( With preparations and provisions arriving quietly at Otherworlders' homes all across Ellipsa, Ko finds himself feeling a little torn. Going on an expedition like this should be fine, right? He won't be alone, and it should only be reconnaissance.

Still, even that is new to him.

As such, he finds himself walking down the streets of Nightwake, as he often does, pausing abruptly to see a weapon shop. Darkly glittering blades on display inside. )

01. ) FOR HIJIKATA

//////////////////////////////// QUEST // CW: PTSD, DEATH OF FRIEND BY FIRE ////

( This is that place, isn't it? Ko hears it first: the angry shouts, pained cries of the gang members around him. Fire blazing high in the distance, Ko can feel the panic and pure shock well up in his middle.

Hijikata had been beside him before they were taken like this, but with the sounds of the fire and the chaos, Ko takes off running towards the burning buildings.

If Hijikata is observant, he might notice that it's a small village with more Western-style homes and buildings. )

Reiji? Reiji!

02. ) FOR RINKA

//////////////////////////////// QUEST ////

( What was it he'd been called before? Some sort of fairytale prince? The notion makes Ko want to laugh, but the truth he knows above all else is that his singing voice does carry a great deal of allure to it. Half of Japan reveres him as a God for this very voice, after all.

Seeing those birds chirping and angry makes it obvious that this is what he can do; sending fire at them is both cruel and not what he wants to do.

He registers Rinka next to him, and he addresses her quickly: )

Do you have any ideas?

[Hijikata curses himself. How did this quest go sideways so badly? First his Aegislash failed to stop the native ghosts from pulling them into a nondescript dream world (or, well, it was nondescript until just a moment ago) and making them try their hand at a giant puzzle, then they failed so badly that the spirits apparently decided that now it's punishment time!]

Tenjin-san!! Wait!

[Despite the western architecture, this is a terribly familiar sight to him (amplified if it's nighttime). By now, he's well over what happened when he was 11 years old, but that doesn't mean that he appreciates the similarity!

Regardless, right now he needs to focus on Ko. Whatever is happening here, it may just be the cause of his pyrophobia, and if Hijikata can, he'd like to keep him from suffering unnecessarily. He tries to turn the fire harmless with his magic, but as expected, it keeps it regular colours rather than turning green. It's an illusion alright. But sometimes, illusions hurt far worse than anything tangible, so he stays on Ko's heels. If he can catch him, he'll try to hold him back.]

( Thankfully for Hijikata, Ko is pretty easy to catch. Being held back by his friend gets him even more panicked, turning as much as he can in his hold to look him in the eye.

Notably, his irises are bright red. )

Please, I — I can't let him die again!

( He's looking over his shoulder towards a certain building, burning with the flames stark against the night sky. )

Reiji ... !! We have to save him! I can turn him Handead now!

[Well, damn. That eye colour change catches Hijikata by surprise. At Ko's words, he does let go of him, having made a quick decision: If this scenario they're in is anything like the Remorse Portals he encountered earlier on in his stay on Ellipsa, then maybe they can make a change to the events as they play out.]

Alright. Let's go!

[He doesn't know what a Handead is, but clearly there's more to Ko than he knew so far. Running towards the building he indicated, he's determined to do whatever he can to save Reiji, whoever he may be.]

( Ko would have thanked Hijikata had they the time to do so; he's running, taking off towards a burning building where he knows Reiji to be trapped. He's under rubble from his legs, smoke nearly obscuring his young face. )

Reiji! I — are you still alive? We'll get you out!

( There's a weak cough from the teenager, a dismissal: Ko, don't — I don't want both of us to lose our lives here!

Ko turns to Hijikata, desperation painted on his face. )

[Not to worry: He's on it! He may not be able to use his magic in this illusion of the past, but he still has his strength. Even though the heat of the flames is distinctly unpleasant without his usual magical abilities, he sets to work lifting the rubble off Renji. It's goddamn hard - he's only human after all -, but using his sword to cleave some chunks into smaller pieces helps.]

Tenjin-san, do your thing!!

[He said he wanted to turn him into a Handead - if that'll help him survive, now's the time.]

01. ) IT'S PERMANENT

//////////////////////////////// NIGHTWAKE ////

( Gara lives in a small townhouse with Yuki in Nightwake, and from there he's looking to do a little work. Something like what he's used to: his basement done up with all the supplies needed to do some tattoos and piercings.

One might expect it to be a little barren or even dingy, but Gara takes his job seriously. As such, it's incredibly clean. On the front door to their apartment, there's a sign that says:

( Gara and Yuki, stuck on the couch, the latter of the pair attached to him solidly. Smelling of peaches like usual, but with something a little warm and spicy underneath.

As overbearing as Yuki can be, he never clings quite like this ... )

01. ) SILENT MAJORITY

Aah ... I'm finished. It's over. I'll just lay down here and let the snow take me.

( Deki sounds very much like he's despairing over something serious and grave, but the truth of the matter is ... he's standing in front of a (pretty long) flight of stairs on the street. He looks around as though to see if there's any other route he can take ... maybe standing there for a little too long, sweating and panting already. )

[It does sound rather grave... but Baizhu does quite understand the problem as he pauses by the despairing young man and looks up the stairs.

Hmm.]

