Something Old, Something New

Part 1
March 21st

Nightwake is buzzing with excitement. The Dragon Lord, Opallios, has sent a proxy to Nightwake. This young dragon is an ivory colored, medium sized dragon, perfect for mingling with regular people. After a meeting with the guild leaders, the dragon addresses everyone with a booming voice, almost like it's coming from loudspeakers throughout the city.

"Otherworlders", he says. "My name is Einnainth and I'm here on the behalf of the Dragon Lord. You have been invited to the Abandoned Castle by Lord Opallios. We have worked hard to repurpose the place into sanctuary for all dragons and power holders. There, you may participate in a ritual to unlock completely new powers with our help. If you wish to hear details, I will be at the Solarpeak Beach."

The same message is also send to each device, just in case someone missed the announcement.

Those who come to meet Einnainth can see him enjoying affectionate pets from the local children. He will be explain that it was finally time to entrust ancient power holder magic to the otherworlders, as well as the four guild leaders. Dragons have always been the guardians of the powers so it was their duty to pass it on when the time was right.

He also requests to get some supplies for the castle, such as wood and stone, if they're able to spare them. They still have a lot of work to be done in the castle. While they can fix most things with magic, just conjuring materials from thin air is very taxing.

Part 2
(March 22nd onwards)

New teleport crystals have been installed near the Abandoned Castle. All of the four guilds have counterparts for quick travel. Of course otherworlders are allowed to travel to the castle however they want. The crystals lead to a gazebo; those arriving from the summer and spring guilds end up near the summer side entrance, while autumn and winter arrive at the autumn side. It doesn't matter which side someone ends up in, as both entrances lead into the same area.

Those who have visited the Abandoned Castle before can notice a huge change. The walls that separated the two sides before have been knocked down. The only thing separating them is the way they're decorated and their general architecture: summer side is made more of stone and has no furniture or decorations left, while the autumn side has warm, wooden tones and plenty of dusty furniture and decorations in autumn colors.

Dragons have brought in plenty of moss and other soft natural materials for people to sit on. Their own sleeping quarters are in the rooms or outside on the roof. Peeking into them will reveal some of them have started hoarding different things in the middle of their rooms. Leaving them something they collect will result in the dragon becoming their friend.

There's plenty of time to socialize with the dragons before the main event begins. Plenty of berries, vegetables and fruit have been gathered for anyone to eat. Some dragons even have meat and fish.

Part 3

Once everyone is gathered and settled down, Opallios makes an appearance. He's larger than most of the dragons present, white with gold accents. Many might remember him from the Frozen Falls.

"Welcome, everyone. We have gathered you here to help you unlock ancient abilities that we have been safekeeping. These powers are more difficult to master and some of them are even dangerous. However, we have full fate in you, hence why we are ready to pass the powers back into your hands."

He explains that the ritual will happen in special mindscapes, shaped by their minds. It will done in pairs and there's no rush. They can work on the unlocking as long as they need. No one has to do this right now either, as the dragons will remain here and help them anytime they want.

After that, he conjures very old-looking parchments from the air for everyone. They have a list of abilities they're about to unlock, written by the people of old.

Between the Truths and Lies

Part 1

The ritual to unlock the powers starts off simple. There are several small fires in the main room set up. Otherworlders are tasked with finding a partner and then sitting with them by one of them. However, the dragons warn that the more familiar the partner they choose is, the more dangerous the ritual would be. It's better to pick someone who they aren't so deeply bonded with for this.

Once the pair has settled down, one of the dragons approaches them. Next step is to hold hands or otherwise form a physical contact and close their eyes. The dragon will then breathe out a veil of mist that surrounds them. It feels comfortable, making it easier to relax. Slowly, the physical world starts feeling more distant.

Suddenly the pair will feel like they're floating. If they open their eyes they will be greeted with clear blue skies and a vast meadow they're about to gently land on. However, the moment they land the scenery changes; the scenery shifts according to what fits their states of mind. It splits neatly into half, one side for each person.

The state of mind can be visualized in different ways. Someone who has no problems or burdens may just have the same meadow with the blue skies while those with heavy burdens may have an approaching storm on the horizon. The meadow could also be withered and gray instead of the lush bright green, or even on fire.

