[Setting an alarm is a good idea. Who knows what they might get sidetracked by in there? Hijikata lets Kou run freely ahead, keeping a keen eye on their surroundings as he briskly follows. So far everything seems quit and peaceful; he can sense no signs of a threat. As far as forests go this one isn't too bad, he thinks. When he catches up with Kou the boy is already checking another maple tree for syrup.]

[He hears a branch crack in the middle distance, one of many background noises as they are normal for a forest. Still, he mentally notes the direction it came from and keeps an eye on that area. Nothing is moving... it was probably just a small animal, or a falling pinecone (are there pines in this forest, or is it all maples?).]
