Given that it's their only way of surviving, I'd have to accept that it's a social difference between our species. It doesn't make them beasts.

It does, however, make merfolk more difficult to engage with as a human doesn't it? Then again, the spectrum of human benevolence and malevolence is enormous... maybe, between that great moral spectrum and the lack or morality in merfolk society, things even out in some way.]