Even if the two would have similar minds, there are still obvious changes. However if the pair is very close to one another the scenery will seem like it fits together seamlessly, no matter how different their minds are. They even have the risk of melding completely together, which can end up with both of them dead. They have to be constantly focusing on their sense of self to keep the two mindscapes separate. Whenever they stop doing so they will feel it as an ache all over their body.

Part 2

Several different colored energy lines travel across the mindscapes. All of them have a different purpose. The bright golden ones are their touch energy, which are currently actively burning. Other colors vary between what season they represent; blue for winter, pink for spring, green for summer and orange for autumn. They have several different shades, representing all kinds of different abilities. Those with special powers from home will also notice an energy line for them.

The pair must follow the right colored lines through a variety of different landscapes; forests, mountains, rivers, and so on. Their lines follow the same path; straight in the middle of the two mindscapes. There's even a chance of enemy counters (representing enemies from home or from Ellipsa), depending on just how dark their state of mind is. All of their powers, seasonal or otherwise, work here so they are able to fight the enemies off. Dying means failing the ritual, injuries will reflects as unpleasant pain for a while after.

At the end of the lines they will find a wall with a gate. Only by touching the gate at the same time will it open and behind it they will find several illusions of themselves. Approaching them will have them tell them something that is either a complete lie or the absolute truth about the person.

Their next task is to find the ones that tell the truth. Accepting the truths, no matter how unpleasant, will the the person absorb energy; this energy will feel like they're unlocking something new. Denying the truth will break the mindscape around them, causing cracks. Too many cracks will completely break it down, waking them up from the mindscape and ending the ritual in a failure.

Accepting a lie as the truth will also result in absorbing energy, but this energy will result in a minor injury in the real body and feels unpleasant.

The amount of accepted truths needed to unlock the abilities varies between each person, but there has to be at least five different ones. These can be just simple things like "he has brown hair" or "she sucks at karaoke", but also truths they necessarily don't want anyone to find out.

Optionally, characters can also capture a floating ball of energy inside the gate that will unlock the ability to do emotion magic. However, this can either be completely ignored or just unnoticed.

Part 3

After the pair has gathered all the possible energy, they are ready to wake up again. To do this, they must join their hands together and focus on the physical feeling of their own bodies. Their mind starts feeling more distant and eventually, they can feel like they're sitting once again.

The dragons congratulate them on their success and offer to tell them all about their season's abilities in more detail. Some even enthusiastically tell them all about emotion magic that may become something like a wildcard for them in battles.

People can redo the ritual with others, should they wish to help them unlock these abilities as well. However, they do not gain anything by doing it (unless they missed the emotional magic part) - other than possibly a deeper connection with the other person.

Do You Remember When Days Were Like That?

Part 1

With all this excitement, don't forget that all around the city, the End-of-Winter Festival is in full swing! Ever since long ago, this festival has been a cultural mainstay to say goodbye to winter and bring in spring (on the calendar, at least, since the seasons all stay in their places).

In every district, there are bonfires set up here and there. They're all in places far from the centre and away from anything particularly flammable, for the sake of anyone uncomfortable with fire -- but they're all festival hubs for people to gather. Just like last year, all the traditional activities are back: dressing in costumes and masks to symbolize winter and spring; singing and dancing around the fire; dramatic improvised plays where people are asked to act out a battle between winter and spring; and, of course, the pancake breakfasts! Thanks to the recent quests, most of them even have real maple syrup instead of the cheap golden corn syrup in the packet. Or berry syrup, if you're not into maple.

The jellycats (cats that have jelly-like shells protecting them. The shells wiggle everytime they purr and they can retreat back into them whenever they're uncomfortable) also make another appearance, staring at anyone eating pancakes and hoping they'll share a bite. They come in various colors and scents (each jellycat smells different to different people). The scent becomes stronger the more a jellycat likes and trusts a person.

