[His words make her breathe a sharp intake of air. Her cheeks flush, but she doesn't life her head for him to see.]
You can't just
say
things like that!
[He doesn't mean it. He's just trying to make her feel better, or maybe he's just caught up in the moment.
Still, she doesn't move, even when he nuzzles the top of her head. She purses her lips before speaking again.]
I can't trust them yet. I can't let down my guard. It's not so... simple.
[Kainé is grateful for that comfort, even if she wants to think he'd do the same for anyone.
A few more sniffles and she wipes the rest of the tears from her eyes.]
I'll try.
[She makes to get up, his arms still around her.]
I think I'm okay now. He's gone quiet.
[Another shift as she makes a weak attempt at moving away.]
I should... head home.
