WHAT: A Rotomphone Rotom got bored. And now it's your problem.

WHERE: The Newbie Apartments
WARNINGS: Close encounter of the zappy kind, mild annoyances.

[All this talk about haunted houses and seeing lost loved ones was sure to draw in spooky and supernatural activity towards the new visitors!]

[So if your lights start flickering, or your tv is showing weird things, your coffee’s coming out cold—

Just blame the ghosties, right?]

[And definitely not a very bored Rotom that decided since it’s owner has a NEW PHONE to play with, it could go find some fun elsewhere!!]

[Not like it was lonely or anything!!

So, during that day, weird and wacky things with everyone’s electronics would happen—!]

[The next time Rin was going to get a snack from the fridge, when she closed it—

Huh. Weird, why did the door open again?

And… weren’t some things out of place? The soy sause definitely wasn’t upside down before—]

Because the music player in his apartment would suddenly decide to go off.

Blasting music that seemed to try and get your blood pumping—]

[Odd; the lights in whatever Room Mukuro would find herself in just could not stopping flickering. It seems mostly random too, and if she went to turn off the lights, it would just flick on again—]

[Or if she wanted to turn them on, they’d flick off... and whatever it was... wasn't staying to one room.]

Closed to Soldier 76: Did you want coffee with your ice?

[—Odd. Hadn’t the coffee maker been going for a long time? And yet it still didn’t seem to be producing coffee… Even if the smell of coffee was filling the room! Had it broken?]

Network Post: Open to All

[Sometime later that day, a video would appear on the Network, a man wearing what looked like a labcoat and full body suit adjusting the Camera, and once assured it was in the right position--]

Ah, hello. Pardon me.

[Clearing his throat carefully.]

My name is Professor Turo. I am a Pokemon Researcher from the Region of Paldea.

I wanted to apologize, as I believe due to an error on my part, some of you were harassed by a Pokemon of mine.

[He’d take out a purple and white coloured ball, clicking down on the small circle in the middle, and—]

Bzzzt!

[ A little orange and cyan coloured smiling creature appeared in a flash of light, and was staring at the screen, with a GRIN on it’s face—]

[While the Professor looked at it with clear exasperation.]

This is a Rotom— an Electric and Ghost type Pokemon, known for possessing electric appliances and causing mischief. However, they also can be tamed to either fight with Pokemon Trainers, or be used in our own electronics, like Pokedexes, phones and bicycles.

[--Don't mind the shirtless, well toned, scarred up man who's face is covered by the towel he's using to dry his hair walking behind the Professor by the way. Nothing important to see here.]

I sincerely apologize if Rotom caused you any undo distress today. It will not happen again if I can help it.

If you have any questions, I will do my best to answer them.

((Although I can’t reply to everyone to thread out the mischief Rotom got up to, please feel free to reply as if the little guys decided to bother your character!

Just remember, Rotom would not ever seriously hurt anyone beyond spooking them or giving them a minor electric shock to keep them away if it felt threatened! Also it can move through walls, whoops.))

[Julianna had been fed and likely eaten all of it by the time 76 came back to check of the coffee that

really should have brewed and dripped by then. Smelled like it and a hand rested on the counter as he leaned to the side to just peer at the side that should show if there was still water in the back of it-]

-Hell is going on with this thing.

[Basically new.]

[ The water was lower, so where was it all?

Rattle, rattle rattle... Like something on the top was loose. ]

[Fingers drummed lightly on the counter as eyes narrowed, squinting a bit at the water level. Right—

There was a faint huff as he leaned in enough to moved a hand over the top- before 76 paused for a moment before flicking the switch to turn the machine off. Then he resumed the action of moving to lift the lid of the maker so he could get a look at what was going on.]

[ It looked... D a r k in there.

Like... you couldn't see the coffee grinds, or the water, or anything.

Maybe it got pushed down deeper? ]

Huh-

[The light flickered. She was sat in the pen with her guinea pigs, minding her own business, and the first time she didn't pay much attention to it- then it happened again. And poor Frigg and Freya had already started getting jittery.]

...What's going on?

[ Flick! ]

[ Flick flick! ]

[ --Though upon noticing the little weird creatures making sad sounds, the lights... stopped?

They were off, all the same, and would stay off until Mukuro left the room itself. ]

[Well.

That wasn't right.

76 also wasn't about to be plunging a hand, let alone any of his fingers, into that strange darkness just to try and see. What he did do was take the coffee maker itself and tilted it just ever so slightly to try and use the kitchen light to his advantage.]