Part 2

The traditional festivities aren't the only festivities this time around. After a very successful showing at last year's Arts Festival, the fanclubs of assorted otherworlders who have become minor or major celebrities through quests, missions, or even just plain social media presence are back. Not just that, but they've gotten serious and have opened an Otherworlder Fan Merch Store down a side street in Nightwake near one of the festival hubs.

They've certainly gone all out, even compared to when they just had festival merch booths. Otherworlders can find themselves on all kinds of merchandise like buttons, keychains, mugs, art prints, acrylic stands, and even 3D mouse pads and body pillow covers. Further back in the store are more esoteric goods. How many people are buying collector plates with the city's heroes on them? Who would buy a wallet with their face on it? Pasta shapes in a can?! Someone's gotten creative.

Past a curtain (wait, no, that's a shower curtain with life-sized images of characters, also available for sale), there's a section advertising "Unauthorized Biographies." Flipping through the comics and novels, one thing is clear -- this is the doujin section. How much of a market is there for RPF of the otherworlders? It's not even all dirty; at least half of these are coffee shop AUs shipping people with their friends or overly personal gushing about the time the subject of the story saved the author during a quest or a time monsters got into the city.

Part 3

The Amberfall Library doesn't have a bonfire (for obvious reasons), but it's also running as an event hub of a different sort. Following the Dragon Lord's announcement, they've brought up some archived books for people to peruse about the old days of the now unsealed season magic.

There aren't very many, owing to how long ago it was, but a few still remain. The biggest feature is a book of short stories, where two specific stories are bookmarked.

In "The Tale of Spring and Autumn," two lovers on a mission, a Spring and an Autumn power user, find a massive and powerful monster beyond description that threatens their home. Pushed to the brink, the Spring mage increases her own magic over and over, disregarding her own safety, to wound the monster gravely, but the overuse of that ability turns her into a tree, and the monster knocks the tree down. The Autumn mage breaks down in a fit of grief and uses her wood powers to kill the monster with the wood of the tree.

In "The Tale of Winter and Summer," a Summer power user is guarding a Winter exorcist when they come upon a spirit searching for help. The Winter channels them to fulfill their last wish to save their town from the pirates that killed them, but the spirit turns out to be lying and is actually a ghost pirate themself, and the Winter struggles and ultimately fails to take back his body from the ghost. The Summer, seeing the rest of the ghost crew gaining on them, causes a landslide with a magical explosion.

Thankfully, they're not all that depressing. Any would-be scholars can read gathered information about their new abilities, though these ancient sources might not always be the easiest to parse.

And as a festival activity, the library has also provided paper and writing utensils for attendees to write about what season magic means to them. They can be anything the writer wants and will be posted up in the library for the duration of the event!

Eva Ushiromiya | Umineko no Naku Koro Ni | Spring

[personal profile] onesurvived 2025-03-21 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
The Ritual
[Eva jumped on the prospect of learning new magic immediately. Yes, she had a bet with Hijikata that she’d outdo him in magic by the end of the year, but more than that, her determination to get her spring magic back on track drove her forward into the ritual.

If she did have to conduct it with a stranger… Well, not ideal, but better than something potentially fatal.

The storm hit as soon as she and her partner landed. Heavy winds battered the pair of them, sending sheets of rain across her half of the mindscape. And all the while, thick, impenetrable darkness encroached all around and limited their range of vision. It all served to make Eva's mood worse. She shivered, cursing and rubbing her arms before feeling for her shotgun- dammit, please let the damn thing have come with her-

If only she could hear seagulls in the sky.]

They said we needed to look for lines of magic, right?? Maybe if we follow one we’ll get out of-... what is that??

[Her eyes scanned the horizon- but the glow she pointed out didn't belong to a thread of magic. No, pairs of glowing eyes began to slowly emerged from the dark, one after another. Strong, humanoid figures dressed like butlers- figures with goat heads.]

Truth And Lies
Umineko Spoilers
[If Eva had realised sooner that the ritual involved speaking truths, perhaps she would have avoided it. After all, however deep her thirst for power ran, the secrets she held close to her heart… More than anything else, even if Ellipsa existed far, far away from her own world, those secrets had to stay there, no matter what.

But the illusionary Eva showed no such reservations, smirking viciously.]

