[Jean's love for Mikasa is easy to see and feel. Hijikata wonders if what he felt (and maybe still feels) for Medusa was love... but if it was, he certainly broke it carelessly, didn't he?
He tries to not dwell on that too much for the moment. Instead he thinks of other people he's sure he loved, and he paints two octopuses, one a silvery grey and one in green camouflage colours. On Prismatica he ended up getting involved with a whole bunch of people, but the two who stayed by his side until the end could both by symbolised with this animal - one because it was her battle motif, the other because of his moonblessing.
It was nice on Prismatica... he wasn't constantly fucking up, didn't hurt the people he cared about, and felt more stable and grounded. But he still has plenty of sources of happiness here on Ellipsa. There's Shoto, who admires him so much; there are Jean and Mukuro. There are many more people he cares about.
Outwardly, of course, he simply looks like he enjoys his little underwater scene.]
