[Hijikata agrees with that. These lava monsters aren't quiet, they stomp and bubble and hiss and whatever else, so they shouldn't need to stand on guard! Ayato in particular should rest up so his mana can regenerate. At some point they'll also need to touch, given that their round trip will come up to 5 days and neither of them wants to turn to stone... but he's not thinking about that right now!

(It's the sound of a lava monster attempting to generously circumvent the soggy, swampy area by approaching the Great Crossing through the sandy beach. The rocks and lava that make up its body grind and struggle against the countless sand grains as it painstakingly plows forward. Despite the intense heat the lava is not hot enough to melt the sand.)
