What had started with Mami stress-baking far too much cake and offering to give some away, had lead to a number of other offers to bring food, and soon she had ended up in charge of a substantial potluck mingle. Well, she supposed it would make for a nice welcome party for everyone else who had been dragged into this strange new world with her!

And so, a number of small tables and picnic blankets had been set out with cakes, cookies, hot dogs, burgers and other sweet and savoury treats that her and others had been brought along. Mami had even taken the time to decorate the table with little flowers that she'd gathered as well, just to add to the atmosphere that the cherry blossom trees already provided.

Hopefully it would be a relaxing, pleasant afternoon.

( ah, so they're starting with that kind of look, huh? what's he supposed to do about that?? besides offer a very charming grin in return as he leans on the table to draw himself closer. )

Already some experience under your belt, then?

( comparing to others does nothing but make one feel bad. just have to do what you're able and try to be satisfied. someone, somewhere, will always be better. and that's okay. because there's something that she may be best at over someone else. )

That's as good of a reason to learn as any! Before long, we'll have you on your way to perfecting at least one meal.

( kojiro fixes him with a look; sure, this guy looks innocent, but those are the kinds you have to watch out for. and just the little lilting way he's speaking...

yeah, kojiro knows his type real well. but, he's nothing if not accommodating and food is one of his favorite things that he likes sharing, so he doesn't really mind, to be honest. )

Sounds like a lie, but, that just means you're a clean slate.

[ Bridget, admittedly, hasn't brought anything to contribute. Mostly because she's not much of a cook and she's still getting used to this place--but meeting the people who can make sure she stays anchored here is important. So here she is. Nibbling on a cupcake and eying the others. Soundwave's avatar gets a wide-eyed look. ]

[ She murmurs, half to herself. ]

I enjoy poetry, amongst other forms of literature, but... [ The small part of her likes romantic things— fairy tales, stories about heroes, that sort of thing. But it is best to keep that part secret. ] I shall let you know, if there is anything that may be interesting to you.

There is so much to learn in this world.

[ It is indeed rather pretty. And grand, for those familiar with Japanese culture, although 'Suzaku' is at least as often a girls' name as it is a boys'. ]

Miss Ayaka. [ Repeating it softly. And not in Japanese. Maybe someday he'll get comfortable enough with his own native language to start saying things like Ayaka-san again. He's rather surprised to look up and find a mug of tea being proferred! ] Be... careful?

[ Taking the tea completely gormlessly, sorry. ]

[ This guy is weird.

... okay, Ayaka won't think that, but it doesn't seem like he's used to this sort of thing. Or maybe he's just not bothered by a lot of things— carrying a lot of items, heavy lifting, touching hot surfaces... ]

[ Put him down for another person who was on his way over to tell her what a great idea this was turning out to be — and then noticed... all of that.

Yuri doesn't immediately say anything, then: ]

If it doesn't, you'll find something that does. We can make our own potions here, after we've gotten the hang of it.

I've been cooking since I was a kid, yeah. Did a lot of kitchen assistant stuff until I was tall enough to reach everything by myself, and over the last [ smallest pause ] let's say year, I've done a lot of cooking for groups. Way too much of it over a campfire with no access to decent pots or consistent heat.

[ Oh, he'll definitely take a handshake. He'd take a high-five, too, if he could get it! ]

—I think what I was really asking was: do you actually wanna learn cooking, or are you feeling peer-pressured because you're outnumbered?

Ha. Not easily, anyway.

[ He says, because his game mechanics definitely let him cook strawberry shortcake from anywhere with no regard for a lack of equipment. Something something adjust your expectations, something something mug cakes??? ]

[ This is where a high-five would go, if he thought he could get away with it. He offers his hand for a shake instead. ]

The sorbet's mine, by the way. Some of the sandwiches and the rice balls, too, though I wasn't the only one with that idea.

Hey, not everyone can cook.

Lots of us, though, by the looks of the spread.

[ And then there's the raw meat and the frogs, but he likes Eichi and he's already feeling a little protective of Oryou tbh, so he doesn't single them out. ]

If it wouldn't be too much trouble? We've got a ton of chocolate at the house, but I'm actually more used to fruit-flavored stuff; strawberry, apple, kiwi...

Cooking-cooking, or like, assisting grown-ups in the kitchen?

[ He leans back, weight resting more on the table behind him. ]

I guess the transition's kinda fuzzy anyway. I started helping when I was like six, and I know I was unsupervised by the time I was fifteen. I was taller than her by then, so I could reach everything without help.

That's true, I don't! But perhaps I thrive off of disapproval.

Hot peppers! The property of the spice seems to raise one's body temperature and allow you to travel through mountainous areas without freezing so quickly. You have to continue to eat them, of course, but the discovery is monumental.

( Zelda laughs softly and shakes her head. )

I would, however, love to learn to cook things that solely taste good and don't serve a purpose. I feel it would be a useful skill to obtain.

( Zelda makes a special point to try the sorbet and like everything else she has tried, it is absolutely delicious, and her face brightens into a broad smile. )

Your cooking is unparalleled. I know we have a purpose in being here but I want to learn to cook things that aren't just camp food. I think it would be fun and I have had a surfeit of fun lately.

I was around ten. It's meditative when I don't have to worry about compensating for others' shortcomings.

[Too much, in fact. Far too much, but he'll leave it there for now, especially since she doesn't quite seem to have caught his meaning.]

Specifically, I have to wonder if myth and legend wouldn't be worth investigating in a world where the seasons themselves hold so much power. Perhaps a tale spread through word of mouth and immortalized in print might be rooted in truth.

[In other words, he is actively encouraging you to read fairy tales, Ms. Kamisato. Rejoice.]

[Mami may just be getting a far more genuine smile than most everyone else just sort of because. Of course, she has just as much potential to be a danger as the rest of them, but it would hardly do to let that wariness show, so.]

Do you have hobbies besides baking? I doubt many would say no to more events like this, that is, but we shouldn't spoil them too much.
