Sometimes, they had bits left behind. Sometimes they never recovered the bodies. Sometimes, there was nothing to recover.
That had been the case with Hange before they came here. For a while, the scar and their shoddy stitchwork had been the only memory Levi was able to touch. And while he hopes everyone who got their second chance here get to stay, he knows better than to expect it.
There's no telling if he'll be able to hold onto the pictures indefinitely either, but at least he has -- will have -- that. He hadn't been patient enough to wait for Armin's project and had already gone to get some pictures taken in a booth with Erwin and Hange, but he looks forward to having some of the kids, as well.
And, of course, now he's gotten some gifts, things he'd barely had the chance to hold onto before, but now he supposes he may be able to do that. Have a real home. Slowly fill it up with memories - pictures and trinkets and whoever can be bothered to visit him. That would be nice, he thinks. Maybe he can get used to peace after all.
"Yeah, you're right," Levi concedes, though his heart doesn't seem all the way in it. Eren has a point, of course. Just like he'd owed it to all of those who didn't get to see the new world to live, he supposes they would also want him to live comfortably, or at least not in pain. He's aware of it. He knows it. But actually accepting it is a whole other thing still, something he's not sure he can brace himself for so quickly.
"I'm not saying I won't try it. We'll get back out there in a few months."
Since there's not really enough of the healing water left for a large injury like that right now. How convenient.
