Heroes have to put their lives on the line all for the sake of a greater good no matter how scared they are, no matter how much they don't want to, because their morals won't let them be selfish. To the point they have to make inaction or failure a thing to damn themselves for.

Its easy for me to decide to help save the day because I have a stake in it and then I can go back to being selfish.