“Ushiromiya Eva has blood on her hands.”

…Seriously, you're full of shit!

[Eva practically snarled at the copy. One that was withered with age- and all at once, she became aware of how old she looked, and of the weight of blood soaked into the Head’s Ring she wore.

Soon enough she would become the twisted old witch she had seen in visions of her future- but not yet. She had to focus on the woman in front of her. First, without a doubt, she would have to accept everything that happened in this mindspace.]

Dragon Castle
tw minor injuries/implied spoilers
Shit. Fuck. Damn dragons.

[Despite her setbacks, Eva finally staggered through the ritual and woke up on the other side.

But it had not been without its penalties. As it turned out, whilst lies could be accepted as truths just the way actual ones could, each one had left their mark behind. Each embraced lie left behind a cut, a bruise, or some other injury on her real body.

And it seemed that Eva had accepted far more than her fair share of lies as the ritual had run its course. That was the price she paid for her magic.

She had slipped away from her partner and found an out the way room in the castle, somewhere she could take the chance to patch herself up- cleaning off her wounds with a cloth. Yes, she had spring magic, but she had never taken the time to learn healing, much to her detriment. Frustrated tears started to prick up as she soaked the cloth in the sink again, before pressing it to a gash on her arm.

Whatever pain she was suffering now… this was only a taste of what was to come, wasn’t it?

Perhaps she could use some help.]

Jellycats
No, absolutely not. I already have plenty of cats, alright? Go bother someone else.

It seemed that the local Jellycat population had the uncanny ability to spot the presence of a cat lady in their midst from a fair distance. And as such, as soon as Eva settled down with her breakfast pancakes, a number of them swarmed over to keep her company.

Or steal her food, could be either.

Despite Eva‘s glare in their general direction, it would only be a matter of time before they wore her down!]

Dragon Castle

[Jean had finished his ritual a while ago and was now waiting for some of his companions to come back as well so they could either go over things or leave together. He decides to wander around and see if there are other hoards he can help with while here.

As he wanders he ends up seeing Eva tending to her wounds. He knocks on the doorframe before walking in.]

Eva? What happened?
onesurvived: (Genuine Concern (Maybe))

Wow I'm late, apologies

[personal profile] onesurvived 2025-05-13 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
[A tension shot through her body- shit- she hadn't even noticed someone else arrive.]

Huh- Jean. You startled me.

[If it weren't someone she already trusted, she'd be far more defensive. But as it was, she lowered her guard, giving a heavy sigh.]

You've already done the ritual, right? That whole thing was a shitshow.
chimaerically: (concerned)

the ritual

[personal profile] chimaerically 2025-03-26 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
[ She’s never met Eva before this, but the dragons did recommend undertaking the ritual with someone one wasn’t deeply bonded with, and so she offered to be her partner for the experience; being taken into their shared mindspace, however, has given her some doubts. They’re complete strangers, and so their minds are very clearly delineated, Falin’s being represented by golden wheat fields that seem to stretch on almost infinitely to one side, with a tall castle on the distant horizon; the sky above it is a clear pale blue, a far cry from the darkness and rain that envelop them in Eva’s half of the mindscape. She shivers and wraps both arms around herself, as if trying to give herself a reassuring hug. ]

They did! [ She sounds almost enthusiastic — the thought of getting out of this rather unwelcoming place is starting to appeal more and more — but she cuts herself off from continuing the thought when she follows Eva’s gaze and sees the glowing red eyes. ] Are these… monsters? Do you have those where you come from?

[ She assumes not, based on Eva’s reaction, but she wants to be sure. If these are indeed monsters, ones that need to be defeated or avoided, then this would be a more familiar situation to her than frankly anything she’s experienced in Ellipsa so far; this world has been a string of surprises with no end in sight, but slaying monsters is her bread and butter, and in a weird way it would almost be comforting to go back to doing something she’s so familiar with. She rests a hand on the grip of the mace dangling from her belt, once again thankful for the fact that it appeared here with her; it has a very reassuring presence, both as an item from home and as a blunt object perfectly suited to smashing this world’s many dangers. ]
onesurvived: (Considering)

Wow I'm late, apologies

[personal profile] onesurvived 2025-05-24 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
[When Falin first approached Eva, she hadn't thought much of her, although that mace had caught her attention. Could a girl like this really fight if things went to hell in here? With a mind-scape so clear and peaceful, it was probably just for show, right?

