[And just like that, they get overwhelmed. They were right to dispatch the monsters at a distance, and they were right to not hold back on the force of their elemental attacks, because as soon as a ghoulpie gets to strike at them directly, the tides immediately turn.
Mukuro's attack doesn't even break its gallopping run. Her lunge doesn't throw it off balance, her expertly thrust knife doesn't break through its thick fur and hide, and her speed and agility don't prevent her from getting caught in its fur like in a glue trap. If its long, vine-like mane touches her skin, she may feel an additional paralysis kick in - and as if that weren't enough, the ghoulpie immediately u-turns and runs back into the water.]
Mukuro!!
[Despite reacting without delay, Hijikata can't stop the ghoulish horse. His sword strike cuts it as little as Mukuro's knife stab did, and his fire can't take hold before the monster splashes into the murky depths, taking Mukuro with it. No!! She's going to drown!
He rapidly leafs through his options while running after them, loosening his belt without thinking - if he needs to transform, he can't have his trousers strangle his shark tail or tentacles. My fire won't do. My swords won't do. I can't spin my time top here. There's only one weapon that may help: His lightning ribbon stick.
He dives after the ghoulpie, changing his legs to a shark tail and adjusting his breathing, scent and eyesight accordingly. He smells the monster more than he sees it, and as he approaches, swimming as hard as he can, he only vaguely sees Mukuro's body stuck to the large beast's chest. I'll strike it from behind. Hopefully that'll leave her unaffected.
He brandishes the unassuming weapon and discharges a massive lightning bolt at the ghoulpie. It strikes it in the rear, and it stops swimming, legs going still as it slowly tilts sideways. With a few strokes, Hijikata is at its side, drawing his shortsword Higanbana to cut Mukuro free, careful to hold on to her rather than to the sticky monster. The goddamn fur is thick as hell, but slicing it sideways with an enhanced blade is at least easier than trying to get through to the ghoulpie's skin!]