[ Daaaaark. So dark. But there was sloshing?

Water, coffee, maybe? Maybe just tilt it a liiiiittle more... ]

[He did sort of tilt the coffee maker side to side at the sloshing, but never more forwards-

Until he pulled it a bit closer to himself, trying to see if he could angle it just right for some light to get in three somehow.]

This thing can't be broken already.

[ DID SOMEONE ORDER ICE COFFEE

SURPRISE!!! ]

[Because the older man would be DRENCHED by a torrent of cold, cold, cold coffee, right in his face! ]

[The fuck—

76 didn't move a muscle once he was hit with the ice cold coffee outside of closing his eyes and a twitch. He could hear the liquid hitting the floor as well, dripping and soaking through his shirt.

He also didn't let go of the coffee maker.

After a heartbeat or two a hand moved, unplugging the coffee maker and hauling it up off the counter all at once.]

... laughing.

[So. Dry. It was laughing and there was something in it, wasn't there.]

[ That buzzy laughter continued,

And Jack would see that the coffee maker he was holding ... Had... eyes now?

And a big wide smile, grinning at him with mischievous glee. ]

[ And if he was to let go of the coffee maker, it would start floating~!

Oh he was a fun one, he was so surly and dry~! Or... Wet now! ]

The hell is this—

[He had let go at seeing the face, expecting it to land back on the counter.

Only it didn't. What the ever living fuck was this?]

[ The coffeemaker was circling him in the air, almost seeming like it was giggling at his reaction. ]

[ Which it totally was. Sloshing more coffee around too. ]

[ But, the front door was clicking opened-- ]

I have returned--

[ A familiar voice calling out from the hallway. ]

...Did you make coffee?

[This was an absolute mess—]

Laugh it up.

[He was going for the power cord now, see if he could at least get a 'leash' on it that way. Attention was caught when he heard the door, the voice that followed.]

I was attempting to, until something up and possessed the damned coffee maker.

[Still going for the cord, too.]

It's so cute!

[Rinku squeals onto the video and waves. She completely does not notice the man walking behind Turo, so enthralled is she by Rotom.]

Is that what was making the vending machines put out the wrong thing? That's okay, it was just having fun! I know someone back home who would love this little guy!

--Possessed?

[ Whatever could 76 mean? He had read that there were ghosts here in this world, which was not something he was unfamiliar of, considering the Ghost type--

--One moment, I will be right there. Please keep it's attention on you--

[ He needed to check something first. Not bothering to remove his labcoat, he dashed to his room, picking up his Rotomphone... ]

[ Which was. Not turning on. Shook it once-- nothing. ]

Ah.

[ Well, that solved that mystery. Opening up a drawer, he grabbed one of the empty Masterballs he had came here with. Most trainers would groan at the idea of 'wasting' a Masterball on such a Pokemon, but he did not really have a choice in the matter-- ]

[ Jack's first attempt at grabbing the cord would fail, with it dashing to his side. But a second attempt would have it caught, an indignant BZZZT sound obvious as it pulled on the cord, those eyes on the coffee maker clenching shut as it TRIED TO PULL AWAAAAY-- ]

If it was happening today, than likely it was the culprit, yes.

[ The Rotom would obviously giggle, a bzzzt sounding, happy pitched thing. Just to show off, it would flap it's little 'wings' at the girl. Glad SOMEONE appreciated it's pranks! ]

They are, indeed, cute. They are also quite intelligent and with the right machinery, capable of communicating with humans with speech.

It was a failure on my part-- I am not... used to having a Rotomphone consistently, [ or at least... not his own Rotomphone ] and with the new phone we were given upon arriving here, it slipped my mind to check in on it.

[ With made the Rotom make a B| expression at the Professor, dancing around his head. ]

Hopefully, since I will be carrying it with me more consistently now, it will get the attention it clearly needs.

This individual... are they a friend of yours?

Yeah! Noa-chan back home loves anything cute! Or anyone cute. I mean, sometimes she would follow people and bother them for a while, and it did used to creep people out, but I know she didn't mean anything by it. And things are better now on that anyway, and now everybody's friends. Oh, but that's okay! You said it lives in your phone? Is that fun for it?

[ He did not see at all. Were all teenagers so difficult to follow...? Following her statements had him frowning as his computations narrowed out what she said.