Another thought, as she finally secured the grip on her shotgun and squinted against the rain. She was about the same age as George, right...?

Before she could dwell on it, Falin brought the attention back to the goat butlers. Creatures whose eyes had fallen on the two and were lumbering closer-]

Do I look like I know what these things are?!

[Shit. Even as she aimed the barrel right at them and backed up a few paces, the goats did not slow their advance-]
chimaerically: (intense2)

no worries!

[personal profile] chimaerically 2025-05-26 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
[ She does not; in fact, if Falin was to genuinely answer that question, she would say that Eva looks like someone who has little idea what’s going on and absolutely hates being in that position. She’s not about to say that out loud, though, certainly not to a woman holding a gun. She has never seen them before coming to Ellipsa, and she’s still not entirely sure of how they work, but she knows they’re weapons, and that’s enough to make her decide it’s best to avoid antagonising someone who’s holding one. Instead, she just pulls out her mace and grips it firmly with both hands. ]

It’s okay! I’m sure we can take care of them!

[ That is assuming they’re hostile, but seeing how they continue to walk towards them without hesitation or any attempt at communication, she’s guessing they’re not friendly at the very least. She watches their reaction to Eva’s behaviour, not wanting to attack until they do, but she’s soon forced to act as one of the closest goat butlers charges towards Eva, a red blade shimmering into life above its hand. She gestures quickly in their direction and speaks a few quick words, and a shield appears in front of Eva, pale blue and mainly transparent and in just the right place to block the goat man’s blade. A sharp little sound rings out, like a tightly wound string being carelessly plucked. ]

Watch out!

[ Not that Eva really needs the warning, what with the goat man being this close. Falin, meanwhile, gets in the way of one approaching them from the side and takes a swing at it, not really expecting to bring it down just yet, mostly just wanting to get its measure. Even so, it’s surprising how little damage she seems to do, even hitting it directly on the head; it stops in place, seemingly dazed, but she can’t quite tell if it’s hurt at all. ]

Tough…

[ She mutters to herself, then quickly glances in Eva’s direction to see how she’s faring. ]
onesurvived: (Considering)

I'm assuming they at least exchanged names before going in (I need more angy icons)

[personal profile] onesurvived 2025-06-03 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Just don’t get yourself killed, alright?

[Hmph… so this girl was naively confident, huh?

But then, Eva’s sharp eyes picked up on two things- the unusual self-assurance and strength with which Falin drew her weapon, and the recognisable family crest on the goats’ uniforms. But how?? Creatures like that didn’t belong in her world, right??

Eva stood her ground, but in that flickering moment of shock, the goat brought up his blade for a charge-

And it slammed right into a shield!]

Shit- Seriously, these things…!

[No time to thank her (but perhaps it would have hurt her ego too much to do so, anyway), as her original assailant tried coming in from the side!

She just about had time to aim a clean shot at the dazed goat Falin had struck, before whirling around with a high kick to the one on her side. But even with a direct strike to the side of it's head, the goat man only staggered in place- earning some choice colourful language from Eva.

Looks like they'd need to co-ordinate if they wanted to get anywhere with these things...]
chimaerically: (intense)

oh yeah for sure!

[personal profile] chimaerically 2025-06-10 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I won’t!

