[Hijikata curls up on himself at the bang - but when he looks at Eva again, she has transformed! He gives her a little nod, then slithers towards the door. The coast seems clear... but the staircase is suddenly a lot more intimidating. He hesitantly leans forwards and down, more and more, until his chin almost touches the next stair while his hind end is still sitting on the top step-- and then he loses his balance and tumbles down. Luckily his small body only makes a soft sound, not alerting any ghosts.
Ugh. Shit, I should've turned into something that can fly, too! But birds are eyecatchers, and I never practised any insects. He blinks a few times to clear his vision from the tumble, then continues his descent downstairs at an increasingly more self-assured and speedy pace. They manage to get down the (luckily adjacent) second staircase as well, making it back to the ground floor!
What now, though? The front door was mysteriously locked behind them, but maybe it's open again now..? However Hijikata neither puts much hope into that, nor does he intend to leave without his precious Muramasha. He slithers towards the kitchen, staying close to the wall! And then the ghost appears. It's the long-haired woman, moving through the room with narrowed, searching eyes. He makes it behind the leg of the dresser he had almost reached and presses himself behind it, body contorted for the utmost merge-with-the-furniture effect, his little heart hammering in his chest. Please don't see us!!]
