I can recognized the pragmatism of it even if I personally hate it.

But to allow it to go on so long, that is the part I cannot give some sense of leeway for, even being pragmatic.

The only way it makes sense is because heroics. Because he is the villain and you are the hero and even if it means sacrificing your brother, you have to be the hero and he has to always be the villain.
