-facing windows, soft and pale, catching on curtains that hadn’t quite been hemmed yet.

Zoey was already awake.

She padded through the house in her turtle pajamas that were close enough to the ones she wore at home that she enjoyed them—bare feet thudding quietly against the floor as if she physically could not contain herself. Her hair was a mess, not yet in its usual style, and she didn’t seem to care in the slightest. There was a buzz under her skin, the kind that came from too much excitement and not nearly enough sleep. She paused in the kitchen, leaned her elbows on the counter, and grinned at absolutely nothing. Starting some water boiling for tea, as well as a bit of coffee.

Mira was back.

The thought hit her again like it had every five minutes since she’d woken up, and Zoey pressed her lips together to keep from laughing out loud. She bounced once on her heels, then again, fingers drumming against the countertop as if her energy had nowhere else to go.

Zoey turned, padding toward the living room, careful—barely—to keep her steps quiet, just in case Mira had decided to sleep on the couch again or was still there. There was a lot more room in the house than there had been in the starter apartments. Plus now Zoey had a closet that went on forever, literally. She'd already given Rumi her key, and the other had been hanging up next to the closet, but today it was finally going to be given to the person it'd always been meant for.
