[ She goes to pick the card out and opens it to read it, half aloud and half to herself: ]

"Dear Miss Sakura"... mmhm--it's from the city? They give bouquets this big?

I'll take it to the city council.

[The matter, not the bouquet.]

This is overkill and a hassle. Also how does the city know it's your birthday?! Did they steal all our personal data? I knew something was fishy here!

[He actually didn't suspect any foul play until that boy (Mukuro, who didn't tell him his name) sowed doubt in his mind... besides, isn't he going to congratulate her?! She's probably all alone here, it's her birthday, and he's just bitching!]

Do you think that maybe there's a birthday spell...? I mean, I don't mind people knowing my birthday.

[ That much is harmless, at least to her. Even if this bouquet is a bit much. ]

Hm... that may be the case. This sort of stuff happens.

[It might have happened on Avalon, at least.]

What do you want to do with it? We can't fit it through the door. Not as it is, at least.

[He figures they could take it apart and reassemble it in her room, but does she even want it around?]

Well, it would do no good to keep it here as it is, right? Maybe we could at least try and make it a bit smaller...

[He draws his sword (because clearly that's the most appropriate way to tackle this), but hesitates for a moment.]

Do you have any friends with you here?

[Maybe, just maybe, he can still delegate the job to somebody else!]

I don't have any friends. Ah, but nee-san is here... although asking her to help might not be good...

[She has no friends and a bad/strained/difficult(?) relationship with her sister... okay, he simply can't turn his back on such a situation.]

[He sheathes the sword again and instead unties the bindings keeping the bouquet in shape.]

Let's carry the flowers inside in small batches.

[Maybe they can just spread them across a dozen or so vases?]

[He pauses... they should probably get a number of vases first, even just makeshift ones.]

Let me organise some glasses. I'll be right back.

[They can't both go because someone might take the bouquet, or pieces of it, and suddenly he's feeling pretty protective of it! They're lucky, though: After a relatively brief trip to the building management he returns with several actual vases. Given the circumstances he unscrupulously walks into Sakura's apartment and distributes them to his best aesthetic judgement, then helps her with the flowers. It takes a while, but eventually her room looks almost like a flower shop with all the small bouquets.]

Huh. This turned out pretty well, didn't it?

[Never mind that he totally decided over her head- what if she's have preferred the big bouquet? He could have reassembled it for her!]

[ Sakura sounds and looks rather impressed as he arranges all the flowers in her apartment. Sure, it may look like a flower shop in here, but Sakura certainly doesn't mind it as she claps with a bright smile. ]

That's amazing, Hijikata-san. It looks wonderful. I do hope that nobody who comes over to visit later on has flower allergies... Oh, well.

Are you expecting visitors?

[So she isn't totally alone! Good!! Then he won't have to feel bad for leaving her - because that's what he's going to do, after all he has no idea what he could offer a teenage girl in terms of birthday activities (okay, so he always hangs out with Mukuro, who isn't much older than Sakura, but she's a meathead like him)!]

I'm not sure... but I might see Rider and nee-san later, so I'm glad that the flowers aren't blocking the way. I can only imagine how they'd react.

[He knows Rider!! Two of them, even! (Actually three; he just doesn't know that Ozymandias is one too.)]

Medusa? Or the dapper guy in white?

The former-- oh, have you met her before?

Yeah. She really helped me out in a pinch not long after we arrived here.

[Without her he'd straight-up have been the first otherworlder to die.]

[He looks around the room once more, satisfied. It looks colourful and inviting with the many flowers, and Sakura looks happier too... Hijikata feels a lot better knowing that Rider is going check on her (and her sister might too, so maybe things aren't too bad between them?).]

Well, then, I won't take up any more of your time. Enjoy your birthday, Sakura-chan.

[He may have bad manners, but he can be polite!! Sometimes. A little. If she still needs something from him he'll stay, but otherwise he hopes that she'll enjoy the day and treat herself to something nice. A lonely girl in a strange new world should at least have a good birthday!]