[ It’s nice of Eva to say it, though, or so she assumes; if there’s any sarcasm in that sentence, she does not hear it, partly thanks to her natural tendency to assume the best of people, and partly because, well, she’s got other things demanding her attention right now. The sudden gunshot is loud enough to force a surprised yelp from her, but she’s relieved to see it results in the goat man falling to its knees, not yet dead but clearly just barely clinging to life. She sends it off to the other side with a wide swing of her mace; as its body crumples to the ground, she’s already turning towards Eva, just in time to catch a glimpse of her impressive kick. The fact that the goat monster is still standing after that would be commendable if it wasn’t so troublesome. With a hit to the back of its knees, she sends it sprawling on the ground, and is just about to smash its face in when she sees it reaching out to grasp her leg. She manages to dodge, but it throws off her entire swing and her mace harmlessly hits the ground. ]

Gah! Dammit — Eva, can you finish it off?!
onesurvived: (End of the Line)

Someone who assumes the best in Eva... soft ;;

[personal profile] onesurvived 2025-06-17 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
[She couldn't blame Falin's reaction to the weapon-fire really. After all, even for one who came from a world used to such weapons, shooting a gun or being close to its firing line for the first time was truly unnerving, wasn't it?

There we go, one gone with Falin's mace- but the other was proving all the more troublesome.]

Got it.

[Yes, she saw that movement! Eva quickly whipped around and brought the shotgun right between the goat man's eyes. Steady her grip and-

Bang!

Even she couldn't help but flinch.

But the fight wasn't over yet.]

Shit-... there's one more of them!

[As if to avenge it's two fallen companions, the third goat summoned its red blade into its hand, making a charge for the pair of them.]
chimaerically: (yell5)

ofc! as far as falin's concerned eva (and most everyone else in the world) is a potential friend ^_^

[personal profile] chimaerically 2025-06-22 10:52 am (UTC)(link)
[ It’s a good thing the goat monsters’ bodies don’t seem to be made of any real material and disappear without a trace when they’re brought down, otherwise both she and Eva would already be covered in blood and viscera, and as far as she’s concerned that’s just unpleasant no matter how much combat experience one might have. Still, the goats put up just as much resistance as any real flesh-and-blood monster she’s ever fought, and something’s telling her that this one’s blade would hurt just as much as real steel if she let herself be cut by it, and so she once again summons a barrier to block its attack. It stops the blade, then immediately dissipates, and by then Falin is already on the goat man, this time aiming for the arm it uses to attack. Whether consciously or instinctively, she approaches it from the side, forcing it to turn to face her and expose its flank to Eva’s shots; she just hopes they come quickly, because being the full focus of the goat’s deadly attention is unnerving to say the least, even with the magic shield at her disposal. ]
onesurvived: (End of the Line)

Falin sweetie ;;

[personal profile] onesurvived 2025-06-29 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
[Yes, had she been hit with a blood-spray, Eva may not have been able to keep her mind set on the fight.

The smell of gunpowder, the ring of each shot, the practiced movement of the lever-action's reload- all of it screamed as loudly in her mind as the rainstorm around her mindscape, threatening to pull her focus from the fight to a different stormy scene somewhere far away.

The goat man spun around to face Falin.

Aim. Fire.

Bang! Bang!]

This thing...! Stay down, already!

[A quick reload, just in case, but with any luck those shots would do what they needed!

...But it still seemed surreal, somehow, that the creatures disappeared into golden butterflies once they fell. No trace, no bodies left behind at all. Convenient, yes, but still enough for discomfort to swell in her chest.]
chimaerically: (glance6)

[personal profile] chimaerically 2025-07-14 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
[ The goat struggles for a brief moment, reaching out with a mangled hand as if trying to physically hold on to life, then finally gives up and dissipates into a cloud of golden butterflies; they flutter away, seemingly unhindered by the heavy rain, and quickly disappear from view. Falin exhales slowly and straightens her back, then flips aside the wet curtain of her fringe that clings to her forehead and smiles at Eva in a way that somehow manages to be reassuring. ]

I think we got all of them so far…

[ There are a lot of questions she wants to ask — does Eva think there will be more? if so, does she expect them to move towards or away from the sound of fighting and gunfire? how much does she know about them? — but something about Eva’s expression is telling her that they wouldn’t be well received, at least not right now, and so she puts a pin in them for now. She’s very curious about these monsters, but if nothing else, she might as well wait until they’ve gotten somewhere dry before asking. ]

Are you hurt anywhere? They didn’t get you, did they?

[ She doesn’t feel any injuries on herself, but nonetheless looks herself over quickly just to make sure, and is pleased to find nothing more serious than some mud splashed around and a small tear at the hem of her pants. ]
