Lots of things! Like this!

[Rinku lifts up a rounded clay drum with a hole in the front.]

This one's an udu! I got it in Nigeria when we lived there for a couple months when I was a kid. Between when we left Japan and when we ended up on Tiotio Island, my parents took me around to a whole bunch of countries, and I started collecting instruments. I don't have as many as I have shells, though!

And mess with it some, too, just to figure out what all noises it can make. With a look of realization as he does!]

... I got a lot of samples with this kinda sound in'em, dang. Why's so much techno use this kinda "bwop" sound?
Or somethin' close to it, anyhow... I guess a lot of it's prolly digital rather than samples - fucked up sine waves 'n shit.

[It's like he's a kid trying to figure out a new toy...]

What other kindsa percussion you got? I bet you got some real weird shit in there, huh?

Kinda! Like these!

[Rinku smiles as Chipp plays with the udu, and she picks up a set of claves and strikes them against each other.]

Claves are kinda common, but they're easy to learn with! Oh, and they're kinda like these, I got them when I first came back to Japan --

[She sets them down and picks up another set of wooden blocks, these ones tied together with a braided rope.]

Hyoushigi! This is what makes the bom-bom-bom sound at festivals and kabuki theatre and stuff. You play them by hitting them on the floor!

Hyoushigi...? Wait -
I thought it were the barrel drums that make the "bom-bom-bom" sound? Taiko?
Or... we got a different definition of "bom-bom-bom"?

[... Thankfully, his pronunciation of Japanese is weirdly precise. To the point that it sounds strange alongside everything else he says.

He's got a friend back home that taught him all she could... and literally wrenched his arm every time he said anything incorrectly, so, y'know.
He ended up being a pretty quick learner. He may not know what literally any of it means, but at least he can say it right.]

Kinda! I don't have any taiko, those wouldn't fit on the shelf. But they get used in festivals too! I guess when you need different instruments for different stuff.

Ouais, yeah, taiko're kinda huge... 's too bad - I like how they sound!
Friend's gotta few, back home. Uses'em as part of'er drum kit.
They sound nuts in metal, yeah. Crazy-crazy.

That sounds like a ton of fun! Are all your friends back home musicians?

Not all of'em, naw. Mostly just her 'n her girlfriend; they like to perform outta they car shop, sometimes.

[Because somehow, someway, the little group Chipp's a part of ended up with two car nuts.
One of them being Chipp, of course.]

We collab sometimes, even if I gotta be in disguise up on stage - but those two, they like how my voice sounds for they metal 'n stuff.
It makes sense; rough voice like mine makes all the growlin' 'n shit easy-easy.

... I figure you know tons o' musicians yourself, though?

Yeah, lots! Pretty much all my friends back in Nakano. I mean, I get along with everybody, but my first day at school, I heard a song on the lunchtime radio that I'd only ever heard once, when I was a little kid at an outdoor festival! So I had to drop everything and find the broadcast booth, and that's where I met Maho-chan! And she taught me everything about DJing and took me to see Peaky P-Key, they were Yoba Academy's top unit. Or I guess probably still are since time stops back home so they wouldn't've graduated by now. And ever since then, we formed a unit and met other people like us, and it just keeps spreading out like a spiral!

[Said with a clear smile in his voice, of course. He's starting to enjoy using her own phrase while talking to Rinku - it's just such a heartwarming idea, and the phrase she uses for it's cute to boot.]

You do one thing, and then a whole bunch of stuff happens because of that. Right?