Translation: Apparently her friend had a habit of stalking others and creeping them out if she found them 'cute'. That's what he could determine. But they had worked out the problem, apparently... ? ]

Ah, yes. Rotom's initially were simply Pokemon that trainers could find and tame for battle, but some enterprising individuals realised that they could in fact ask tamed Rotoms to power our electronics.

[ The little Rotom made a bbbzzzt! Sound, closing it's eyes, looking all so smug and proud. ]

Which, considering much travel is done by foot in our world, means one would not need to worry about keeping your phone charged or finding batteries out in the wilderness. For their sake, they do seem entertained while traveling with us, as long as we pay them appropriate attention.

Oh, that sounds fun! You travel around just by walking? That sounds hard, but also kind of exciting! Like you're on an adventure, right?

[A miss in a grab didn't stop him at all, watching the movements it was making and just- well, he certainly could move far quicker than the average man, even if he had to deal with a partially wet kitchen floor as well—]

The successful grab came from when he had moved low, moving up and using the cord to get a hold of the machine itself.]

[.........?? That music jolts to life without him pressing the button for it startles Squall more than he likes. Plus it's an incredibly annoying song that reminds him of someone he'd really really rather not think about. Ever.]

[He's going up to the music player to shut it off!!]

Well, we do have a flying taxi service powered by Pokemon known as Squawkabillies, and some Regions have trains or subways- as well as planes that go larger distances between Regions.

[ He pulled out his phone-- which had Rotom making a （︶^︶）face and turning away from him, opening the proto-pokedex app and turning it so the young woman could see the Pokemon in question. ]

But we also put a large focus on individual travel as a large part of our worlds culture. 'Pokemon Journeys' are something younger individuals-- people around your age-- go on to explore the world and learn about Pokemon and their own goals in life.

[ There was a sincerely fond smile on the Professor's face, a hint of wistfulness- he... he had not gone on such a journey, himself. But he had the memories of his original's... and seeing the journey through Julianna's travels. Shaking his head a moment, he pulled up a different Pokemon for the girl to see. ]

In the Region I am from, there's also cyclizars, which are Pokemon people can ride on for transportation. They are especially useful when children go on the yearly 'Treasure Hunt' at the Uva Academy.

[ Well, juuuuuust as he got up to the music player--

The music would shut off, just like that!

How strange... was it just a glitch? ]

[Rinku's eyes sparkle and she nods excitedly.]

You really have stuff like that happen in actual life? That sounds so fun! I totally wanna try something like that! Wait, I guess we're already here for an adventure anyway. [ He's just so bored here. Nothing fun has happened, in his HUMBLE opinion, since the statues raged. It's quiet. Too quiet.

He's busy playing the simple side scroller that Chipp had provided what seems like ages ago when the little dinosaur on screen glitches out several times, causing him to lose. Iggy blinks, restarts, and it happens again. The dinosaur is running backwards.

Is he frustrated? No. Creeped out? Not at all. Nope. He's amused, and he bursts out into a fit of hysterical laughter that borders on near maddening. ]

You know Pokemon? I have a Pokemon from the last world I was in before this one. I don't know much about it, but it's a ghost kind too, someone told me.

[ He's a little clumsy aiming his camera, and his Pokemon is shy, but he manages to get Yamask in view before it slides away to hide behind a corner. ]

[...Okay, there was definitely something weird going on with the electrics here! The guinea pigs settled a little once the lights stopped, and after giving them a gentle little pet, she walked over to the light switch to turn it back on-

Had all the rest of her lights gone out too? She got out her phone, just incase she needed the torch function...]

Ah, hello there. Yes, I am a Pokemon Professor from Paldea, thus I have some knowledge on a variety of species.

[ He watched the Pokemon come into view, tilting his head slightly-- ]

Ah, yes. I do. That is a Yamask; as you said, it is a pure Ghost Type Pokemon.

[ He did try to grab his Rotomphone, only... to remember, it was powerless right now, the Rotom snickering at him. A sigh, before he opened up his new phone, activating the prototype version of the Pokedex he and Clavell were developing. Scrolling to the right entry, he held it up for the other man to see. ]

Originally found in the Region of Unova, they're notable for carrying a golden mask that are believed to resemble themselves when they were a living human. There are theories that Yamask still retain memories of their human lives, in fact, though how much of that is folklore and how much of it is something we can verify with research is up to debate.

[ So quiet. ]

[ Maybe... you just imagined it? ]

I heard that Pokémon can do...fighting or something. This one doesn't seem to want to fight, but if it has powers or something, I want to learn about them. I don’t want to mess up taking care of it.
