In the depths of his awkwardness, Reiner actually manages a huff of laughter, more startled than anything. He expected some form of rebuke for that horrible joke, or for the tension in the room to climb impossibly higher. Instead, here Jean is, lessening it with a joke of his own.

Reiner doesn't know what he's done to deserve such consideration from Jean. (And he knows everything he's done to not deserve it.) Nonetheless, he's grateful.

He's even more grateful for Jean's hug when it comes, the arms that wrap around him solid and warm. Reiner leans into Jean's embrace, the pain in his chest easing, his shivers becoming slightly milder.

"I'm not used to being the cold one," he admits. It doesn't scratch the surface of how fundamentally wrong it feels to experience such cold, but at least it's a start.