They do not make some of these routes with the health and fitness of everyone in mind. [He comments. It reminds him of the steps up to his own pharmacy back home, which often leave him quite winded if he's been out into Liyue for an errand.]

But I would encourage you not to give up quite so easily.

( Oh no. Oh hell. Oh, why does someone have to see him now?

Deki turns, shoulders hunched up, looking close to tears. )

I ... I really ... I don't think I can make it ...

( Poor dude. He looks up at the stranger, looking quite lost, maybe even hoping for some sort of solution? )

I thought it'd be fine to take a walk ... this is what I get for going outside.

[Oh, the poor fellow. Baizhu would balk at being faced with such a challenge on the days when he was feeling in poor health (well, poorer than usual), but this man looks visibly close to tears.]

There is an alternate route. It will take a little longer, but the incline is far more forgiving to a weaker constitution.

[And it is the route he tends to take, so, no judgement here.]

I happened to be going that way myself - would you care to join me?

( Playing fetch with Rabies has been grounding for Miku, and its been a joy. Tossing a frisbee around with the little shiba really calms her down like nothing else, but when he barks and dives into a bush to dig around, she has to sigh and go see what he's found.

When she does, however, the sight is enough to get her to recoil.

A ... human hand?

With sigils carved in?

She'll drop it: )

Oh, fucking gross!

( But those around her might notice its nothing gross ... rather, just a thick piece of dry wood.

Wonder what that's about. )

01. ) FOR FRIEDA

( Ok, what kind of stupid outer God-given curse is this. Surely this is just her being messed with by one of the entities trying to end her world, her whole universe as she knows it.

But that doesn't seem correct; why would those Gods make her crave affection so intensely? It seems like it'd be the doing of this place more than anything else.

It occurs to her: right, I agreed to that stupid makeup trial for the cash!

With her head in her hands, she groans, slumping against the outside of a little cafe. Her dog, Rabies, paws at her and whines in concern. )

[Spotting Miku in her dejected position, Frieda wonders if she's beating herself up over a marginal mistake or something worse happened. Her expression carries faint worry as she walks up to her.]

Is everything alright?

( Rabies trots up to Frieda, tapping his paws on the ground impatiently. Please help her, he seems to say. But Miku's head is snapping up to meet Frieda's gaze and — ah. )

U-uh ...

( She's covering her mouth with her hand, feeling that mouth go drier at the sight of her. Her gaze lingers a bit long on her, face coloring red. )

Not ... sure.

[Rabies gets an absent-minded petting from Frieda, but her focus is on Miku. Seeing how flushed she is, she puts a hand to her forehead.]

You're not sick, are you?

[As soon as her eyes meet Miku's, all the buttons of her blouse fly open.]

...

[She needs a moment to process what happened, but her torso - her decently filled bra included - sure enough is in full view!]

( Oh, fuck.

Miku, if it was possible, is even more red in the face, clamping her hands over her eyes as though that'd be enough. )

I'm! Fine!

( If she stays still, maybe Frieda won't see her.

But then she's moving anyway, keeping her gaze averted, moving to undo the tied up hoodie around her waist to shove it towards Frieda. )

C-cover up your ... chest, there's creeps around here!

( Probably. )

[How did this happen?! She never had a wardrobe malfunction this bad!]

Oh-- I'm sorry, I...

[She hastily buttons the garment back up, using Miku's hoodie for cover (she doesn't put it on - after all, what are the chances of that happening again?).]

Okay, there we go! Nobody saw, I think!

[Apparently, Miku having seen isn't a problem!]

Now, what happened to you? You're burning up!

( When Katakuri arrives, he's without his scarf, therefore exposing the teeth he kept hidden for the better part of at least forty years.

He feels bereft and atrociously bare, to say the least.

Putting his hand over his mouth, Katakuri is in Nightwake, looking for some sort of replacement for the scarf that was lost in his fight against Luffy ... but what'll work? )

[That's some Quirk...!

If Shoto stares, it's only because the height appears endless. The man's so tall; and he blinks quizzically when he tilts to peek back, a little stunned.]

Um- [woh.] Excuse me, [sir...?] are you lost, by any chance? I have some time-

[Headed home, which doesn't keep him from making his time for someone else.]

( Katakuri looks down towards Shoto, a gloved hand pressing over his mouth. It's a few moments until he answers; he supposes he's both lost and atrociously exposed. )

Somewhat, yes. I'm more focused on ... covering my mouth at present, than finding my way around.

[A covering...? Oh. An easy fix. He'll tug his wool-soft, candy-striped scarf before he's offering it up.]

I'm- [shy word...] I'll need it back, but it's fine. I don't feel cold like everyone else; because of my left, I mean.

[Two steps up.]

Were you injured or something like that? I know first aid-

( Doesn't feel cold? Strange. Is it the effect of a Devil Fruit? Katakuri takes the scarf in his big hands, wrapping it around his face to obscure his mouth. )

You're appreciated, but I haven't been injured.

( He narrows his eyes a little, scanning the boy in front of him intently. There's no bad will here, he thinks. )

You're ... very kind. Why would you help a stranger?

[It's a long story, sir...]

We— [He starts, but it's far from the first time someone's asked, and he drops his eyes.

Because I want to. Because sensei gave it to me. 'Cause I was given things, first. Because-]
